Microfabrication And Evaluation Of Planar Thin-Film Microfluidic Devices, Bridget Ann Peeni

Over the past 15 years, research in the field of microfluidics has rapidly gained popularity. By seeking to miniaturize and automate separation-based analysis, microfluidic research seeks to improve current methods through decreased cost, analysis time, and sources of contamination. My work has focused on developing a novel fabrication method, based on standard microfabrication techniques, to create thin-film microfluidic devices. This microfabrication format makes it possible to generate devices that provide high efficiencies, enable mass fabrication, and provide a platform capable of integrating the microfluidic and electronic components necessary for a micro-total analysis system (μ-TAS). When Dr Tony Barker designed and built the first modern TMS device in 1985 in Sheffield, England, he probably could not have predicted then how things would evolve with his ‘ fancy gadget’ (Barker et al., 1985). For the first time he had built a machine powerful enough to non-invasively induce currents within the brain and spinal cord. Because TMS can create focal transient lesions, as well as measure brain excitability and regional connectivity, neuroscientists all around the world are now busily using it to understand the brain. Evolution operates on whole genomes through direct rearrangements of genes, such as inversions, transpositions, and inverted transpositions, as well as through operations, such as duplications, losses, and transfers, that also affect the gene content of the genomes. Because these events are rare relative to nucleotide substitutions, gene order data offer the possibility of resolving ancient branches in the tree of life; the combination of gene order data with sequence data also has the potential to provide more robust phylogenetic reconstructions, since each can elucidate evolution at different time scales. Distance corrections greatly improve the accuracy of phylogeny reconstructions from DNA …

What Do Faculty Want?: A Focus Group Study Of Faculty At A Mid-Sized Public University, Michael A. Weber, Robert Flatley

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Presents the findings of a focus group study to determine how faculty use library resources and what role they see the library playing on campus. Results indicated that faculty use was mixed. Information literacy instruction, electronic access to information, and the library as space were seen as important roles.
