Dynamic Modeling And Statistical Analysis Of Event Times, Edsel A. Pena Nov 2006

Dynamic Modeling And Statistical Analysis Of Event Times, Edsel A. Pena

Faculty Publications

This review article provides an overview of recent work in the modeling and analysis of recurrent events arising in engineering, reliability, public health, biomedicine and other areas. Recurrent event modeling possesses unique facets making it different and more difficult to handle than single event settings. For instance, the impact of an increasing number of event occurrences needs to be taken into account, the effects of covariates should be considered, potential association among the interevent times within a unit cannot be ignored, and the effects of performed interventions after each event occurrence need to be factored in. A recent general class …

Complexity Leadership Theory: An Interactive Perspective On Leading In Complex Adaptive Systems, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein, Mary Uhl-Bien, Russ Marion, Anson Seers, James Douglas Orton, Craig Schreiber Nov 2006

Complexity Leadership Theory: An Interactive Perspective On Leading In Complex Adaptive Systems, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein, Mary Uhl-Bien, Russ Marion, Anson Seers, James Douglas Orton, Craig Schreiber

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Traditional, hierarchical views of leadership are less and less useful given the complexities of our modern world. Leadership theory must transition to new perspectives that account for the complex adaptive needs of organizations. In this paper, we propose that leadership (as opposed to leaders) can be seen as a complex dynamic process that emerges in the interactive “spaces between” people and ideas. That is, leadership is a dynamic that transcends the capabilities of individuals alone; it is the product of interaction, tension, and exchange rules governing changes in perceptions and understanding. We label this a dynamic of adaptive leadership, and …

Questioning Drawing For Designers: Project Work As A Strategy And Examples From The Practice, Maria Vasconcelos, Helena Elias Nov 2006

Questioning Drawing For Designers: Project Work As A Strategy And Examples From The Practice, Maria Vasconcelos, Helena Elias

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Facing the changes of the named “global society and technological revolution”, this paper begins by equating through literature review main competences asked to designers and the way drawing as a discipline can make a contribution in the academic curricula of design courses. Such contribution is also shown by depicting some exercises of drawing and results obtained in practice. The paper considers drawing fundamental for designerly thinking and argues on the importance of project work as a methodology to give drawing a purpose, enriching and enlarging its capacity as a tool for creativity, thinking, and research, problem-solving and self expression. Drawing …

How To Develop Basic Research In Communication Design, P.K. Storkerson Nov 2006

How To Develop Basic Research In Communication Design, P.K. Storkerson

DRS Biennial Conference Series

As a matter of competence and legitimacy, Communication design needs the grounding and knowledge that come from basic research. One of the major impediments to basic research in communication design is the lack of theoretical frames by which to apprehend and isolate valid, significant research questions and define research methods. This paper explicates these problems and proposes solutions by outlining a process of defining theory and method and by proposing a specific ontological and epistemological frame within which to conduct research in communication design.

Reframing American Democracy: The Role Of Research In The Interpretation Of Redesigned Election Artefacts, E.D. Tunstall Nov 2006

Reframing American Democracy: The Role Of Research In The Interpretation Of Redesigned Election Artefacts, E.D. Tunstall

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In November 2000, a poorly designed “butterfly” ballot in Palm Beach County, Florida, of the United States of America, changed election history. From 2001-2005, Design for Democracy, a strategic program of AIGA and UPA, conducted ethnographically based research to redesigned election artifacts, including the ballot. This paper explores the role of research, particularly ethnographic research, in the interpretation of the “meaning” of these redesigned election artifacts within the discourses of American democracy. In particular, it focuses on the discourses of American democracy as framed by the contexts of American professional design organizations, international museums such as the Pompidou Center, and …

The Fluid Contemporary Interior, S Yelavich Nov 2006

The Fluid Contemporary Interior, S Yelavich

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper explores the elision of public and private realms in the interior at advent of the 21st century. “The Fluid Contemporary Interior,” covering the mid-1980s to the present, surveys the interior spaces of the house, the apartment, the loft, the office, civic spaces, religious spaces, cultural spaces, retail spaces, restaurants, hotels, and therapeutic spaces. A critical assessment of the social implications of the contemporary interior, this paper examines the fluctuations in design typologies in a globalized era. For example, hospitals are increasingly adopting the form language of spas and health clubs to allay patient's fears and to be more …

