Casimir Forces And Non-Newtonian Gravitation, Roberto Onofrio Oct 2006

Casimir Forces And Non-Newtonian Gravitation, Roberto Onofrio

Dartmouth Scholarship

The search for non-relativistic deviations from Newtonian gravitation can lead to new phenomena signalling the unification of gravity with the other fundamental interactions. Various recent theoretical frameworks indicate a possible window for non-Newtonian forces with gravitational coupling strength in the micrometre range. The major expected background in the same range is attributable to the Casimir force or variants of it if dielectric materials, rather than conducting ones, are considered. Here we review the measurements of the Casimir force performed so far in the micrometre range and how they determine constraints on non-Newtonian gravitation, also discussing the dominant sources of false …

The Politics Of Space And Culture In Santiago, Chile's Street Markets, Joel Stillerman Oct 2006

The Politics Of Space And Culture In Santiago, Chile's Street Markets, Joel Stillerman

Peer Reviewed Articles

Recent discussions of contentious politics have focused on struggles in and over space and place. This article builds upon these concerns by using ethnographic, interview, and documentary data to analyze the spatial politics of street market vendors in Santiago, Chile. Drawing upon Lefebvre’s concepts of perceived, conceived, and lived space as well as ideas drawn from research on space and protest, I show how street market vendors build upon spatial routines, a sense of place, political alliances, and scale jumping in their self-defense strategies at the local, national, and international scales. The findings illustrate Lefebvre’s argument that the advance of …

Development And Discontentment In South Asia (With Special Reference To North-East India), Ajailiu Niumai

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This paper, from the sociology of South Asia perspective, clearly reveals a consensus on the significance of trade relations and increased social mobility both within and across the nations of South Asia as factors that could enhance an overall economic integration of the region. It also examines the debates on the matrix of relationship between development and discontentment in North East India involving cross-border movement, social mobility and trade relations. The discourse also showed a changing attitude towards North East region. This paper attempts to examine the contours of the debates on development and discontentment, rather than executing an in-depth …

Vehicle & Infrastructure Relationships In Hydrogen Transportation Networks: Development Of The H2vision Modeling Tool, Patrick Meyer Oct 2006

Vehicle & Infrastructure Relationships In Hydrogen Transportation Networks: Development Of The H2vision Modeling Tool, Patrick Meyer

Theses

The political instability of acquiring oversea oil resources, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and the desire for inexpensive energy have recently driven a shift of focus towards hydrogen energy. It has become increasingly evident that there are significant barriers facing the development of a hydrogen-based energy system – a system commonly referred to as the “hydrogen economy”. The small quantities of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles that have been deployed to date are not numerous enough to facilitate the growth of a substantial refueling infrastructure. Additionally, the underdeveloped and extremely limited infrastructure has imposed significant convenience costs upon consumers. …
