Voices From The Margins: ‘Black’ Caribbean And Mexican Heritage Women Educators In The Rural South, Lorraine Gilpin, Scott Beck Oct 2006

Voices From The Margins: ‘Black’ Caribbean And Mexican Heritage Women Educators In The Rural South, Lorraine Gilpin, Scott Beck

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

This paper explores the ways in which immigrant and migrant women educators in the rural South understand and construct narratives of their lives. The ‘Black’ Caribbean and Mexican heritage women educators in this study experience and interpret events in their lives, as women, minorities, postcolonial ‘subjects,’ and outsiders in the rural South, a region traditionally dominated by white patriarchal norms and prejudices. We assert that from this position of multiple marginality they construct important insights into the nature of education in the rural South. As so-called “Third-World women” living in the “First World” of the United States, the interpretations that …

The Abortion Rights Of Adolescents Should Be Coextensive With Those Of Adults--A Theoretical Framework, Chad M. Gerson Sep 2006

The Abortion Rights Of Adolescents Should Be Coextensive With Those Of Adults--A Theoretical Framework, Chad M. Gerson

ExpressO

The aim of this article is to argue that the abortion rights of adolescents should be coextensive with those of adults. The first section of the article reviews research in child development which has demonstrated that adolescents are able to make informed, mature decisions on procreative issues. The second section reviews cases which have defined the contours of adult women’s abortion rights, and argues that the reasoning behind those holdings also applies to adolescents.

Resident Ownership In New Hampshire's "Mobile Home Parks": A Report On Economic Outcomes (Revised 2010), Sally Ward, Charles A. French, Kelly Giraud Sep 2006

Resident Ownership In New Hampshire's "Mobile Home Parks": A Report On Economic Outcomes (Revised 2010), Sally Ward, Charles A. French, Kelly Giraud

Carsey Publications

Since 1984, the New Hampshire Community Loan Fund has been helping residents of manufactured home communities purchase the land underneath their homes. Since then, homeowners have purchased 80 manufactured home communities and converted them into “Resident Owned Communities” (ROCs) in New Hampshire. These communities now include 4,200 homeowners. The premise of the loan fund program is that resident ownership provides both an important vehicle for preserving affordable housing and economic benefits to homeowners in ROCs. Until now, no systematic data have been available to confirm the benefits. To fill that gap, the fund contracted researchers from the Carsey Institute at …

Behavior Problems In Children Of Battered Women, Stacey Monahan

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to address this question: Is there a relationship between the trauma symptoms of mothers and the behavior problems of their children in the context of domestic violence? Mothers' trauma symptoms significantly correlated with their children's behavior problems in these children between the ages of 3 to 10 years. Pearson correlations revealed that the mothers' defensive avoidance scale scores significantly correlated with their children's anxious/depressed and internalizing scale scores, mothers' depression and impaired self-reference scale scores significantly correlated with their children's withdrawn and internalizing scale scores, and mothers' dysfunctional sexual behavior and tension reduction behavior …

The Effects Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation In Early Childhood Settings, Susan M. Sheridan, Brandy L. Clarke, Lisa Knoche

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Conjoint behavioral consultation (CBC) is an ecological model of service delivery that brings together parents and educators to collaboratively address shared concerns for a child. This study provides exploratory data investigating the effects of CBC on home and school concerns for 48 children aged 6 and younger. Single-subject methods were used to evaluate the effects of CBC on individual children. Effect sizes across cases yielded large median effect sizes (0.97 at home and 1.06 at school). Results of paired sample t tests suggested significant improvements in parents' perceptions of communication with their child's teacher and in the overall parent-teacher relationship. …

The Effects Of Prolonged Job Insecurity On The Psychological Well-Being Of Workers, Cynthia Rocha, Jennifer Hause Crowell, Andrea K. Mccarter Sep 2006

The Effects Of Prolonged Job Insecurity On The Psychological Well-Being Of Workers, Cynthia Rocha, Jennifer Hause Crowell, Andrea K. Mccarter

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Job insecurity has been increasing since the 1980s. While researchers have found job insecurity to be negatively associated with multiple indicators of well-being for workers and their families in cross sectional studies, less is known about the long term effects of prolonged job insecurity. Specifically, there is a need to collect measures of both insecurity and its consequences at multiple time periods. The current study followed workers for 3 1/2 years to assess the effects of chronic job insecurity on psychological distress. Results indicate that while workers reported increased feelings of security over time, there were longer term negative effects …

A Qualitative Examination Of The Psychosocial Adjustment Of Khmer Refugees In Three Massachusetts Communities, Leakhena Nou

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

This paper uses a sociological stress process model to explore the Khmer adult refugees’ experience in Massachusetts. The analysis is based on the responses of three focus groups in the Khmer communities of Lowell, Lynn, and Revere, Massachusetts. The focus groups provided an in-depth understanding of sources of stress, stress mediators, and psychosocial adjustment/adaptational patterns for Khmer refugees who had experienced the Cambodian genocide. Symptoms and reactions associated with underlying causes of mental health problems had culturally specific relevance to physical illness and mental health.

