Allometry And Sexual Dimorphism In The Snail-Eating Turtle Malayemys Macrocephala From The Chao Phraya River Basin Of Central Thailand, Timothy R. Brophy

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Allometric growth and sexual dimorphism of the shell is evident in Malayemys macrocephala from the Chao Phraya River Basin of central Thailand. Differences in allometric growth between males and females produce sexually dimorphic adults. Adult females exhibit larger sizes and have relatively wider and higher shells and longer plastra than males.

Peri-Nuclear Clustering Of Mitochondria Is Triggered During Aluminum Maltolate Induced Apoptosis, David A. Dewitt, Jennifer A. Hurd, Nena Fox, Brigitte E. Townsend, Kathleen J. S. Griffioen, Othman Ghribi, John Savory Jan 2006

Peri-Nuclear Clustering Of Mitochondria Is Triggered During Aluminum Maltolate Induced Apoptosis, David A. Dewitt, Jennifer A. Hurd, Nena Fox, Brigitte E. Townsend, Kathleen J. S. Griffioen, Othman Ghribi, John Savory

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Synapse loss and neuronal death are key features of Alzheimer’s disease pathology. Disrupted axonal transport of mitochondria is a potential mechanism that could contribute to both. As the major producer of ATP in the cell, transport of mitochondria to the synapse is required for synapse maintenance. However, mitochondria also play an important role in the regulation of apoptosis. Investigation of aluminum (Al) maltolate induced apoptosis in human NT2 cells led us to explore the relationship between apoptosis related changes and the disruption of mitochondrial transport. Similar to that observed with tau over expression, NT2 cells exhibit peri-nuclear clustering of mitochondria …

The Impact Of Immunization On The Association Between Poverty And Child Survival: Evidence From Kassena-Nankana District Of Northern Ghana, Ayaga A. Bawah, James F. Phillips, Martin Adjuik, Maya Vaughan-Smith, Bruce Macleod, Fred N. Binka Jan 2006

Binka

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Research conducted in Africa has demonstrated consistently that parental poverty and low educational attainment adversely affect child survival. Relative poverty has a pronounced effect on the survival of children, even in a setting where nearly all families are poor. Results from the research presented in the working paper lend strong support to the United Nations’ goal of reducing excess childhood mortality among the poor by directing a particular focus on immunization. Findings in this working paper show that the adverse effects of poverty disappear and that the effects of educational attainment are reduced in survival models that control for immunization …

Urban Versus Rural Mortality Among Older Adults In China, Zachary Zimmer, Toshiko Kaneda, Laura Spess Jan 2006

Urban Versus Rural Mortality Among Older Adults In China, Zachary Zimmer, Toshiko Kaneda, Laura Spess

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

For some time, Chinese government policies have treated rural and urban areas very differently, and a by-product of China’s rapid development seems to be an even greater differentiation between urban and rural social and economic life. Over the next several decades, in part because of rapid fertility declines and in part as a result of mortality declines at older ages, China and other developing countries will experience enormous increases in the proportion of older adults and the proportion of the “oldest-old.” It is reasonable to expect that these age structure changes will alter the provision of health care, making an …

Relationship Between Parental Physical Discipline And Child Externalizing Problems In The Caribbean Subculture In New York City, Meltem Paker Jan 2006

Relationship Between Parental Physical Discipline And Child Externalizing Problems In The Caribbean Subculture In New York City, Meltem Paker

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This study investigated the relationship between parental physical discipline (PD) and child externalizing behaviors (EB) in the Caribbean subculture and examined whether acculturation to the European American and Caribbean cultures, generational status, normativity of PD, and warmth in the parent-child relationship moderated this relationship. Eighty-nine parents of Caribbean origin answered an anonymous survey consisting of various scales and demographic questions.

