The History Of Seafood In Irish Cuisine And Culture, Mairtin Mac Con Iomaire Jan 2006

The History Of Seafood In Irish Cuisine And Culture, Mairtin Mac Con Iomaire

Conference papers

Fish is one of the most abundant wild foods available to a small island nation. Certain species of seafood have moved from being ‘poor man’s food’ to ‘luxury food’ over time. It may be said that the Irish do not behave as island people since we have little or no history of exploiting the sea compared to our European partners. Ireland was late developing its fishing industry and now suffers reduced EU fish quotas, the unfortunate but necessary result of decades of over-fishing on European waters. This paper investigates the historical role seafood has played in Irish cuisine and culture …

Rapid Determination Of Reduced And Oxidized Glutathione Levels Using A New Thiol-Masking Reagent And The Enzymatic Recycling Method: Application To The Rat Liver And Bile Samples, Imam H. Shaik, Reza Mehvar Jan 2006

Rapid Determination Of Reduced And Oxidized Glutathione Levels Using A New Thiol-Masking Reagent And The Enzymatic Recycling Method: Application To The Rat Liver And Bile Samples, Imam H. Shaik, Reza Mehvar

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

A microtiter plate assay for quantitation of reduced (GSH) and oxidized (GSSG) glutathione in the rat liver tissue and bile is described. The assay is based on the established enzymatic recycling method and a new thiol-masking reagent, 1-methyl-4-vinyl-pyridinium trifluoromethane sulfonate (M4VP). Samples were first processed by homogenization with (liver) or addition of (bile) sulfosalicylic acid. The total glutathione and GSSG were then determined before and after rapid (>= 2 min) and efficient (100%) masking of the GSH content of the samples with M4VP followed by the enzymatic recycling assay. The percentages of error and coefficient of variation of the …

A Chilling Of Discourse, David R. Barnhizer Jan 2006

A Chilling Of Discourse, David R. Barnhizer

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

I argue that the key consequence of the collectives of multicultural, postmodernists, radical feminists, critical race activists, sexuality advocates and others working for radical change is not only the politicization of knowledge in what is after all a realm of politics we call law, but the incoherence of knowledge and the loss of the quality and integrity of our pursuit of knowledge through scholarship. One result is that much of the scholarship and teaching found in the humane and political or noncumulative disciplines such as law are forms of self-interested propaganda in which honesty is muted or excluded and truth-seeking …

Musical Pattern Design Using Contour Icons, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle Jan 2006

Musical Pattern Design Using Contour Icons, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

This paper considers the use of Contour Icons in the design and implementation of musical patterns, for the purposes of detection and recognition. Research work had endeavoured to deliver musical patterns that were both distinct and memorable, and to this end a set of basic melodic shapes were introduced using a Sonification application called TrioSon that had been designed for the purpose. Existing work in the field (such as that concerning Earcon design) has considered the mechanisms by which patterns may be made distinctive, but it is argued that separate consideration must be given to the method of making such …

A Numerical Acoustic Fluid-Structure Model Of A Therapeutic Ultrasound Angioplasty Device, Graham Gavin, M.S. J. Hashmi, Finbar Dolan, Garrett Mcguinness Jan 2006

A Numerical Acoustic Fluid-Structure Model Of A Therapeutic Ultrasound Angioplasty Device, Graham Gavin, M.S. J. Hashmi, Finbar Dolan, Garrett Mcguinness

Conference Papers

Ultrasonic angioplasty involves the use of ultrasonic vibrations delivered to the distal-tip of small diameter wire waveguides and is an emerging technology the may have potential use in the treatment of complicated atherosclerotic plaques during cardiovascular surgery. Complicated plaques, including chronic total occlusions and calcified lesions, seriously reduce success rates during standard intervention involving guidewire access, followed by balloon dilation or stent delivery. The large amplitude (0-150 μm) wire waveguide distal-tip displacements in the low-frequency ultrasonic (18-45 kHz) range have been shown to disrupt plaque material by direct contact ablation and cavitation, acoustic streaming and pressure wave components in adjacent …

Smart Growth: A Buffer Zone Between Decentrist And Centrist Theory?, Dorothy Stewart, Lorcan Sirr, Ruth Kelly

Articles

The context for planning at the turn of the 19th century, in a newly industrialized world, was based on the need to find solutions to overcrowding and dire urban conditions. Planning decisions made in the post-World War II period were primarily motivated by the desire to reconstruct war torn cities. The forces of influence for planning and development in modern advanced capitalist societies are arguably set within the context of sustainable development. Many developed countries have witnessed a dramatic change in their territorial structures. Urban centres are extending into rural areas and surrounding hinterland, where large tracts of land are …