Reexamining Relational Youth Ministry: Implications From The Theology Of Bonhoeffer, Andrew Root

Faculty Publications

Youth ministry often focuses on building relationships between youth ministers and adolescents. But to what end? A relationship designed to influence the other is no relationship and is unworthy of Christ. In a true relationship Christians must be willing fully to share the place of another.

Perceived Family Support, Acculturation, And Life Satisfaction In Mexican American Youth: A Mixed-Methods Exploration, Lisa M. Edwards, Shane J. Lopez

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

In this article, the authors describe a mixed-methods study designed to explore perceived family support, acculturation, and life satisfaction among 266 Mexican American adolescents. Specifically, the authors conducted a thematic analysis of open-ended responses to a question about life satisfaction to understand participants’ perceptions of factors that contributed to their overall satisfaction with life. The authors also conducted hierarchical regression analyses to investigate the independent and interactive contributions of perceived support from family and Mexican and Anglo acculturation orientations on life satisfaction. Convergence of mixed-methods findings demonstrated that perceived family support and Mexican orientation were significant predictors of life satisfaction …

Benefits Of Mentoring: Head Start Teacher Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of A Local Implementation Of A Teacher Professional Development Initiative, Grace Onchwari

Essays in Education

The study examined the extent to which a national Head Start early literacy staff development mentor-coach initiative model was effective in local Head Start Programs. The assessment of the initiative was based on analysis of 44 teacher interviews across two mid-western states. The analysis of the outcomes identifies teachers as being positive about the initiative and implementing literacy practices presented in the initiative in their classrooms. The research results point to the positive effectiveness of the mentor-coach model and support similar initiatives in the future for enhancing teacher instructional practices.

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

About half of 2,581 low-income mothers reported reading daily to their children. At 14 months, the odds of reading daily increased by the child being fi rstborn or female. At 24 and 36 months, these odds increased by maternal verbal ability or education and by the child being fi rstborn or of Early Head Start status. White mothers read more than did Hispanic or African American mothers. For English-speaking children, concurrent reading was associated with vocabulary and comprehension at 14 months, and with vocabulary and cognitive development at 24 months. A pattern of daily reading over the 3 data points …

John Dewey’S Philosophy Of Education Is Alive And Well, Rebecca L. Carver, Richard P. Enfield Jun 2006

John Dewey’S Philosophy Of Education Is Alive And Well, Rebecca L. Carver, Richard P. Enfield

Education and Culture

Offering an introduction to both John Dewey’s philosophy of education and the 4-H Youth Development Program, this paper draws clear connections between these two topics. Concepts explored include Dewey’s principles of continuity and interaction, and contagion with respect to learning. Roles of educational leaders (including teachers) are investigated in the context of a discussion about the structuring of opportunities for students to develop habits of meaningful and life-long learning. Specific examples are described in depth to demonstrate, from a Deweyan perspective, the educational process and value of 4-H participation. Brief comments are made about the place of 4-H in the …

Mentoring: A Promising Approach For Involving At-Risk Youth In 4-H, Kathleen Riggs, Thomas Lee, James P. Marshall, Ellen Serfustini Jun 2006

Mentoring: A Promising Approach For Involving At-Risk Youth In 4-H, Kathleen Riggs, Thomas Lee, James P. Marshall, Ellen Serfustini

Journal of Extension

An effective way to reach at-risk youth is by establishing a positive adult/youth relationship through mentoring. Utah's Youth and Families with Promise (YFP) program combines mentoring with the benefits of structured 4-H. Participants were surveyed using a post-then-pre design. The differences in mean scores indicated statistically significant improvements in academic achievement, social competence, and family bonds. Youth reported increased levels of community attachment, and parents reported increased levels of parental efficacy. Extension professionals can use mentoring, in combination with 4-H, to reach and better serve at-risk audiences by introducing them to the benefits of 4-H as part of their mentoring …

Learning From Latino Community Efforts, Peggy Gregory, Joe Camarillo, Dave Campbell, Steve Dasher Jun 2006

Learning From Latino Community Efforts, Peggy Gregory, Joe Camarillo, Dave Campbell, Steve Dasher

Journal of Extension

The study described here documents interviews with 101 Latino adults identified as either participants or non-participants in specific activities in five California communities. Both groups were asked to recommend strategies for organizations that seek to provide programs for youth and families. Results indicate that the approach to recruiting adults needs to be reframed in ways that de-emphasize the traditional concept of a volunteer leader. Findings also indicate that there can be no short cuts to investing time in building relationships that create trust and a level of comfort essential to many residents for their participation.

The Regulation Of Intercountry Adoption, Mary E. Hansen, Daniel Pollack May 2006

The Regulation Of Intercountry Adoption, Mary E. Hansen, Daniel Pollack

ExpressO

As of January 2006, the United States was the only major receiver of children through intercountry adoption that had not implemented the 1993 Hague Convention on Intercountry Adoption. The U.S. signed the Hague Convention in 1994, but did not pass implementing legislation until 2000. Regulations pursuant to the legislation were proposed in 2003, but final regulations did not go into effect until March 2006. The slow pace was partly the result of Congressional wrangling over designation of a regulator and partly the result of a prolonged conversation between the designated regulator and the adoption community over specific regulations.

Finalization of …