Descriptive analyses indicated that parents in this study used PD an average of 10 times during the past year. The majority (69%) reported using at least one PD act in the past year. All forms of more severe PD (e.g., …

Demographic Issues In Infant Health In The 1990’S And Measurement Issues In Costing Medicaid Expansions, Danielle H. Ferry Jan 2006

Demographic Issues In Infant Health In The 1990’S And Measurement Issues In Costing Medicaid Expansions, Danielle H. Ferry

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

National measures of infant health in the 1990s were flat, but rates of low birth weight and preterm birth among blacks, especially in center cities, improved. Health gains were especially marked in Washington, DC. Analysis at the metropolitan area level reveals that center city-suburban gaps in black infant health declined. The first two chapters of this dissertation use the 1990-2001 National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) Natality Files to examine improvements in infant health among African-Americans, first, in Washington, DC, and second, in 37 metropolitan areas with large black populations.

Although Washington, DC also experienced substantial, above-average reductions in its …

The Emergence Of Exacted Conservation Easements, Jessica Owley Jan 2006

The Emergence Of Exacted Conservation Easements, Jessica Owley

Nebraska Law Review

This Article outlines reasons why exacted conservation easements emerged and why they are such a popular tool. This Article begins by looking at conservation easements generally and how they arose in the context of environmental law and property law. This emergence is most easily and correctly understood by examining the development of American environmental law and its subsequent rejection by many facets of society. What remains is a push-pull relationship: we still have environmental goals and values, but we dislike government regulation. Conservation easements become a way to protect the landscape without public intervention. With conservation easements, it may appear …

Behavioral Genetics Research And Criminal Dna Databanks, David H. Kaye Jan 2006

Behavioral Genetics Research And Criminal Dna Databanks, David H. Kaye

Faculty Scholarship

This article examines the current concerns about whether DNA databases may be used for actions other than to apprehend criminals, such as genetic research, in particular, searching for a "crime gene". Part II considers the perspective that these databases may be useful for research. The information within a DNA sample consists of a limited number of DNA base-pair variations, which are important to identification, but not necessarily to genetic research. However, while it may be difficult to conduct genetic research, it is not impossible. Part III examines state and federal database legislation. There are examples of three states' statutes and …

Never Let Me Clone? Countering An Ethical Argument Against The Reproductive Cloning Of Humans, Yvette Pearson Jan 2006

Never Let Me Clone? Countering An Ethical Argument Against The Reproductive Cloning Of Humans, Yvette Pearson

Philosophy Faculty Publications

In the March 2006 issue of EMBO reports, Christof Tannert, a bioethicist at the Max Delbrück Research Centre in Berlin, Germany, presented a moral argument against human reproductive cloning on the basis of Immanuel Kant’s categorical imperative (Tannert, 2006). In this article, I address some problems with Tannert’s views and show that our concerns about this prospective procedure should prompt us to scrutinize carefully the conventional procreative practices and attitudes. Indeed, if we set aside objections that are grounded in genetic determinism, many of the offensive features of human cloning are identical to problems with procreation by more conventional means, …

Gene Expression Data For Dlbcl Cancer Survival Prediction With A Combination Of Machine Learning Technologies, Rui Xu, Xindi Cai, Donald C. Wunsch Jan 2006

Gene Expression Data For Dlbcl Cancer Survival Prediction With A Combination Of Machine Learning Technologies, Rui Xu, Xindi Cai, Donald C. Wunsch

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Gene expression profiles have become an important and promising way for cancer prognosis and treatment. In addition to their application in cancer class prediction and discovery, gene expression data can be used for the prediction of patient survival. Here, we use particle swarm optimization (PSO) to address one of the major challenges in gene expression data analysis, the curse of dimensionality, in order to discriminate high risk patients from low risk patients. A discrete binary version of PSO is used for gene selection and dimensionality reduction, and a probabilistic neural network (PNN) is implemented as the classifier. The experimental results …

