Loyalty's Reward — A Felony Conviction: Recent Prosecutions Of High-Status Female Offenders, Michelle S. Jacobs

UF Law Faculty Publications

Between 2001 and 2004, six high-status women were charged with crimes in connection with corporate criminal cases. The public is familiar with some of them, although not all of their cases have been covered equally in the press. With the exception of an occasional article now and then mentioning the exploding rates of female incarceration, women's crime tends to be invisible to the public eye. The statistical data the government collects and analyzes on women and crime will be discussed. This article will focus on the prosecution of the individual cases of Lea Fastow, Betty Vinson, and Martha Stewart. Their …

Regulation And Freedom In Global Business Education, Stefano Harney, Cliff Oswick Mar 2006

Regulation And Freedom In Global Business Education, Stefano Harney, Cliff Oswick

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Purpose: This paper seeks to confront the orthodoxy of global business education with some insights from postcolonial theory in order to develop a new critical pedagogy adequate for a global sociology of management and accounting. Design/methodology/approach: Reviewing the state of play in postcolonial theory and noting the new politicisation in that field, the paper asks what relevance this politicisation might have for an alternative to orthodox global business education. Findings: The paper finds that the texts available to postcolonial theory present a wealth beyond the regulation of colonial and neo‐colonial regimes and in contrast critical management studies do not have …

Beyond That “It's Just A Flesh Wound...” Kind Of Feeling: A Medieval Game1 Proposal, Carol Robinson Mar 2006

Beyond That “It's Just A Flesh Wound...” Kind Of Feeling: A Medieval Game1 Proposal, Carol Robinson

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

In his book, What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy, James Paul Gee argues that “the power of video games, for good or ill, resides in the ways in which they meld learning and identity…,” and he cautions that this power can be used to miscommunicate wrong ideology (such as might be found in a neo-Nazi game that encourages the player to conduct ethnic cleansing (199). However, Gee advocates “understanding the ‘play’ of identities and perspectives as they work for and against each other in the world, now and throughout history” (200). The art – …

School Performance: Australian State/Territory Comparisons Of Student Achievements In National And International Studies, Ken Rowe Mar 2006

School Performance: Australian State/Territory Comparisons Of Student Achievements In National And International Studies, Ken Rowe

Student learning processes

Policy activities related to outcomes and standards-based educational performance indicators and their links with growing demands for accountability, standards monitoring, benchmarking, school effectiveness and reform are widespread and well established in many countries throughout the world. While the long-term goals of school education may be expressed as the enhancement of young peoples’ access to and participation in society, as well as preparation for meeting the constantly changing demands of the modern workplace, the most direct and readily accessible measures of student and school performance are obtained from assessments of students’ academic achievements. Despite several limitations, achievement data obtained from both …

Incidence Of Four-Generation Family Lineages: Is Timing Of Fertility Or Mortality A Better Explanation?, Sarah H. Matthews, Rongjun Sun

Sociology & Criminology Faculty Publications

Objectives. This article estimates the percentage of lineages that include four or more generations for a sample of the U.S. population and explores how social status and race are related to lineage depth.

Methods. We assembled data from Waves 1 and 2 of the National Survey of Families and Households in order to estimate the proportion of adults in four or more generations for the Wave 2 sample (1992-1994). When necessary, we used various decision rules to overcome an absence of information about specific generations. We examine relationships between lineage depth and sociodemographic variables by using logistic regressions.

Results. The …

Estimating Heterogeneous Production In Fisheries, Kurt E. Schnier, Christopher M. Anderson, William C. Horrace Mar 2006

Estimating Heterogeneous Production In Fisheries, Kurt E. Schnier, Christopher M. Anderson, William C. Horrace

Economics - All Scholarship

Stochastic production frontier models are used extensively in the agricultural and resource economics literature to estimate production functions and technical efficiency, as well as to guide policy. Traditionally these models assume that each agent’s production can be specified as a representative, homogeneous function. This paper proposes the synthesis of a latent class regression and an agricultural production frontier model to estimate technical efficiency while allowing for the possibility of production heterogeneity. We use this model to estimate a latent class production function and efficiency measures for vessels in the Northeast Atlantic herring fishery. Our results suggest that traditional measures of …

Review Of Fathers Under Fire: The Revolution In Child Support Enforcement, By Irwin Garfinkel, Sara S. Mclanahan, Daniel R. Meyer, And Judith A. Seltzer, Ryan E. Spohn Mar 2006

Review Of Fathers Under Fire: The Revolution In Child Support Enforcement, By Irwin Garfinkel, Sara S. Mclanahan, Daniel R. Meyer, And Judith A. Seltzer, Ryan E. Spohn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The title of this book adequately reflects its timely focus on nonresidential fathers facing increased child support enforcement, examining how child support contributions (or failure to meet child support obligations) affect the lives of children as well as the fathers themselves. As the authors suggest, nonresident fathers have generally been treated as financial resources, with little attention paid to their rights as parents or their needs as providers for their children. A particular focus of this collection of studies is the role of indigent nonresident fathers and their role as parents and providers. Consequently, the scope of study adopted by …

