Predictors Of Paternal Involvement In Childcare In Dual-Earner Families With Young Children, Julie N. Jacobs, Michelle L. Kelley Jan 2006

Predictors Of Paternal Involvement In Childcare In Dual-Earner Families With Young Children, Julie N. Jacobs, Michelle L. Kelley

Psychology Faculty Publications

Dual-earner parents (N = 119) of preschool children enrolled in licensed childcare centers completed anonymous questionnaires that examined work and family variables as related to paternal involvement in three areas: engagement (i.e., one-on-one interaction with the child), responsibility (i.e., taking care of the child’s needs), and accessibility (i.e., being available to the child without directly interacting). Paternal responsibility was predicted by beliefs about fathering and structural variables (e.g., hours fathers and mothers worked). The percentage of time fathers spent as their child’s primary caregiver was predicted by structural variables (e.g., mothers’ work hours) and belief variables (e.g., men’s beliefs about …

Value Creation And Value Capture In Non-Profit Partnerships, Beth Birmingham Jan 2006

Value Creation And Value Capture In Non-Profit Partnerships, Beth Birmingham

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The purpose of this research is to study how non-profit organizations create value from partnerships, specifically, partnerships between academic institutions and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Apart from the goals of the partnership per se, how do they create long term value for their respective organizations separate from the partnership outcomes? Educational partnerships between academic institutions and other sectors have become common and somewhat necessary in the past decade. The NGOs examined in this study benefited from partnership with an academic institution in the areas of staff development and organizational capacity building. The universities in this study benefited from direct involvement …

Telling Our Stories: A Phenomenological Study Of The Leader’S Gendered Experience Of Self-Disclosing, Dee Giffin Flaherty Jan 2006

Telling Our Stories: A Phenomenological Study Of The Leader’S Gendered Experience Of Self-Disclosing, Dee Giffin Flaherty

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Leadership is a personal process that involves creating communities and influencing change through relationships of influence. This research explores one aspect of leadership, that of self-disclosing. The self-disclosure of leaders affects all aspects of leadership. Self-disclosure is personal in that people’s voices are unique and come from their sense of self. The appropriate use of self-disclosure can facilitate increased self-awareness, and greater mental and physical health. Leaders can influence change by the strategic sharing of their disclosures. Communities are built when people can identify with leaders stories and be guided toward a shared vision. The purpose of this study is …

Access To Care: The Experience Of Community-Dwelling Older Adults Receiving Medicare And Medicaid, Mary Ann Simanello Phd, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

Access to care represents a leading health indicator for meeting the complex healthcare and social needs of an exploding population of older adults living in the United States. This qualitative study was undertaken to discover the essence of access to care by community-dwelling older adults with Medicare and Medicaid. Participants were recruited from a metropolitan area in Southern California. Thirteen women and men aged 65 to 91 described their experiences with accessing care during a face-to-face, audio-recorded interview. The study aimed to: describe experiences of access to care, identify facilitators and barriers to care, and describe the effects of facilitators …

Coalition Formation Theories Revisited: An Empirical Investigation Of Aumann's Hypothesis, Vincent Chua, Dan S. Felsenthal Jan 2006

Coalition Formation Theories Revisited: An Empirical Investigation Of Aumann's Hypothesis, Vincent Chua, Dan S. Felsenthal

Research Collection School Of Economics

In one of the earliest attempts to examine the effect of a priori voting power on actual political phenomena, Riker (1959) looked at changes in party affiliation in the French National Assembly in 1953–54, and used these data to test the hypothesis that deputies who switched parties were seeking thereby to increase their a priori voting power. His findings were negative, or at best inconclusive.

Commune-Level Estimation Of Poverty Measure And Its Application In Cambodia, Tomoki Fujii Jan 2006

Commune-Level Estimation Of Poverty Measure And Its Application In Cambodia, Tomoki Fujii

Research Collection School Of Economics

Cambodia is still suffering from the legacy of civil conflict after more than a decade. With over one-third of the population living below the poverty line, poverty remains one of the most serious problems in Cambodia. A number of governmental bodies, local and international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and international organizations operating in Cambodia have made eradicating poverty a priority and have established many social programmes to this end. In designing such programmes, the efficient allocation of resources is essential for making poverty alleviation more cost-effective. Targeting is often helpful for this purpose because one can avoid wasting resources on the …

The Servant-Leader And The Team: Love Without Measure!, Robson M. Marinho Jan 2006