The present work examined the in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the essential oil and methanol extract from Achillea biebersteinii Afan. (Asteraceae). The essential oil exhibited antimicrobial activity against 8 bacteria, 14 fungi and the yeast C. albicans, whereas methanolic extract remained inactive. The antioxidative capacity of the samples was evaluated by using DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and b-carotene/linoleic acid assays. In both assays, the extract showed better antioxidative capacity than the oil. The extract reduced the stable free radical DPPH with lower IC50 value (89.90 µg/ml) than the oil (8900 µg/ml). In the b-carotene/linoleic acid assay, the samples were not …

Colchicine-Induced Tetraploidy And Changes In Allele Frequencies In Colchicine-Treated Populations Of Diploids Assessed With Rapd Markers In Gossypium Arboreum L., Saeed Rauf, Iftikhar Ahmad Khan, Faroog Ahmad Khan

Turkish Journal of Biology

Two cultivars of cotton G. arboreum L. cv. FDH-228 and HK-113 were treated with colchicine solution (1%) with 3 methods of application. Colchicine application at the seedling stage on shoot apex was successful. Tetraploid plants of arboreum (4x = 2n = 52) had larger vegetative, reproductive parts, but less frequent stomata and higher optical density of DNA than their normal diploid counterparts (2n = 26). Results also showed that individuals that escaped the duplicating effects of colchicine although treated, presented significant point mutagenic effects. Randomly Amplified Polymorphic DNA markers were used to evaluate diversity and similarities in populations treated with …

Nucleic Acid Extraction From Clinical Specimens For Pcr Applications, Ashabil Aygan Jan 2006

Nucleic Acid Extraction From Clinical Specimens For Pcr Applications, Ashabil Aygan

Turkish Journal of Biology

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been widely used due to its high specificity, sensitivity, and rapid turn-around time. However, the major limitation of PCR based diagnosis is inhibition of the reaction caused by a variety of components within clinical specimens. The demand for PCR diagnosis in medical microbiology has highlighted the need for efficient methods of nucleic acid extraction. Although there has been progress in the simplification and purification of microbial nucleic acids, many researchers' procedures are still inconvenient for routine use with any specimen and a universal method has not been devised yet. In this review, some of the …

Thirty nodule isolates from bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) grown in Eskişehir were studied for their physiological and biochemical characteristics. Most isolates produced abundant extracellular polysaccharides, tolerated high salt concentration (5% NaCl), grew at a temperature of 42 °C, and synthesized melanin. They were able to grow at pHs ranging from 3.5 to 9.0. The majority of the isolates showed an intrinsic resistance to the antibiotics chloramphenicol (20 and 50 µg ml^{-1}), erythromycin (30 µg ml^{-1}), kanamycin (10 µg ml^{-1}), and streptomycin (40, 80, and 100 µg ml^{-1}). Plasmid DNA profiles of the isolates were identified and it was determined that …

Evidence For The Presence Of A Second Electron Donor For The Cytoplasmic Thioredoxins In The Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Ahmet Koç, Hüseyi̇n Ç. Karakaya, Ercan S. Ünlü Jan 2006

Evidence For The Presence Of A Second Electron Donor For The Cytoplasmic Thioredoxins In The Yeast Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Ahmet Koç, Hüseyi̇n Ç. Karakaya, Ercan S. Ünlü

Turkish Journal of Biology

In yeast, the cytoplasmic thioredoxin system is composed of NADPH, thioredoxin reductase-1 (TRR1) and 2 thioredoxin genes (TRX1, TRX2). In this study, using yeast knockout mutants for TRR1, TRX1 and TRX2 genes, the role of the thioredoxin system in methionine sulfoxide reduction was investigated. Cells lacking both TRX1 and TRX2 genes simultaneously were not able to reduce methionine sulfoxides to methionine; however, mutants missing the TRR1 gene were able to reduce methionine sulfoxides to methionine, which showed that electrons could be transferred from NADPH to thioredoxins in the absence of TRR1. Similar results were observed for 3-phosphoadenosine 5-phosphosulfate reduction in …
