When A Killer Body Isn’T Enough: Cross-Gender Identification In Action-Adventure Video Games, Marc Ouellette
When A Killer Body Isn’T Enough: Cross-Gender Identification In Action-Adventure Video Games, Marc Ouellette
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
While sports games try to recreate the atmosphere of a stadium or of television broadcasts of games, role-playing and action-adventure games attempt to duplicate cinematography through animation. For Tomb Raider, the virtual reality created by the cinematic animation of the game produces an environment for male-to-female cross-gender identification, a topic that has received little critical attention. The sense of identification intended in this chapter comes from psychoanalysts Jean Laplanche and Jean-Baptiste Pontalis, who describe identification as a psychological process in which a subject assimilates an aspect, a property, a characteristic of another and transforms himself [or herself] totally or partially …
Beyond Patents: The Cultural Life Of Native Healing And The Limitations Of The Patent System As A Protective Mechanism For Indigenous Knowledge On The Medicinal Uses Of Plants, Ikechi Mgbeoji
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
The question that this paper seeks to tackle is whether in the contest of allegations of biopiracy and in the search for effective mechanisms for the protection of indigenous knowledge of the medicinal uses of plants possessed by traditional healers of southern Nigeria, there is any role for the patent regime. Given the popularity of alternative forms of health care, this question is of importance in contemporary discourse.

The Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) contains 5-8 million small wetlands and is one of the most ecologically valuable freshwater resources of the Nation. These wetlands provide abundant ecosystem services, including groundwater recharge, water for agriculture, water purification, and recreation. The PPR is best known as the “duck factory” of North America. By some estimates, this region produces over 50% of the ducks in North America.

The Rise, Development And Future Directions Of Critical Race Theory And Related Scholarship, Athena D. Mutua
The Rise, Development And Future Directions Of Critical Race Theory And Related Scholarship, Athena D. Mutua
Journal Articles
This essay tells the story of the rise, development and future directions of critical race theory and related scholarship. In telling the story, I suggest that critical race theory (CRT) rises, in part, as a challenge to the emergence of colorblind ideology in law, a major theme of the scholarship. I also contend that conflict, as a process of intellectual and institutional growth, marks the development of critical race theory and provides concrete and experiential examples of some of its key insights and themes. These conflicts are waged in various institutional settings over the structural and discursive meanings of race …
Density Estimation Using A Generalized Neuron, R. Kiran, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, M. Palaniswami
Density Estimation Using A Generalized Neuron, R. Kiran, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, M. Palaniswami
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Neural networks have been shown to be useful tools for density estimation. However, the training of neural network structures is time consuming and requires fast processors for practical applications. A new method with a generalized neuron (GN) for density estimation is presented in this paper. The GN is trained with the particle swarm optimization algorithm which is known to have fast convergence than the standard backpropagation algorithm. Results are presented to show that the GN can estimate the density functions for distribution functions with different means and variances. This density estimation method can also be applied to the multi-sensor data …
Development Of Electroanalytical Methods For The Determination Of Sialic Acid As A Biomarker For Cancer, Khawla Ali Rashid Al-Tayyari
Development Of Electroanalytical Methods For The Determination Of Sialic Acid As A Biomarker For Cancer, Khawla Ali Rashid Al-Tayyari
Theses
Sialic acid (SA) is a general term for a family composed of 43 derivatives of neuraminic acid. Whereas N-acetylneuraminic acid (NANA) is the most commonly occurring sialic acid in human. There has been a great interest in the determination of SA in humans because variations in SA level was linked to different medical conditions and diseases. In particular, serum SA are elevated in several types of cancers. SA also exists in Erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone, which induces the production of red blood cells and hence used in the treatment of anemia.
Although of the great physiological significance of SA …
Effects Of Medicinal Plants On Lead Induced Toxicity Of Biotransformation And Redox Cycling Enzymes, Yusra Saif Khalfan Al Dhaheri
Effects Of Medicinal Plants On Lead Induced Toxicity Of Biotransformation And Redox Cycling Enzymes, Yusra Saif Khalfan Al Dhaheri
Theses
All organisms including humans are constantly and unavoidably exposed to foreign chemicals (xenobiotics), which include both manufactured and natural molecules such as pollutants and plant metabolites. One such alarming pollutant is lead as it is constantly produced from automobiles exhaust products and food containers. It has been documented that lead, as the major heavy metal pollutant in the air, has notable effects on nervous systems and efficiency of several enzymes.
There are some natural products such as medicinal plants that might have antagonistic effects against such pollutants. Several medicinal plants are used as traditional remedies for many ailments without knowing …

A Study Of Factors Influencing The Occurrence Of Algae Bloom (Hab) Along The Abu Dhabi Coast, Uae., Buthaina Salem Saeed Al Qubaisi
Theses
During last few years, the frequency of Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) has increased worldwide. The occurrence of HAB in the Gulf region has only recently been recorded in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Specifically, these occurrences have not been thoroughly investigated. This phenomena, was found to be associated with the increase in nutrient load, depletion of oxygen and a significant decrease in fish populations that is caused by a bloom of a certain phytoplankton species, results in economic and social problems. Therefore, the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) has decided to conduct a study on different aspects of this phenomenon of …