The Servant-Leader And The Team: Love Without Measure!, Robson M. Marinho

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

I don't necessarily have to like my players and partners. But, as a leader I must love them. Love is loyalty, love is teamwork, love respects dignity and individuality. This is the strength of any organization. -Vince Lombardi In a television interview, General Norman Schwarzkopf was faced with the following question (Kouzes & Posner, 1997, p. 329): - How would you like to be remembered in the future? The answer was simple: - That I loved my troops. That my troops loved me. One would hardly expect that kind of answer from a military leader, leaders whose relationship with subordinates …

Maestro: Exploring The Development Of A Servant-Leader, Martha Helland Jan 2006

Maestro: Exploring The Development Of A Servant-Leader, Martha Helland

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

I don't know that I can define or articulate my leadership style. I can only think that I always tried to be prepared musically. Beyond that I guess I just tried to get the job done in a way that enables others to do their best and that affirms and supports them as professionals and as wondeiful people. -Henry Charles Smith A large portion of existing servant-leadership literature focuses on defining what it is, describing how it differs from other leadership practices, discussing its merits, verifying its efficacy, and persuading others to embrace and practice its principles across a broad …

Student Beliefs And Self-Reported Juvenile Deliquency: A Test Of General Strain Theory, Jacqueline Nicole Canady Jan 2006

Student Beliefs And Self-Reported Juvenile Deliquency: A Test Of General Strain Theory, Jacqueline Nicole Canady

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study is to test Robert Agnew's General Strain Theory. The researcher applied the theory to secondary data of high school sophomores utilizing Educational Longitudinal Survey of 2002. The study sought to understand whether Agnew's strain theory is applicable to high school environments. The findings indicate some support for Agnew's Revised Strain Theory. Conversely, sex is substantially insignificant concerning self-reported juvenile delinquency within schools. Furthermore, without accounting for students' upbringing and socioeconomic background Agnew's General Strain Theory cannot explain differences in race and delinquency. In conclusion, the study suggests further research of Agnew's theory, concerning both race …

Does Physical Disability Truly Create Impairment In Adjustment To College Life?, Jennifer R. Hurst Jan 2006

Does Physical Disability Truly Create Impairment In Adjustment To College Life?, Jennifer R. Hurst

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research utilized a mixed methods design to explore the differences between students with and without disabilities in perceived social support, coping style, self efficacy, and college adjustment. In addition, the influence of athletic participation on the above variables was examined in the sub-sample of students with disabilities. Neither survey nor interview results supported any differences between students with disabilities and students without disabilities on the study variables. Results suggested that discrepancies in college outcome variables (i.e. matriculation and persistence) were not a result of differences in disability status, but are the result of differences in adjustment, perceived social support, …

Deconstructing Hate Speech In The Drc: A Psychological Media Sensitization Campaign, Johann Vollhardt, Marie Coutin, Ervin Staub, George Weiss, Johan Deflander Jan 2006

Deconstructing Hate Speech In The Drc: A Psychological Media Sensitization Campaign, Johann Vollhardt, Marie Coutin, Ervin Staub, George Weiss, Johan Deflander

Journal of Hate Studies

This article describes an interdisciplinary and theory-based radio campaign that has been developed to counteract, and sensitize citizens to hate speech in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The article provides a brief overview of the instrumentalization of hate speech and the violent effects it has had in the Great Lakes region of Africa. A summary of the most recent events in the DRC is given. Here, hate speech was used in the presidential election campaigns in 2006, contributing to a polarization of the country and giving the campaign an ethnic underpinning. A radio program developed to counteract hate …

Realizing The Potential Of The Ambidextrous Firm, James Arthur Robins Jan 2006

Realizing The Potential Of The Ambidextrous Firm, James Arthur Robins

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Sustaining innovation in the face of pressures to be cost-competitive and make effective use of existing resources is not a new challenge, but recent acceleration of competition has pushed this issue high on the agenda for managers and researchers. Organizing and managing the “ambidextrous” company – a firm that excel in exploring new areas of productive knowledge and exploiting existing capabilities – has emerged as a major concern of strategic management. In this paper, we explore coordination problems that make it difficult for firms to realize their potential as ambidextrous competitors. Organizations may possess superior skills for both exploration and …

Self, Other And The Sociopolitical In Politically Active Women Survivors Of Domestic Violence, Molly Ann Hedrick Jan 2006

Self, Other And The Sociopolitical In Politically Active Women Survivors Of Domestic Violence, Molly Ann Hedrick

