Bio-Bibliography: John Barron Mays (1914-1987), Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

John Barron Mays developed a humane sociological perspective with multiple roots, including formal training in English, firsthand experience in a settlement house, a distinguished university professorship in sociology, and lifelong work as an active poet. Mays’ felicitous professional publications often spoke not only to university colleagues but also to constituencies beyond the halls of academe on a series of interrelated topics, including adolescence, criminology, education, urban life, and poetry.

Theory, Values, And Practice In The Legal Lifeworld Of Sociological Jurisprudence: Roscoe Pound’S Views On Professional Women, Michael R. Hill Jan 2006

Theory, Values, And Practice In The Legal Lifeworld Of Sociological Jurisprudence: Roscoe Pound’S Views On Professional Women, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The lived social dimensions of Roscoe Pound’s theories of sociological jurisprudence deserve criticism in light of his often progressive worldview and frequent support of civil liberties. Especially important in this regard are his views on women. Despite Sayre’s (1948: 390) assertion that “there is no dualism to Pound,” the archival record reveals internal contradictions. That is to say, Pound’s attitudes toward women were multi-dimensional. His social attitudes-inpractice informed his sociological ideas and thus illustrate the lived conflicts in his professional lifeworld.

Sociology And Poetry: An Introduction, Michael R. Hill Jan 2006

Sociology And Poetry: An Introduction, Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Poetry is a sociological reality. It has an institutional location within society, plays an important part in everyday social interaction, and promises very real results as a site for conceiving and explicating alternative social constellations. Simultaneously, poetry is sometimes difficult to grasp by those of decidedly a prosaic bent, and this includes too many sociologists. As poetry shapes — and is in turn shaped by — the active use of language in our culture on the respective parts of authors, speakers, hearers, readers, etc., the relevance and meaning of poetry can escape the sociological imagination when sociologists frame the social …

Factors Influencing Girls' Choice Of Information Technology Careers, Monica Adya, Kate Kaiser Jan 2006

Factors Influencing Girls' Choice Of Information Technology Careers, Monica Adya, Kate Kaiser

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Many western nations have experienced declining numbers of women in the information technology (IT) workforce (Trauth, Nielsen, & von Hellens, 2003). Between 1996 and 2002, women in the U.S. IT workforce declined from 41% to 34.9% (ITAA, 2003). This can hamper diversity and reduce the talent pool that can address needs of diverse end-users (Florida & Gates, 2002). Why do women choose IT careers or reject them? Multidisciplinary research on career genderization reveals gender imbalance (Trauth, Nielsen, & von Hellens, 2003). Career decisions against math, science, and technology (MST) are often made as early as age 11 without understanding long-term …

Faith Based Organizations And Rural Transportation, Tom Seekins Ph.D., Andrea Hartsell, Diana Spas, University Of Montana Rural Institute

Independent Living and Community Participation

Advocates and service providers frequently cite inadequate transportation as one of the major problems facing people with disabilities, especially those living in rural communities. Many approaches have been tried to address this problem. People with disabilities and community service providers frequently suggest that local faith-based organizations (FBOs) such as churches, synagogues, temples, mosques, and other organizations might be involved in improving transportation. In 2004, RTC: Rural conducted a national survey of recipients of Section 5310 Formula Grants for Special Needs of Elderly Individuals and Individuals with Disabilities. Ten percent of respondents reported being faith-based organizations, which suggests that nationally as …

Developing An Interdisciplinary Analysis And Application Of Worldview Concepts For Christian Mission, Paulo Candido De Oliveira Jan 2006

Developing An Interdisciplinary Analysis And Application Of Worldview Concepts For Christian Mission, Paulo Candido De Oliveira

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem. The Adventist emphasis on cognitive knowledge and behavioral change instead of deep changes of worldview assumptions and allegiance is the main concern of the present work. It is easier to emphasize cognitive beliefs and behavior than to do the difficult task of working to change the underlying worldview premises that drive behavior. The emphases on cognitive beliefs and behavior have frequently generated syncretism, created loyalty based on surface advantage instead of deeper allegiance, and hindered the Seventh-day Adventist Christian message from being adapted to different cultures.

Method. An interdisciplinary library research is conducted to establish the foundational knowledge of …

Stereotypical Images Of Chinese Characters In Hollywood Films, 1910--2005, Yu Chen Jan 2006

Stereotypical Images Of Chinese Characters In Hollywood Films, 1910--2005, Yu Chen

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine 20 major Hollywood films, two per decade between 1910 and 2005, to determine how Chinese characters have been portrayed and how their portrayals have changed over time. The researcher examined the nature and purpose of stereotypes as well as interracial interactions and relationships depicted between Chinese and Caucasian characters to provide insights into the balance of power depicted in the films.

Previous studies on Chinese portrayals in Hollywood films were badly out of date, since films produced after 1970 have not been included in the analyses. The present study filled the gap …

Cross-Cultural Lawyering By The Book: The Latest Clinical Texts And A Sketch Of A Future Agenda, Ascanio Piomelli Jan 2006

Cross-Cultural Lawyering By The Book: The Latest Clinical Texts And A Sketch Of A Future Agenda, Ascanio Piomelli

UC Law Journal of Race and Economic Justice

Over the past decade, the literature on lawyering has paid increased attention to the impact of cultural differences on interactions between attorneys and clients. This essay assesses the latest generation of clinical textbooks on interviewing and counseling and how they seek to prepare student-lawyers for crosscultural work. It highlights differences in these textbooks' definitions of culture, measures of crosscultural success, descriptions of the dimensions along which cultures differ, the side(s) of the lawyer-client relationship on which they focus, and the behaviors they suggest. The essay argues these texts are at their best when they define culture both broadly and fluidly, …

Neither Dead Nor Dangerous: Postmodernism And The Teaching Of Legal Writing, Adam Todd Jan 2006

Neither Dead Nor Dangerous: Postmodernism And The Teaching Of Legal Writing, Adam Todd

School of Law Faculty Publications

This article explores postmodernism and its relation to the teaching of legal writing. Postmodernism is an undeniably important theory in literary criticism, composition and rhetoric and has provoked much debate in areas of legal scholarship, but it has seldom been addressed directly by legal writing scholars.

The teaching of legal writing has been greatly affected by postmodernism and can be characterized as a postmodern class in what is otherwise a modernist academy. Legal writing teachers generally teach in a modernist paradigm which seeks to normalize the law and create unitary meaning from the morass of texts and ideas which is …

Historical Perspective On Performance Budgeting: Performance Budgeting In The United States Before 1960, Dan Williams Jan 2006

Historical Perspective On Performance Budgeting: Performance Budgeting In The United States Before 1960, Dan Williams

Publications and Research

With the assistance of A. E. Buck, Herbert Hoover coined the term Performance Budget in 1949 to rebrand cost data budgeting. Cost data budgeting originated in 1912 in Richmond County (Staten Island), New York. It is strongly associated with the National Commission on Municipal Standards and the Committee on Uniform Street Sanitation Records, which are both direct derivatives of Clarence Ridley’s original work in making sense of performance measurement under the title Means of Measuring Municipal Government, his 1927 dissertation at Syracuse University. Ridley subsequently led the International City Managers Association for nearly 30 years. He teamed with A. E. …