Surface Modification Of Su-8 By Photografting Of Functional Polymers For Lab-On-A-Chip Applications, Zhan Gao, David Henthorn, Chang-Soo Kim
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Due to the high flexibility and versatility in the process development of microfluidic devices, an epoxybased, high-aspect ratio photoresist SU-8 is now attracting attention as the main structuring material of the fluidic channels. Manipulation of the surface properties of SU-8 channel wall is critical to attach functional films such as enzyme-immobilized layers or biocompatible layers. We describe a new in situ patterning method to form a hydrogel film on SU-8 by a photografted polymerization procedure. The hydrophobic surface of SU-8 is modified using a surface bound initiator HCPK (1-hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone). A p-HEMA (poly-2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) hydrogel film is grafted by photopolymerization …

Application Of Cognitive Engineering Principles To The Redesign Of A Dichotomous Identification Key For Parasitology, Kimberly A. Smith-Akins, Sharon Mclane, Thomas M. Craig, Todd R. Johnson
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Dichotomous identification keys are used throughout biology for identification of plants, insects, and parasites. However, correct use of identification keys can be difficult as they are not usually intended for novice users who may not be familiar with the terminology used or with the morphology of the organism being identified. Therefore, we applied cognitive engineering principles to redesign a parasitology identification key for the Internet. We addressed issues of visual clutter and spatial distance by displaying a single question couplet at a time and by switching to the appropriate next couplet after the user made a choice. Our analysis of …
On Sovereignty And Overhumanity Why It Matters How We Read Nietzsche's Genealogy 11:2, Christa Davis Acampora
On Sovereignty And Overhumanity Why It Matters How We Read Nietzsche's Genealogy 11:2, Christa Davis Acampora
Publications and Research
There is nearly unanimous agreement, among those who bother to pay attention to Nietzsche's anomalous claim about the "sovereign individual" in the second essay of On the Genealogy of Morals that the "sovereign" is Nietzsche's ideal, and many more still take sovereignty as the signature feature of the overman Nietzsche heralds in his Thus Spoke Zarathustra and other writings. I describe the reception among Nietzsche scholars as "nearly unanimous" because there has been at least one cry of dissent: that issued by Lawrence Harab. Curiously, his brief but incisive comments about the problematic nature of several readings along these lines …
Constructing Whiteness In Health Disparities Research, Jessie Daniels, Amy J. Schulz
Constructing Whiteness In Health Disparities Research, Jessie Daniels, Amy J. Schulz
Publications and Research
There is a long tradition within the United States of constructing whiteness (the racial subject) against racialized others (the racial object) and in the process displacing the focus of critical analysis. Here we turn our lens to the often invisible--or at least underinterrogated--concept of whiteness within the context of the literature on racial disparities in health. Specifically, we examine how whiteness is constructed in the active literature documenting and interpreting racial disparities in health and the implications of these constructions for efforts to eradicate inequalities in health. We draw on the concepts of racial formation and "racial projects" that emphasize …

Analysis And Detection Of Metamorphic Computer Viruses, Wing Wong
Analysis And Detection Of Metamorphic Computer Viruses, Wing Wong
Master's Projects
Virus writers and anti-virus researches generally agree that metamorphism is the way to generate undetectable viruses. Several virus writers have released virus creation kits and claimed that they possess the ability to automatically produce morphed virus variants that look substantially different from one another. To see how effective these code morphing engines are, and how much difference exists between variants of a same virus, we measured the similarity between virus variants generated by four virus generators downloaded from the Internet. Our result shows that the effectiveness of these generators varies widely. While the best generator, NGVCK, is able to create …
Computational Fluid Dynamics And Experimental Studies Of An Energy-Efficient Uv Disinfection System For Water Treatment, Nancy Goenawan
Computational Fluid Dynamics And Experimental Studies Of An Energy-Efficient Uv Disinfection System For Water Treatment, Nancy Goenawan
Theses
In typical commercial UV treatment system, water is flushed through a reactor vessel, where a UV lamp irradiates the flowing water. The distribution of the UV dose is extremely non-uniform. At distances away from the light, the dosage will be too low to kill the microorganism. As a result more power is needed in such a system for an effective treatment. A new energy-efficient UV disinfection system, named "Off Center", was designed, developed, and tested. This "Off Center" system consists of a UV bulb that has been relocated from its traditional central location to a location closer to the 4-in …
Study Of Rna Secondary Structure Prediction Algorithms, Lisa Yu
Study Of Rna Secondary Structure Prediction Algorithms, Lisa Yu
Master's Projects
Dynamic programming algorithms such as Nussinov algorithm and Zuker algorithm define criteria to search the most stable RNA secondary structures. Stochastic Context-Free Grammar (SCFG) predicts the most possible RNA secondary structure using context-free grammar and a defined set of probabilities for each grammar rule. These algorithms form the base of using computer programs to predict RNA secondary structures without pseudoknots. In this report, we review these RNA secondary structure prediction algorithms and present our own software implementations of these algorithms. The Nussinov algorithm is easy to understand. But our results show that the Nussinov algorithm is overly simplified and can …

Visualization Of Secondary Rna Structure Prediction Algorithms, Brandon Hunter
Master's Projects
This chapter introduces the secondary structure prediction problem. It describes what the secondary structure prediction problem is and why it is important. Based on the importance of the algorithm it is essential to have a clear means to visually represent the problem. Therefore, this chapter details the high level goals of the visualization. It details how the visualization will visually represent the problem through several simultaneous representations. These visual representations will be tied together in order to increase the understanding of the algorithm.