Open Access Dissertations

This research examined experiences with interpersonal, intrapersonal, and structural violence in politically active women survivors of domestic violence. This study also explored how (if at all) these women described processes which Freire (2003) called critical consciousness and liberating action, and what these women can tell us about the processes of change. Participants were 16 survivors of domestic violence recruited from Sisters Overcoming Abusive Relationships (SOAR) in Rhode Island. SOAR is an organization run entirely by survivors of domestic violence and provides political activism with the goal of ending domestic violence. I utilized a mixed-methods, transformative and social constructivist concurrent design. …

The Family As A Context For Religious And Spiritual Development In Children And Youth, Chris J. Boyatzis, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks Jan 2006

The Family As A Context For Religious And Spiritual Development In Children And Youth, Chris J. Boyatzis, David C. Dollahite, Loren D. Marks

Faculty Publications

Our chapter addresses how the family promotes or hinders transcendence of the self in children, that is, how the family is a context in which spiritual development occurs. Due to space limitations, our emphasis is on socialization and interaction processes within the family and not on other issues such as psychodynamic processes (e.g., Rizzuto, 1979) or faith development (e.g., Fowler, 1981). There are many motivations to explore family socialization of religious and spiritual development. One, family spirituality and religiosity are linked with many desirable outcomes and inversely with negative outcomes in children and youth. (Other chapters in this volume examine …

Women's Body Image, Patriarchy, And Photography: A Pictorial Content Analysis Of National Geographic's Representation Of Women., Kathryn D. Newhouse Jan 2006

Women's Body Image, Patriarchy, And Photography: A Pictorial Content Analysis Of National Geographic's Representation Of Women., Kathryn D. Newhouse

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Women have been depicted within media outlets such as magazines as domestic caretakers for generations. While history has at times been positive in its representation of women, especially during World War II and the government’s plea for women to work in industry, the vast majority of media outlets after the war again created the housewife image from the years before the war for women to follow. The popular governmental posters with “Rosie the Riveter” stating, “We Can Do It!” were replaced with images of a happy wife tending house for her husband fresh from the war. While the posters were …

Finding Meaning In Sustainability And A Livelihood Based On Tourism: An Ethnographic Case Study Of Rural Citizens In The Aysen Region Of Chile., Trace E. Gale Jan 2006

Finding Meaning In Sustainability And A Livelihood Based On Tourism: An Ethnographic Case Study Of Rural Citizens In The Aysen Region Of Chile., Trace E. Gale

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Development. Livelihood. Sustainability. Tourism. The post-positivistic approach of this study helped to illuminate the complexity that underscores these four simple words. It helped to fill knowledge gaps through exploration of the lived experience of tourism-based livelihoods within the Aysen region of southern Chile. With an understanding of this lived experience, the identification of more feasible and meaningful development interventions and policies becomes more likely. Results were organized around seven key areas of focus: (1) shaping factors for tourism-based livelihoods, (2) how tourism-based livelihood strategies added meaning, (3) the role that alternative forms of tourism played, (4) tourism livelihood tactics, (5) …

George Eliot And The Anxious Construction Of The Domestic Other: Racial Inheritance, Radical Femininity And Masculinity, And National Identity In "The Spanish Gypsy" And "Daniel Deronda"., Christina E. Godlewski Jan 2006

George Eliot And The Anxious Construction Of The Domestic Other: Racial Inheritance, Radical Femininity And Masculinity, And National Identity In "The Spanish Gypsy" And "Daniel Deronda"., Christina E. Godlewski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This dissertation seeks to articulate the extent to which George Eliot engages in an active dialogue with contemporary scientific thought, particularly in respect to England's Jewish and Gypsy populations. I examine The Spanish Gypsy and Daniel Deronda to determine Eliot's position in relation to ideologies on race, gender, and class. Eliot's texts manage to expose some of the contradictions regarding these two "domestic others" within the dominant discourses of the Victorian period. Chapter one sets out my critical and methodological framework and foregrounds the discursive proximity between the Gypsies, the Jews, the working classes, and women in the Victorian period. …

Multicultural Education In The Mental Health Professions: A Meta-Analytic Review, Timothy B. Smith, Madonna G. Constantine, Todd W. Dunn, Jared M. Dinehart, Jared A. Montoya Jan 2006

Multicultural Education In The Mental Health Professions: A Meta-Analytic Review, Timothy B. Smith, Madonna G. Constantine, Todd W. Dunn, Jared M. Dinehart, Jared A. Montoya

