Rethinking Prison Sex: Self -Expression And Safety, Brenda V. Smith

Project on Addressing Prison Rape - Articles

This article analyzes legislation and policies that limit prisoners' sexual expression and autonomy. The article juxtaposes prisoners interest in sexual expression against the interests of the state in regulating sex by and between prisoners. The article concludes that the state has an interest in regulating sex between inmates and staff and in regulating coerced or forced sex between inmates. In other instances prisons could accommodate prisoners' interest in sexual expression and achieve important goals such as better decisionmaking; improved relations with family and partners to aid community reentry; reduction of prison rape; and inmate management.

INTRODUCTION The recent concurrence of Justice Ginsburg in Grutter v. Bollinger, and her dissent in Gratz v. Bollinger, cogently explore what W.E. DuBois termed problems of the "color line". The ongoing consequences of racism in America reveal a complicated racial caste stem, the medico-legal consequences of which merit exploration. Following in the footsteps of other great jurists, Justice Ginsburg situates the challenges facing persons of color in the context of American history and connects the racialized dots to recognize the ongoing effects of racism. Together with the majority opinion in Grutter, Justice Ginsburg acknowledges that race still matters in America. …

Apples destined for export to Japan and South Korea are currently disinfested for codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), using methyl bromide fumigation. Restrictions and limitations imposed on the uses of methyl bromide have increased interest in developing alternative non-chemical quarantine treatments. It is imperative that the treatment is effective against codling moth yet maintains the quality of treated apples. The present study explored the application of radio frequency (RF) energy in conjunction with conventional hot water treatment to develop feasible heat treatments. This symposium contribution examines the disintermediating and reintermediating roles played by Creative Commons licenses on the Internet. Creative Commons licenses act as a disintermediating force because they enable end-to-end transactions in copyrighted works. The licenses have reintermediating force by enabling new services and new online communities to form around content licensed under a Creative Commons license. Intermediaries focused on the copyright dimension have begun to appear online as search engines, archives, libraries, publishers, community organizers, and educators. All nascent polypeptides synthesized in bacteria, mitochondria, or chloroplastsstart with a N-formylmethionine. Peptide deformylase (PDF) is a mononuclear metal ionprotein that is responsible for removing the N-formyl group of nascent proteins found inbacteria and chloroplasts in order for them to become mature proteins. It is possible, asseen from the literature with actinonin, to chelate the enzyme's metal ion and inhibit thefunction of protein production essentially resulting in death of the bacteria, or plant. Thisstudy examines the active site of Arabidopsis thaliana (At) types of PDF (AtDEF1 andAtDEF2, respectively) as well as bacterial DEF2 using sequence alignments andcomputational modeling. Although sleep is an important part of every person's life, depression only affects a small portion of the population. Each subject is a source of fascination to both scientists and laypersons alike. Effort to understand these subjects, both separately and together, can add to the expanding knowledge base, leading to further research, which can, in turn, help people who suffer from these issues. The motivation of this thesis is to review current literature on both sleep and depression separately, followed by a review of literature covering both topics, and then a small study about sleeping habits and depression.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is the most often diagnosed psychiatric illness worldwide, with prevalence rates indicating that as many as 25% of the population during their lifetimes will experience symptoms of MDD (Holmes, 1997). Therapies that focus on restructuring the client's cognitions have been shown to be effective in the treatment of this disorder. For some clients, however, reoccurring depressive episodes are common and symptom reduction is infrequent. The research of Worthington (1988) suggests that the highly religious client may actually see the world in a uniquely differently way than does the non-religious. These products are claimed to possess antioxidant, antiviral, and antimitotic properties. Increasing interest is related to their function in the CNS as modulators of neurotransmitters associated to neuronal damaging and depression. All these features make PPAPs targets for synthesis. Mimicking the structure and even the function of an ??-peptide with artificial chainmolecules such as ??-peptides, ??-peptides and other unnatural oligomers has shown early success.The structural similarities between natural peptides and oligoureas lead to the belief that C2-symmetric oligoureas could be a good candidate for peptidomimicry. Molecular modelingindicates that both homochiral (all monomers have the same absolute configuration) andalternate chiral (absolute configuration of the residues alternate) C2-symmetric oligoureas canform helix- and sheet-like structures in solution conditionally.Several C2-symmetric 1,2-diamines were chosen as the building blocks for the synthesisof chiral oligoureas, and all diamines except for one were prepared in lab. The effects ofstress on pain perception have been well studied, but only limited research has been conducted on the opposite relationship, the effect ofpain on stress level. Problem. The purpose of this study was to discover factors that influence the political career choice of African American women legislators to serve in the State of Michigan Congress. Therefore, this study focused on motivations that affected three African American women legislators' political experiences.

Method. This study used a case-study approach, and the end result is a multi-faceted case study of the political experiences of three State of Michigan African American women legislators. The study examines two major contrasting theological accounts of nature within the contemporary North American Evangelical community as articulated by Henry Morris and Bernard Ramm. Successful forest management requires an understanding of the habitat requirements of individual species at multiple spatial scales. The cerulean warbler (Dendroica cerulea) is a neotropical migratory songbird that has recently gained widespread attention as a species of conservation and management concern. It breeds in mature, deciduous forests of eastern North America and has experienced precipitous range-wide declines over the last 40 years. Although Kentucky likely supports one of the largest breeding populations of the species, no information exists on cerulean warbler habitat selection within the state. Macrophage death is likely to contribute to the transformation of fatty streaks into advanced atherosclerotic lesions. Previous work in the laboratory showed that OxLDL promotes cell death in human macrophages by a mechanism involving intracellular peroxide formation. Here we show that glutathione depletion induced by OxLDL occurs independent of peroxyl radical formation. Our data suggest that the depletion of glutathione is the fundamental defect that renders macrophages susceptible to OxLDL-induced cell injury, but alone is not sufficient to kill macrophages. We indicate that increased protein-Sglutathionylation is involved in OxLDL-induced macrophage death. A potentiation of OxLDL toxicity was observed in macrophages …