Proportional Process Conflict In Undergraduate Cooperative Learning Groups, Glenna K. Dunn Nov 2006

Proportional Process Conflict In Undergraduate Cooperative Learning Groups, Glenna K. Dunn

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The first purpose of this research was to determine if minimal training on the concepts and effects of relational, task, and process conflict would have an effect on proportional process conflict (Jehn, 2000) in undergraduate cooperative learning groups. Proportional process conflict is explained as the amount of process conflict in proportion to relational and task conflict and to the overall amount of conflict within the group. The second purpose was to increase knowledge about the cultural patterns and perspectives of undergraduate cooperative learning groups. The sample consisted of 68 undergraduate students from four classes of the same course at a …

The Jamaican Female Skills Surplus And Earnings Deficit: A Holistic Explanation, Dawn Richards Elliott Nov 2006

The Jamaican Female Skills Surplus And Earnings Deficit: A Holistic Explanation, Dawn Richards Elliott

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper addresses the poor socio-economic performance of Jamaican females despite superior human capital. A holistic explanation exploring female lifestyle choices is advanced since discipline-specific theories fail to explain occupational clustering and the resulting earnings gap. It is hypothesized that both reflect lifestyle constraints, which may be linked to characteristics of the social environment. Since these constraints affect different groups of women differently, then policies designed to reduce occupational dis-similarity and female-male earnings gap must adapt a dis-aggregated analysis. Catherine Hakim’s model of female dis-aggregation and data from the World Bank’s Living Standards Measurement Survey, LSMS, are used to advance …

Arab Women’S Education And Gender Perceptions: An Insider Analysis, Amani Hamdan Nov 2006

Arab Women’S Education And Gender Perceptions: An Insider Analysis, Amani Hamdan

Journal of International Women's Studies

Studies focusing exclusively on the connection between Arab Muslim women’s educational pursuits and their gender perceptions, and how their gender perceptions may have changed as a result of living in two different cultures, are rarely conducted. Additionally, the factors that may influence an Arab Muslim woman’s educational pursuits seem seldom investigated. This article is highlighting some factors that may influence Arab Muslim women’s gender perceptions. In researching Arab Muslim women’s experiences, I considered the diversity and multiplicity of their race, ethnicity, class, and experience. How Arab Muslim women construct the gender aspect of their identities and how these identities may …

An Analysis Of The Economic Status Of Women In Cameroon, Stella Nana-Fabu Nov 2006

An Analysis Of The Economic Status Of Women In Cameroon, Stella Nana-Fabu

Journal of International Women's Studies

The Cameroon woman has for long been the economic backbone of the nation, yet she remains largely marginalized in society generally and in the economic sector in particular. The cumulative effects of the interplay of gender discrimination of traditional African and Western colonial as well as neo-colonial systems on the general status of the Cameroon woman has been enormous. As this paper reveals, in modern times, more Cameroon women have become more dependent on men economically than in pre-colonial or traditional times.

It is true that modernization has wrought some good for Cameroon women, but this article shows that the …

“A Sea Captain In Her Own Right”: Navigating The Feminist Thought Of Huda Shaarawi, Rula B. Quawas Nov 2006

“A Sea Captain In Her Own Right”: Navigating The Feminist Thought Of Huda Shaarawi, Rula B. Quawas

Journal of International Women's Studies

Huda Shaarawi was one of the first Egyptian women who argued for women’s liberation, starting with education which would lead to full participation in the social and cultural reform and result in social usefulness and in legal and civic equality. A socialist feminist, Shaarawi promoted a successful program for social change not only from within the existing social and political order but also from within the framework of Islam and its value system. She came to be a speaking subject of feminist politics and a feminist living text for the women of her own generation. She was, and still is, …

Verbal And Visual Rhetorics Of Cancer: Defying Silence In Margaret Edson, Audre Lorde And Jo Spence’S Works, Catalina Florina Florescu Nov 2006

Verbal And Visual Rhetorics Of Cancer: Defying Silence In Margaret Edson, Audre Lorde And Jo Spence’S Works, Catalina Florina Florescu

