Human Rights In Cuba, Susan Kemp Jan 2006

Human Rights In Cuba, Susan Kemp

Human Rights & Human Welfare

In 1959, Fidel Castro established a Cuban socialist state closely aligned with the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union's collapse brought an end to Soviet economic support which, combined with the U.S. embargo, created an economic crisis in the early 1990s. The Cuban government's instability and desire to maintain control overrides the individual rights of its citizens. These events are the background for the lack of fundamental human rights in Cuba today.

Human Rights In El Salvador, Tait Robinson Jan 2006

Human Rights In El Salvador, Tait Robinson

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Between 1979 and 1991 El Salvador was embroiled in a civil war that claimed over 70,000 lives. Longstanding socio-economic inequality between the rich and poor led to government-backed human rights abuses dispensed by the military. These ranged from denials of freedom and civil liberties to village massacres.

Human Rights In Chile, Stephanie Raessler Jan 2006

Human Rights In Chile, Stephanie Raessler

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Chile might evoke memories of Augosto Pinochet and his brutal reign, though there is more to this country than an oppressive authoritarian regime. A history of politics longer than Pinochet's rule has shaped Chile's current situation. Many issues recur across Chilean history, and continue to influence the present.

The Embedded Entrepreneur: Recognizing The Strength Of Ethnic Social Ties, Ed Chung, Kim Whalen Jan 2006

The Embedded Entrepreneur: Recognizing The Strength Of Ethnic Social Ties, Ed Chung, Kim Whalen

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This article is premised on the idea that social networks represent an important, but often overlooked, unit of analysis in management and entrepreneurship studies. The concept of embeddedness, emphasizing the significance of social relationships, is of particular relevance as more and more frequently minorities and immigrants engage in small businessownership. This article borrows from the ethnicity and social network traditions, and offers that an analysis of the ethnic homogeneity of an entrepreneur’s strong and weak social ties would be fruitful in gauging entrepreneurial success.

Racial Profiling And The War On Terror: Changing Trends And Perspectives, Abu B. Bah Jan 2006

Racial Profiling And The War On Terror: Changing Trends And Perspectives, Abu B. Bah

Ethnic Studies Review

Minorities in the United States have often been treated unfairly by law enforcement agencies. Prior to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the United States, Blacks were the main victims of racial profiling. Since the terrorist attack, however, Arabs and Muslims are becoming the primary targets for profiling by law enforcement agencies. There are some remarkable similarities between the profiling of Blacks and the profiling of Arabs and Muslims. In both cases, the fundamental problems with racial profiling are that it violates the civil liberties of innocent people and denies minorities the equal protection of the law. The War …

The Conceptual Game In Copyright, Lior Zemer Jan 2006

The Conceptual Game In Copyright, Lior Zemer

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

This article examines the nature of copyright as a concept and discusses the benefits that can be derived from understanding copyright as a vague conceptual framework, or, alternatively as an arsenal of competing interpretations and permutations, rendering its meaning essentially contested. The best way to make meaningful progress in the way we approach and think of copyright is by admitting into our discourse on copyright alternative approaches to ownership which emphasizes the public interest. We can protect the integrity of the copyright discourse by ensuring that no single voice can exclude other voices, and allow sufficient conceptual flexibility to permit …

Frank Meyer: The Fusionist As Federalist, Publius, Jonathan H. Adler Jan 2006

Frank Meyer: The Fusionist As Federalist, Publius, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

Frank S. Meyer played a central role in defining the post-war American conservative movement. Through his writings and political activities, he defined and defended an ideological "fusion" of traditional conservative principles and libertarian political beliefs. While concerned with maintenance of an objective moral order and the pursuit of virtue in the individual, Meyer argued that the freedom of the person is the central and primary end of political society. The American system of government, with its horizontal and vertical separations of power, came closer than any political system in history to providing the protection for individual liberties necessary for the …

Is It A Prosecutor’S World?: Determinants Of Count Bargaining Decisions, Jeremy Ball Jan 2006

Is It A Prosecutor’S World?: Determinants Of Count Bargaining Decisions, Jeremy Ball

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

Scholars agree that the American prosecutor possesses a great amount of discretion (see Albonetti, 1987; Kersetter, 1990; Thomas & Fitch, 1976). Scholars also agree that such discretion has the potential to result in discrimination in the form of unwarranted disparity (Walker, Spohn, & DeLone, 2000). American prosecutors use their discretion to make initial charging decisions, to seek the death penalty, and to negotiate plea agreements.

One of the most profound and frequently studied issues in the American criminal justice system is racial discrimination. Research indicates that Black offenders are disproportionately represented in prison populations (Blumstein, Cohen, Martin, & Tonry, 1983; …

The Color Of Perspective: Affirmative Action And The Constitutional Rhetoric Of White Innocence, 11 Mich. J. Race & L. 477 (2006), Cecil J. Hunt Ii

UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship

This Article discusses the Supreme Court's use of the rhetoric of White innocence in deciding racially-inflected claims of constitutional shelter. It argues that the Court's use of this rhetoric reveals its adoption of a distinctly White-centered perspective, representing a one-sided view of racial reality that distorts the Court's ability to accurately appreciate the true nature of racial reality in contemporary America. This Article examines the Court's habit of using a White-centered perspective in constitutional race cases. Specifically, it looks at the Court's use of the rhetoric of White innocence in the context of the Court's concern with protecting "innocent" Whites …

Adapting Business Management Models In Sporting Organization: The Malaysian Experience, Mohd Salleh Aman, Abdullah Rahim Jan 2006

Adapting Business Management Models In Sporting Organization: The Malaysian Experience, Mohd Salleh Aman, Abdullah Rahim

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Most of the management literature as we know it at the beginning of the 21st century has a business or military orientation. it is decisively business-centric as most of its models were developed from European and North American (Boyacigiller & Adler, 1991; Elsbach, Sutton and Whetten, 1999). These management models it could be argued were basically designed to solve problems of industraialization in Europe and North America. These models were developed primrily to build a bridge between the larger society's government by democracy and the smaller society of the corporation or company which operates on a different system of governance …

Information Skills Programs : Implementation And Evaluation, J. Sinnasamy

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The information skills programs at academic libraries aim to produce students with competent information seeking behavior. This means that students will be aware of their needs for information, know where the information is, how to retrieve and use them effectively for learning and research. The ultimate objective is to enable students to be information literate. However, librarians work independently without much collaboration with the faculties. Library information skills programs are usually evaluated as useful by the students. How much the students use the strategies learnt in these programs for their learning and research is difficult for the librarians to gauge. …

The Moral Of The Story, Katie Beth Jones

Honors Program Theses

This thesis is written from the perspective of an elementary education major in anticipation of graduating and entering the teaching profession. Realizing the immense responsibility teachers bear for the academic and moral development of the next generation of Americans, she has researched the roles of various institutions in transmitting norms and values from one generation to the next and examined what gaps may exist in that transmission. Concerned for the future of American society, she set out to discover sources of what may be the demise of our culture and what role schools can and should have in the moral …
