The Effects Of Maternal Welfare Receipt On Children’S Development, Nikolay O. Doskov Jan 2006

The Effects Of Maternal Welfare Receipt On Children’S Development, Nikolay O. Doskov

Gettysburg Economic Review

Over the past 25 years, welfare and other public policies for families living below the poverty line have developed a primary objective of promoting parents’ self-sufficiency. The Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA), passed in 1996, was a milestone in this effort, limiting the number of years that families can receive federal cash welfare assistance and requiring most of them to participate in work-related activities to be eligible for such assistance. This new emphasis on work was one of the main reasons for the dramatic decline in welfare dependency during the late 1990s. The new legislation, however, also …

Law School Education And Liberal Cle, Jay Conison

Law Faculty Publications

In the fall of 2002, several organizations in the fields of law and legal education jointly sponsored the Second Indiana Conclave on Legal Education.1 The purpose of the meeting was to assess the status of legal education in the State of Indiana, both in law school and beyond; identify goals that could guide the improvement of legal education; and map out means to achieve those goals. Within this general framework, the Conclave emphasized issues relating to core values of the profession; more particularly, instilling and supporting them in the face of great changes in the profession and society. The Conclave …

Asymmetric Parenthood, Katharine K. Baker Jan 2006

Asymmetric Parenthood, Katharine K. Baker

All Faculty Scholarship

This analysis of the American Law Institute's Principles of Family Law, Chapter 3, examines how the Principles perceive the origins and extent of parental obligation. What is that makes someone financially responsible for a child? Perhaps surprisingly, the Drafters of this key chapter of the Principles spend remarkably little time analyzing that question. Instead, to determine who has parental obligation, the Principles rely on extant legal paternity and parenthood doctrine that is itself completely muddled. To determine the extent of parental obligation, the Principles employ a binary biological ideal of parenthood that fails to reflect reality for close to half …

Women And War: A Bibliography Of Recent Works, Annette Demers Jan 2006

Women And War: A Bibliography Of Recent Works, Annette Demers

International Journal of Legal Information

Since the end of the Cold War, a number of regional conflicts worldwide have devastated innocent populations. The conflicts in Rwanda and in the Balkans come to mind as prominent examples. With these developments the literature about women and war has proliferated.

In particular, there is a growing emphasis on the impact of war on women. The literature emphasizes a number of concerns. In most countries, women form the center of the family and bear the economic and social burden of keeping their families together throughout times of conflict and upheaval. Women's essential role in childbearing and procreation makes them …

A Bridge Between East And West: The Universities Service Centre Of The Chinese University Of Hong Kong, Duncan Alford

International Journal of Legal Information

Fragrant Harbor is the literal translation of the Chinese (pinyin Xiang Gang) for Hong Kong. Once a British colony and now a Special Administrative Region within the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong is also a global financial center. In June 2006 I had the privilege of conducting legal research as a visiting scholar at the Universities Service Centre of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. My research topic was the influence of Hong Kong banking law on banking reform in the People’s Republic of China. The following is a brief summary of my research and experience there.

Marketing Scholarship: Evolving Research Standards, Karl Boedecker, Fred W. Morgan Jan 2006

Marketing Scholarship: Evolving Research Standards, Karl Boedecker, Fred W. Morgan

Economics, Law, and International Business

Marketing academics endeavor to conduct research that contributes to the development of cutting edge theories and ideas about marketing. At the same time, they try to incorporate these research findings into their classes through the application of theories to the practice of marketing. Even so, marketing scholarship comes under intermittent attack for being arcane and irrelevant for practitioners. To explore this disconnect between theory and practice, we review the evolution of scholarly research in marketing. We identify the various definitions of scholarship that have evolved as business schools have matured. We conclude that marketing academics must make scholarly contributions, variously …

The Elections Of 2000: Politics, Culture And Economics In North America, Mary K. Kirtz, Mark J. Kasoff, Rick Farmer, John C. Green

The Elections of 2000

The essays in this collection are the product of a conversation among scholars, spanning national borders and disciplinary boundaries, about the increasing integration of Canada, Mexico, and the United States and the development of a “continental perspective.” This conversation has been underway for some time, reflecting the causes, challenges, and consequences of economic, cultural, and political integration in North America. The conjunction of national elections in all three of the great North American democracies in 2000 offered us the opportunity to deepen this conversation and engage in scholarly discourse from a “continental perspective.” Taken together, the essays in this book …

Reflections On The Death Penalty And Catholic Social Teaching, Dr. Roger C. Barnes Ph.D.

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

Catholic social teaching has a great deal to guide us on the topic of the death penalty. especially with respect to the inherent dignity of the human person. The death penalty remains a staple of the American criminal justice system.for a majority ofthefifiy slates and.federal government, hut public sentiment is becoming increasingly skeptical about its ultimate effectiveness. In thefollmrinx I revinv that part of Catholic social teaching that speaks to the death penalty and I reflect on the struggle to abolish the death penalty.

Who Do You Say That I Am?: The Jesus Question At Catholic Universities And Colleges, Dr. Glenn Ambrose Ph.D. Jan 2006

Who Do You Say That I Am?: The Jesus Question At Catholic Universities And Colleges, Dr. Glenn Ambrose Ph.D.

Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

The question concerning the identity and message of Jesus of Nazareth is fundamentally important for Catholic universities and colleges. This has always been true, but today's pluralistic and ecumenical setting presses us to think in new ways. This essay draws attention to two types of Christologies, one Fom "above" and one .fom "below, " that have been a part of the Christian tradition and examines their viability in contemporary Christian faith-based education. In conclusion. it is argued that a Christology from Below, which rejects theological claims concerning the divine identity of Jesus as a starting point in favor of beginning …