“Waltzing With The Monster,” Interventions With The Substance-Abusing Adolescent For Pastors, Treatment Providers, And Family, Philip A. Watkins

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The biblical story of the "Prodigal Son" is a universal experience made significantly more precarious by the use of mind altering chemicals. A review of the literature reveals that approximately half of all problems impacting American families are caused or exacerbated by the abuse of alcohol or other drugs. This project's focus is the impact of substance abuse on the developing adolescent. Chemical "hijacking" of the brain's pleasure centers and resultant dysfunction is examined. Primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention are discussed. Interventions which facilitate the young person's "homecoming" and implications for the community of faith are integrated.

Corporate Governance In The Era Of Sarbanes-Oxley: Regulation, Governance, And Performance, Larry W. Ettner Mar 2006

Corporate Governance In The Era Of Sarbanes-Oxley: Regulation, Governance, And Performance, Larry W. Ettner

Student Scholarship

The results of governance research are mixed concerning the financial consequences of externally induced regulations. The debate hinges on the assumption that adoption of regulation is an exogenous factor in determining performance. Drawing on basic insights from institutional theory and innovation studies, I argue that response to regulation is in fact a mediator of the relationship between 'quality of governance' and financial performance. Focusing on the adoption of Sarbanes-Oxley (Sarbox) regulation by publicly traded companies, I hypothesize that governance quality is likely to affect financial success by influencing organizational responses to Sarbox. Using multiple year data from two large datasets, …

Making Social Studies Meaningful For Ell Students: Content And Pedagogy In Mainstream Secondary School Classrooms, Michelle Yvonne Szpara, Iftikhar Ahmad

Essays in Education

Content-area instruction for English language learners (ELL) represents a growing area of instructional need in high schools across the United States. This article focuses on the challenges and successes in developing an effective instructional environment for teaching secondary-level social studies curriculum to a sheltered population of ELLs. In the present study, grant funding was provided for a schooluniversity partnership to support content-area teachers’ efforts to increase ELL students’ comprehension skills. The authors of this paper propose a multi-tiered approach to meeting the needs of English language learners in the mainstream social studies classroom – providing social and cultural supports during …

Teacher Behaviors And Adolescent Girls Who Are At-Risk, Sheri L. Anderson, Suad Sakalli Gumus, Ben Edmonds

Essays in Education

This study inquired into the effects of teacher behaviors on the academic and social performance of incarcerated juvenile adolescent girls prior to their incarceration. Data were collected from 12 adolescent girls who participated in at least two (no more than three) individual interviews. Qualitative data analysis identified five overarching themes which revealed that some teachers are negatively influencing the academic and social adolescent girls who are at risk for school failure and juvenile delinquency. Implications and contributions of the study’s findings are discussed.

Brain Drain Or Brain Gain? The Revitalization Of A Slow Death, Chi Hong Nguyen Mar 2006

Brain Drain Or Brain Gain? The Revitalization Of A Slow Death, Chi Hong Nguyen

Essays in Education

For decades, “brain drain” which has been thought to be a disaster worldwide has influenced the socio-economic aspects in many countries under globalization forces. Presented in a narrative approach, the first parts of this paper introduce an overall view of globalization effects on international higher education and the diaporas of intellectual migrants causing brain drain. The next section of the article critically recommends appropriate measures used by many governments to minimize its negative consequences and to inverse them into beneficial brain. Brain drain, as the paper argues, may not always turn to be the dead end for any countries, but …

The History Of Reynard The Fox: How Medieval Literature Reflects Culture, Anne Lair Mar 2006

The History Of Reynard The Fox: How Medieval Literature Reflects Culture, Anne Lair

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Teaching about the Middle Ages in French culture or literature courses is always an enlightening experience to me because of the richness of symbols, events, and starting points occurring during this time period. Very often, when thinking about the Middle Ages, Christianity, chivalry, and nobility come to mind, all values still of high importance in contemporary Western societies. However, medieval culture presents itself with an array of other behaviors and values, some of which may today be considered as offensive and even sometimes “alienating”: primitive, barbaric, or even animalistic forms of behavior.

Us-American Comparative Literature And The Study Of East-Central European Culture And Literature, Letitia Guran

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her paper, "US-American Comparative Literature and the Study of East-Central European Culture and Literature," Letitia Guran begins with a short overview of the state of the discipline of comparative literature based on the ACLA Report 2003 (ACLA: American Comparative Literature Assiociation) by Haun Saussy and its responses in order to focus on a recent comparative project of large dimensions, the ICLA: International Comparative Literature Association project History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central Europe, organized and its volumes edited by Marcel Cornis Pope and John Neubauer. The thesis of Guran's paper is that there are many alternatives to the …
