Are Individual Differences In Performance On Perceptual And Cognitive Optimization Problems Determined By General Intelligence?, Nicholas R. Burns, Michael D. Lee, Douglas Vickers

The Journal of Problem Solving

Studies of human problem solving have traditionally used deterministic tasks that require the execution of a systematic series of steps to reach a rational and optimal solution. Most real-world problems, however, are characterized by uncertainty, the need to consider an enormous number of variables and possible courses of action at each stage in solving the problem, and the need to optimize the solution subject to multiple interacting constraints. There are reliable individual differences in people’s abilities to solve such realistic problems. It also seems likely that people’s ability to solve these difficult problems reflects, or depends on, their intelligence. We …

Making Research Real: Is Action Research A Suitable Methodology For Medical Information Security Investigations?, Patricia A. Williams Dec 2006

Making Research Real: Is Action Research A Suitable Methodology For Medical Information Security Investigations?, Patricia A. Williams

Australian Information Security Management Conference

In the medical field, information security is an important yet vastly underrated issue. Research into the protection of sensitive medical data is often technically focused and does not address information systems and behavioural aspects integral to effective information security implementation. Current information security policy and guidelines are strategically oriented which, whilst relevant to large organisations, are less supportive to smaller enterprises such as primary care practices. Further, the conservative nature of the medical profession has been shown to hinder investigation into information technology use and management, making effective improvement based on research problematical. It is an environment which relies greatly …

Social Engineering And Its Impact Via The Internet, Matthew J. Warren, Shona Leitch Dec 2006

Social Engineering And Its Impact Via The Internet, Matthew J. Warren, Shona Leitch

Australian Information Security Management Conference

Historically social engineering attacks were limited upon a single organisation or single individual at a time. The impact of the Internet and growth of E-Business has allowed social engineering techniques to be applied at a global level. The paper will discuss how new social engineering techniques are being applied and puts forward a conceptual model to allow an understanding of how social engineering attacks are planned and implemented against E-Business activities.

Wireless Youth: The Social Construction Of Youth Identity, Gabriel Chabran

Whittier Scholars Program

This project provides analysis of Whittier Uptown youth culture among males who use media, such as means of mass communication including radio, television, and video games. This study took place from winter 2005 to spring 2006. Research includes interviewing 10 males between the ages 18-24 to examine how they have used different forms of art and media to construct their identities. This project begins with a historical narrative of youth culture identities and how identity has been traditionally viewed by the “mainstream”, and how identity is constructed in the context of the social construction of youth culture of Uptown Whittier. …

Religion And Subjective Well-Being Among China’S Elderly Population, Philip H. Brown, Brian Tierney Dec 2006

Religion And Subjective Well-Being Among China’S Elderly Population, Philip H. Brown, Brian Tierney

Working Papers in Economics

Evidence from developed and developing countries alike demonstrates a strongly positive relationship between religiosity and happiness, particularly for women and particularly among the elderly. Using survey data from the oldest old in China, we find a strong negative relationship between religious participation and subjective well-being in a rich multivariate logistic framework that controls for demographics, health and disabilities, living arrangements and marital status, wealth and income, lifestyle and social networks, and location. In contrast to other studies, we also find that religion has a larger effect on subjective well-being on men than women.

Lawyers, Citizens, And The Internal Point Of View, W. Bradley Wendel Dec 2006

Lawyers, Citizens, And The Internal Point Of View, W. Bradley Wendel

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Imagine two citizens, one of whom obeys the law only in order to avoid being sanctioned for noncompliance, the other of whom looks to the law for guidance, and regards legal directives as legitimate reasons for action in themselves. These two hypothetical citizens represent Oliver Wendell Holmes' metaphorical bad man and H.L.A. Hart's puzzled man, respectively. Both citizens take the law into account in their practical reasoning, but they are concerned with very different kinds of reasons created by law. Hart argues that the bad citizen's point of view is inadequate to capture the law's distinctive normativity. In response, some …

Stuart Chase And Red Scare #2, 1946-1954, Richard Vangermeersch Dec 2006

Stuart Chase And Red Scare #2, 1946-1954, Richard Vangermeersch

Special Collections (Miscellaneous)

I have written an academic piece, “The Marking of Stuart Chase As a ‘Red Accountant’--An Epic (1917-1921)” on Stuart Chase (SC) and Red Scare #1, 1917-1921. The current piece is a much more casual type writing and, hopefully, will be a part of the SC website. My purpose in this piece is to illustrate how SC was smeared in the Reece Committee Report of 1954 without any possibility of retort before the Committee. This piece might inspire a much more academic work on the Reece Committee--a rich topic indeed. This piece also shows that SC was a marked man by …

Socially Disorganized Rural Communities, Kenneth D. Tunnell Dec 2006

Socially Disorganized Rural Communities, Kenneth D. Tunnell

Justice Studies Faculty and Staff Research

The article talks about the social disorganization of rural communities in the U.S. It is stated that family farming has been on the decline for decades, with the numbers of farmers dropping by 16 million since 1950 and farms decreasing by over 4 million during the past century. It is inferred that a part of a community's history and way of life are being forfeited when local business are closing. According to the author, the theory of social disorganization emphasizes social integration and stability as necessary conditions for community. It offers some of the disadvantages of disorganized communities, such as …
