Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The process of teaching and learning on post-graduate courses should cover the ability to stimulate the academic environment through research and investigation, encouraging teachers and students to take a constructive attitude that challenges academic-scientific productivity. For scientific ability and the maturity of built knowledge to take place, the incentive to undertake research is fundamental, as is the corresponding mastery of electronic instrumentation and technologies. In this sense, the Library Service of the São Carlos School of Engineering of São Paulo University, in partnership with the Department of Mechanical Engineering has offered formal and specific training since 1995, within the User …

Internalized Shame As A Moderating Variable For Inhibited Sexual Difficulties In Adult Women Resulting From Childhood Sexual Abuse, Kristine Robinson May 2006

Internalized Shame As A Moderating Variable For Inhibited Sexual Difficulties In Adult Women Resulting From Childhood Sexual Abuse, Kristine Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

An adult female sample of childhood sexual abuse survivors (N=467) were surveyed to determine whether internalized shame moderated the effects of sexual inhibited difficulties. Other variables such as severity, duration, and frequency of sexual abuse, as well as whether physical abuse was also part of their experience, were examined to determine their role in later sexual inhibition. It was predicted that there would be a significant positive relationship between 1) Scores on variables of physical abuse, severity of abuse, frequency of abuse, duration of abuse, identity of the perpetrator and scores on the variable of inhibited sexual difficulties; 2) Scores …

Nanticoke, Pennsylvania: Impacts Of The Anthracite Coal Industry: A Case Study, Amber Elias May 2006

Nanticoke, Pennsylvania: Impacts Of The Anthracite Coal Industry: A Case Study, Amber Elias

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The story of Nanticoke, Pennsylvania from 1747 to 2006 is at the same time a look into the economic, political, and social aspects of America. From the birth of the American Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century, Nanticoke played an important role in the economic health of the country. Profits from capital investment brought great wealth to the elite of the Wyoming Valley and financiers in New York and Philadelphia. The use of immigrant labor to maintain labor costs would presage corporate use of other groups. With the change in technology and the movement of capital elsewhere, Nanticoke faced the …

Racial Differences In The Gender Gap, Christy Duffel May 2006

Racial Differences In The Gender Gap, Christy Duffel

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The gender gap is a political phenomenon that has been observed in the electorate since the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, with women being more Democratic and liberal than men. Many studies have examined its existence among the white public, but little has been done to document its presence among blacks. This study examines the gender gap among whites and blacks and compares the results in order to see if there is a gender gap that exists among blacks and if it is similar to that for whites. Bivariate and multivariate analyses conducted for both blacks and whites find …

The Direct And Interactive Effects Of Neighborhood Risk And Harsh Parenting On Childhood Externalizing And Internalizing Behavior, Kristin Callahan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated the direct and interactional effects of neighborhood disadvantage and harsh parenting on concurrent assessments and change in externalizing and internalizing behavior in toddlerhood. The study included 55 mothers and their children; families completed in-home assessments when children were 2 and 3 years of age. Mothers' reports were used to measure neighborhood disadvantage and children's problem behaviors. Observer ratings derived from a clean up task were used to measure harsh parenting. Four hierarchical regression equations were computed to test each study hypothesis. Results indicated marginally significant effects of harsh parenting on externalizing problems at age 2. Surprisingly, …

Thirty Years Of Change: How Subdivisions On Stilts Have Altered A Southeast Louisiana Parish's Coast, Landscape And People, Kimberly Solet

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In thirty years, the number of second homes for recreation fishers in coastal Terrebonne Parish has grown from 244 in the late 1970s to an estimated 2,500 in 2005. This thesis considers the ramifications of the tourism boom along the parish's historically isolated and undeveloped coastline. Four coastal communities are examined: (1) Montegut, Pointe-aux-Chenes and Isle de Jean Charles; (2) Cocodrie and Chauvin; (3) Dulac; and (4) Dularge and Theriot. The research question is twofold: Why has coastal tourism been allowed to develop in the fragile wetlands that protect residents from dangerous storms?; and What does tourism development mean for …

The Relationship Of Supervisors' Attachment Styles To Their Perceptions Of Self-Efficacy In Providing Corrective Feedback And To The Working Alliance In Counselor Education, Matthew Day

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Supervisors are largely responsible for the structuring of supervision in counseling, which is influenced by various factors pertaining to a supervisor, all of which greatly affect the development of the counselor trainee. This study was designed to explore the factors of attachment styles, self-efficacy for giving corrective feedback and the dimensions of the working alliance. The results will ultimately inform counselor educators and supervisors about the practice of supervision and the implications of supervisors’ attachment styles in counselor supervision.

Exploration Of The Socialization Process Of Female Leaders In Counselor Education, Lea Randle Flowers May 2006

Exploration Of The Socialization Process Of Female Leaders In Counselor Education, Lea Randle Flowers

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Higher education literature, has several contributions that pertain to mentoring styles in academia, female faculty, gender and leadership, and recruitment and retention of women and minorities in academia. However, specific references that lend voice to the experiences of female counselor educators in the context of their career paths and patterns are scant(Hill, Leinbaugh, Bradley,& Hazler, 2005). This qualitative investigation explored the socialization process of 8 female leaders in counselor education from throughout the United States utilizing grounded theory methods. The primary theme of socialization was organized into three main categories, (a) childhood socialization, (b) anticipatory socialization (Van Mannen, 1976), and …

The Efficacy Of Peer Review In Improving E.S.L. Students' Online Writing, Kathryn Fiddler Butcher

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This mixed method study investigated the development of E.S.L. writers' skills in revision when scaffolded by peer reviewers, with Lev Vygotsky's social-interactionist theory as the framework. Repeated-measures ANCOVA analyzed scores of four essay projects (first drafts and revisions) evaluated by blind holistic readings with a pretest score as covariant. Participants came from existing sections at a state university in the South in which the instruction was the same. The experimental group wrote revisions based on peer feedback; the control group received instructor feedback. Qualitative data came from semi-structured interviews with participants. Neither group showed significant improvement (at .05) in revising. …

Mugshot Exposure Effects: Retroactive Interference, Mugshot Commitment, Source Confusion, And Unconscious Transference, Kenneth A. Deffenbacher, Brian H. Bornstein, Steven D. Penrod

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

More than 25 years of research has accumulated concerning the possible biasing effects of mugshot exposure to eyewitnesses. Two separate metaanalyses were conducted on 32 independent tests of the hypothesis that prior mugshot exposure decreases witness accuracy at a subsequent lineup. Mugshot exposure both significantly decreased proportion correct and increased the false alarm rate, the effect being greater on false alarms. A mugshot commitment effect, arising from the identification of someone in a mugshot, was a substantial moderator of both these effects. Simple retroactive interference, where the target person is not included among mugshots and no one in a mugshot …