Faculty Publications

The American Psychological Association and many other professional mental health organizations require graduate programs to provide education in multicultural issues. However, the effectiveness of multicultural education has been debated in the literature over the past several years. The overall purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of multicultural education using meta-analytic methodologies. Findings revealed that multicultural education interventions were typically associated with positive outcomes across a wide variety of participant and study characteristics. Multicultural education interventions that were explicitly based on theory and research yielded outcomes nearly twice as beneficial as those that were not. Priorities for future …

Citizens On Patrol: Community Policing And The Territorialization Of Public Space In Seattle, Washington, Marcia Rae England Jan 2006

Citizens On Patrol: Community Policing And The Territorialization Of Public Space In Seattle, Washington, Marcia Rae England

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation shows how organizations, including local government and police, and residents within Seattle, Washingtons East Precinct define and police the contours of community, neighborhoods and public space. Under the rubric of public safety, these players create territorial geographies that seek to include only those who fit the narrowly conceived idea of a neighbor. Territoriality is exercised against the social Other in an attempt to build a cohesive community while at the same time excluding those who are seen as different or as non-conformant to acceptable behaviors in the neighborhood. This research provides a framework through which to examine how …

Infant Safe Haven Laws: Legislating In The Culture Of Life, Carol Sanger Jan 2006

Infant Safe Haven Laws: Legislating In The Culture Of Life, Carol Sanger

Faculty Scholarship

This Article analyzes the politics, implementation, and influence of Infant Safe Haven laws. These laws, enacted across the states in the early 2000s in response to much-publicized discoveries of dead and abandoned infants, provide for the legal abandonment of newborns. They offer new mothers immunity and anonymity in exchange for leaving their babies at designated Safe Havens. Yet despite widespread enactment, the laws have had relatively little impact on the phenomenon of infant abandonment. This Article explains why this is so, focusing particularly on a disconnect between the legislative scheme and the characteristics of neonaticidal mothers that makes the use …

The Politics Of Garbage: Municipal Solid Waste In Oaxaca, Mexico, Sarah Anne Moore Jan 2006

The Politics Of Garbage: Municipal Solid Waste In Oaxaca, Mexico, Sarah Anne Moore

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This dissertation analyzes the politics of garbage in Oaxaca, Mexico. In particular, it explores the tactics used by a marginalized colonia near the dump to affect waste management and local development. This colonia provokes garbage crises by blocking the metropolitan areas access to its dump. As a result, garbage builds up in the city and public officials are forced to negotiate with colonia residents. I argue that two prior processes are essential to the success of this strategy. First, the mid-sized city in southern Mexico implemented many new waste management practices during the latter half of the 20th century and …

Beyond Lawrence: Metaprivacy And Punishment, Jamal Greene Jan 2006

Beyond Lawrence: Metaprivacy And Punishment, Jamal Greene

Faculty Scholarship

Lawrence v. Texas remains, after three years of precedential life, an opinion in search of a principle. It is both libertarian – Randy Barnett has called it the constitutionalization of John Stuart Mill's On Liberty – and communitarian – William Eskridge has described it as the gay rights movement's Brown v. Board of Education. It is simultaneously broad, in its evocation of our deepest spiritual commitments, and narrow, in its self-conscious attempts to avoid condemning laws against same-sex marriage, prostitution, and bestiality. This Article reconciles these competing claims on Lawrence's jurisprudential legacy. In Part I, it defends the …

Edwin S. Cohen, Michael J. Graetz

Faculty Scholarship

This is not the first time I have spoken to honor Edwin S. Cohen. I spoke at two of his retirements – at least – and in the Rotunda at both his 75th and 80th birthday celebrations. Each time, and on many other occasions over the years when I have spoken about tax law or policy in his presence, I would always steal a glance at Eddie, looking for that twinkle in his eyes, hoping to bring a smile to his face, or even an outright giggle. Today, I know I will still look, as I will for years to …

Optimizing Consumer Credit Markets And Bankruptcy Policy, Ronald J. Mann Jan 2006

Optimizing Consumer Credit Markets And Bankruptcy Policy, Ronald J. Mann

Faculty Scholarship

This Article explores the relationship between consumer credit markets and bankruptcy policy. In general, I argue that the causative relationships running between borrowing and bankruptcy compel a new strategy for policing the conduct of lenders and borrowers in modern consumer credit markets. The strategy must be sensitive to the role of the credit card in lending markets and must recognize that both issuers and cardholders are well placed to respond to the increased levels of spending and indebtedness. In the latter parts of the Article, I recommend mandatory minimum payment requirements, a tax on distressed credit card debt, and the …