Generation Of High Quality Audio Natural Emotional Speech Corpus Using Task Based Mood Induction, Charlie Cullen, Brian Vaughan, Spyros Kousidis, Yi Wang, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Dermot Campbell Jan 2006

Generation Of High Quality Audio Natural Emotional Speech Corpus Using Task Based Mood Induction, Charlie Cullen, Brian Vaughan, Spyros Kousidis, Yi Wang, Ciaran Mcdonnell, Dermot Campbell

Conference papers

Detecting emotional dimensions [1] in speech is an area of great research interest, notably as a means of improving human computer interaction in areas such as speech synthesis [2]. In this paper, a method of obtaining high quality emotional audio speech assets is proposed. The methods of obtaining emotional content are subject to considerable debate, with distinctions between acted [3] and natural [4] speech being made based on the grounds of authenticity. Mood Induction Procedures (MIP’s) [5] are often employed to stimulate emotional dimensions in a controlled environment. This paper details experimental procedures based around MIP 4, using performance related …

Recruiting First Year Engineering Undergraduates, Eddie Conlon Jan 2006

Recruiting First Year Engineering Undergraduates, Eddie Conlon

Conference papers

This paper presents findings of three surveys conducted with first year students in the Faculty of Engineering in the Dublin Institute of Technology. It presents evidence on the reasons students study engineering, their sources of information on higher education programmes and the people who influence their decision to do engineering. It shows there are gaps in the students’ knowledge of their programmes and also between their expectations and their experience of their course. Some proposed areas of action are identified to increase both recruitment and retention. It is argued that projecting an image of engineering as a creative activity would …

A Dose Threshold For A Medium Transfer Bystander Effect For A Human Skin Cell Line, Zhengfeng Liou, Carmel Mothersill, Fiona Mcneill, Fiona Lyng, Soo Hyun Byun, Colin Seymour, William Prestwich

Articles

The existence of radiation-induced bystander effects mediated by diffusible factors is now accepted but the mechanisms and precise behavior at low doses remain unclear. We exposed cells to gamma doses in the range 0.04 mGy – 5 Gy, harvested the culture medium and transferred it to unirradiated reporter cells. Calcium fluxes and clonogenic survival were measured in the recipients. We show evidence for a dose threshold around 2 mGy for the human skin cell line used with a suggestion of increased survival below that dose. Similar experiments using direct gamma irradiation showed no reduction in survival until the dose exceeded …

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to develop a guide for parents of Eisenhower High School and the various feeder middle schools in the Yakima School District to help the eighth graders transitioning from middle school to high school. The intent of the program was to increase the ninth grade student's academic and social success by having parents involved in the transition along with various transition activities. To accomplish this purpose, a review of current literature, research and selected programs related to transitioning middle school students and parent involvement in the transition, were examined. The culminating guide was designed and …

A 5-Stage Cross-Cultural Reentry Training Model: Proactive Curriculum And Training Giude For Exchange Organization Representatives, Sponsor Teachers And Returning Student Sojourners, Stacey Anne Howell

All Graduate Projects

This project is the result of an exploration into the process and product of cross-cultural reentry; that is, reentry into one's country of origin following an extended stay in a host country. The history of reentry training programs in the United States was researched, the process of cross-cultural adjustment was explored, and research involving the identity development of adolescents and the effects of stress on adolescents and adolescent sojourners was reviewed. Following a review of the research in these areas, an extensive five-stage curriculum model for cross-cultural reentry training was designed. The curriculum model includes a complete training outline, a …

Fostering Academic Achievement For Out-Of-Home Students In Transition, Valory Porter Jan 2006

Fostering Academic Achievement For Out-Of-Home Students In Transition, Valory Porter

All Graduate Projects

This manuscript is intended to serve as a resource for instructors seeking to assist out-of-home youth to successfully transition from the foster care system to post•system living. Frequently, teens transitioning out of foster care have deficiencies in effective independent living skills, useful employment training, and knowledge of post-high school options. A discussion of the information supporting this position is provided, as well as a review of related literature and research. The implementation of a transitional curriculum focused on independent living skills will help provide at-risk youth in out-of-home care with the skills necessary to become positive, contributing members of society …

Trans-Atlantic Correlation Of Upper Cretaceous Marine Sediments, Marcus R. Ross, David E. Fastovsky Jan 2006
