Community Collaboration: Effective Partnerships With Steering Committees, Mary Banach, Sharyn Zunz, Nicole Lapointe
Journal of Extension
This article reports the findings of a study examining the development, use, and effectiveness of community-based steering committees at three different rural sites. Each site developed projects administered by local Extension Educators aimed at benefiting at-risk youth and families. The effectiveness of the steering committees was evaluated by whether conditions were cultivated that would lead to program sustainability. Factors examined at each site included: availability and deployment of resources; steering committee composition; and leadership\ownership of the project. The article details the results of the study and suggests some implications for the development of community partnerships.

Former 4-H Key Club Members' Perceptions Of The Impact Of "Giving" Life Skills Preparation On Their Civic Engagement, Penny Pennington, M Craig Edwards
Journal of Extension
Does 4-H make an impact on the civic engagement of adults? If so, do former 4-H members view the impact as being greater than that of other programming? This article describes perceptions of former 4-H Key Club members regarding the application of "giving" life skills preparation on their civic engagement. The impact of youth organizations on acquisition of "giving" life skills is also described. Participants "agreed" they were applying "giving" life skills acquired through 4-H, and that those experiences had a "major" impact on their civic engagement. It is recommended that "giving" life skills programming be continued.

Incorporating Service Learning And Extension In Inner City Middle Schools: A Model For Future Programming, Nicole Webster
Journal of Extension
The article describes a program model used to promote science-based learning through a service learning model in an inner city school. Through working collaboratively with Extension staff, a program was created to meet the growing academic and social needs of youth in the inner city school system. If greater emphasis is placed on programming efforts among Extension, the community, and public schools, successful programs can be created to enhance the learning of the inner city youth population.

A Teachable Moment: The Las Vegas Centennial, Jo Anne Kock, Vicki Agao
Journal of Extension
What an exciting time to learn Las Vegas history! In celebration of the 2005 Las Vegas Centennial, a children's book, Growing Up in Las Vegas, and an accompanying activity book for use in childcare provider training was developed. Amply illustrated, this fictional story based on historical facts and photos from 1905, stars five-year-old Ellie and her brother Billy. The curriculum contains 14 different activities that follow the illustrations in the book. Reaching over 1,500 adults and 2,000 children, adult participant evaluations showed a significant knowledge gain. The curriculum can be easily replicated and adapted to fit other geographic areas.

Selective Attention And Childhood Anxiety: The Associations Among Attention, Memory, Interpretive Biases And Anxiety, Sarah Watts
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This paper examined the links between selective attention, memory bias, interpretive bias, and anxiety problems in a community sample of 81 children (38 females) aged 9-17 years. Cognitive biases were assessed using a word and picture Dot Probe Discrimination task to assess selective attention, a memory task to assess a memory bias, and the CNCEQ to assess interpretive bias. Childhood anxiety was assessed using the parent and child versions of the RCMAS and RCADS. Significant associations were found between the three cognitive biases and childhood anxiety problems. In addition, selective attention was found to be associated with the selective abstraction …

Children Of Incarcerated Mothers, Kisha Smith
Children Of Incarcerated Mothers, Kisha Smith
Graduate Research Papers
Since 1990, the female prison population has increased significantly. In the United States, there are 721,500 incarcerated individuals who are parents of minor children. Many of these parents are mothers who experienced drug use and came from single parent families living in poverty.
Since 60 percent of children are primarily cared for by their mother, maternal incarceration results in many children being removed from their homes, resulting in internal and external problems as well as academic concerns. In addition, this situation can lead to emotional issues, such as grief and loss, and problems related to social adjustment. Consequently, children of …

Teenage Codependency: A Social Worker's Perspective, Diane Jean Ausilio
Theses Digitization Project
This research project explores social workers' definitions of codependency, assessment of codependency, and types of interventions for codependency, particularly among youth. Learning more about codependent treatment for young clients and families will aid practitioners and mental health workers to focus on appropriate assessment and treatment for teens and families rather than stereotyping and denying them resources and coping strategies.
Sustaining Child Outcomes From The Early Childhood Initiative Project: Evaluation Of School Age Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Amy Crans-Stafford
Sustaining Child Outcomes From The Early Childhood Initiative Project: Evaluation Of School Age Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Amy Crans-Stafford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research has shown that high quality early childcare can provide positive changes in children's academic, social, and behavioral development. These positive early experiences are essential for children who are at developmental risk. Unfortunately, the positive outcomes from early education programs often diminish or disappear over time. Research has clearly shown the benefits of developmentally appropriate, high quality early childhood intervention. However, limited research has been conducted on the influence of developmentally appropriate practices on child outcomes during the early elementary school years. The purpose of this study was to examine the outcome of DAP from children who were enrolled in …

Training Volunteers To Effectively Make Disciples Of Troubled Youth In The Emerging Postmodern Culture, Dwight Spotts
Training Volunteers To Effectively Make Disciples Of Troubled Youth In The Emerging Postmodern Culture, Dwight Spotts
Doctor of Ministry
One of the great opportunities for the Christian community in an emerging postmodern culture will be the renewed potential for incamational ministry to troubled youth. For over a half century the evangelical church in America has failed to significantly impact the problem of delinquency. This has not always been the reality. Yet current research pertaining to the relationship between religion and delinquency shows that when contextual variables are considered the church can have an inverse effect upon delinquency. In other words, the practice of religion does have something positive to offer troubled youth.
While it is has traditionally been assumed …

EDU-COM International Conference
Learning is a life-long process, it requires dedication and motivation on the students and lecturers part; and resources and moral support on the administrators part. A leader‘s duty in an educational institution is to provide a system where the lecturers achieve the desired learning outcome not only because they are empowered, competent and accountable, but also because they care. The co-administrators must exercise visionary leadership responsive to emerging learning needs of the nation; ensure adequate resources; promote appropriate technology; create and sustain a climate conducive to enhancing learning. The 21st century educational world is becoming highly competitive in many aspects. …

Changing The Story About Higher Education's Public Purposes And Work: Land-Grants, Liberty, And The Little Country Theatre, Scott Peters
Imagining America
Scott Peters, associate professor, Department of Education, Cornell University, examines the stories we tell about the history of higher education, using strategies of the humanities and the qualitative social sciences to illuminate competing accounts of the public mission of American land grant colleges. Specifically, he uncovers the historical relationship between culture and agriculture, building a bridge from Imagining America’s usual arena of the arts, humanities, and design to quite different kinds of work that are equally concerned with the layered meanings of place. His essay shows how the public mission of our colleges and universities has been—and is still being—negotiated …

Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research Faculty Research and Scholarship
In this paper, I respond to comments by Henggeler, Schoenwald, Borduin, and Swenson [Henngeler, S. W., Schoenwald, S. K., Borduin, C. M., & Swenson, C. C. (this issue). The Littell paper: Methodological critique and meta-analysis as Trojan horse. Children and Youth Services Review, doi: 10.1016/j.childyouth.2005.07.001] on my recent article, “Lessons from a systematic review of Multisystemic Therapy”. I identify factual and logical errors in their response, show how relevant research has been misinterpreted and misrepresented, and suggest constructive new directions for Multisystemic Therapy and the evidence-based practice movement.