Journal of International Women's Studies

In this essay I offer some powerful verbal and visual examples of the rhetorics of cancer in an attempt to bring to our attention the experiences and reflections of those who felt more like medical cases than persons-patients while facing and eventually dying because of cancer. My essay is a critical “travelogue” through the pain of the other, more specifically as it is presented in Margaret Edson’s play Wit (2000), Audre Lorde’s memoir The Cancer Journals (1992), and Jo Spence verbal and visual memoirs Putting Myself in the Picture: A Political, Personal, and Photographic Autobiography (1988) and Cultural Snipping: The …

Gender, Romance Novels And Plastic Sexuality In The United States: A Focus On Female College Students, Huei-Hsia Wu Nov 2006

Gender, Romance Novels And Plastic Sexuality In The United States: A Focus On Female College Students, Huei-Hsia Wu

Journal of International Women's Studies

This analysis gauges gender difference in time spent reading romance novels and sexuality. Respondents were 770 white American college students, including 436 females and 334 males, age 17–49. Males are viewed as a reference group. Drawing upon the “plastic sexuality” thesis and feminist theory, this study hypothesizes that female readers of romance novels have higher levels of interest in sexuality (at least in the attitudes) than male readers, and non-readers but such a sexual interest is not necessarily converted into a more active sexual behavior. Most romance novels promote deeply constraining patriarchal values, reading romance novels plays a role in …

Defense Transformation: To What, For What?, Kevin Reynolds Colonel Nov 2006

Defense Transformation: To What, For What?, Kevin Reynolds Colonel

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

“What form is transformation taking and what end(s) are the armed forces transforming to obtain?” The author argues that U.S. foreign and national security policies should drive the pace and direction of defense transformation, but finds that all too often the military’s weapons systems preferences determine the shape and form of the armed services transformation and their future capability sets. Due to the lengthy Research, Development, Testing, and Evaluation (RDT&E) time to acquire technologically advanced weapons systems, up to and beyond 20 years in many instances, future administrations will inherit weapons systems and force structures that, although recently fielded, were …

Why Not Regulate Private Discrimination?, Matt Zwolinski Nov 2006

Why Not Regulate Private Discrimination?, Matt Zwolinski

San Diego Law Review

In this Article I examine the disparity between attitudes toward regulating private discrimination and those concerning the regulation of what I will call "commercial" discrimination. My hope is to find a theory that can simultaneously explain these divergent attitudes by providing an account that fits the various aspects of our legal practices and our attitudes toward them, and justify those practices by providing an account that makes the divergence attractive from a moral point of view. I focus on an explanation of the disparity that is grounded in three different sorts of considerations: differences in our epistemological access to private …

Juror Questions During Trial: A Window Into Juror Thinking, Shari Seidman Diamond, Mary R. Rose, Beth Murphy, Sven Smith Nov 2006

Juror Questions During Trial: A Window Into Juror Thinking, Shari Seidman Diamond, Mary R. Rose, Beth Murphy, Sven Smith

Vanderbilt Law Review

The jury has undergone a dramatic transformation from its earliest incarnation when jurors acted as witnesses, investigators, and tribunal. In the modern American jury trial, the parties determine what jurors learn during the proceedings. Jurors of today, assigned the role of audience members until deliberations begin, typically speak in the courtroom only during jury selection and through their verdict at the end of the trial. In light of their enforced silence throughout the trial, jurors have no opportunity to clarify or check on their interpretation of the evidence and they provide few external indications about their thinking as the trial …

The Commodification Of Insurance Defense Practice, Herbert M. Kritzer Nov 2006

The Commodification Of Insurance Defense Practice, Herbert M. Kritzer

Vanderbilt Law Review

In this paper, I present an analysis of insurance defense practice using the heuristic of a commodity.7 Essentially, I argue that many, perhaps even most, insurance companies have come to view the more routine work of insurance defense as something to be purchased in a marketplace where there are a large number of interchangeable providers.8 Loyalty between buyer and seller, to the extent that it had been an important element of the relationship, has faded. Today, insurance companies frequently shop for the best deal, which may include producing insurance defense services in-house rather than purchasing those services from an outside …
