Beliefs About Parenting And How It Affects A Child's Education, Korin Crandall Quinn

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The researcher studied the cultural trends of a group of at-risk mothers who reside within Kent County, the majority of whom live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The null hypothesis states: Environmental and cultural beliefs do not affect generational parenting beliefs or risk factors within the Kent County and Grand Rapids area. Cultural factors and four areas of the mothers’ lives were studied: (a) number of parents within the household, (b) parental levels of education, (c) socioeconomic status, and (d) occurrence ratio of low birth weight.

Mothers (n=37) responded to questionnaires; 24 were interviewed in person; 13 completed questionnaire forms on …

No. 17: International Migration And Good Governance In The Southern African Region, Jonathan Crush, Sally Peberdy, Vincent Williams

Southern African Migration Programme

Southern Africa has a long history of intra-regional migration, dating back to the mid-nineteenth century. Migration was probably the single most important factor tying together all of the various colonies and countries of the sub-continent into a single regional labour market during the twentieth century. However, entrenched patterns of migration have undergone major restructuring in the last two decades. Southern Africa is now a region on the move (McDonald 2000). Several broader changes underly this shift towards greater and greater intra-regional mobility.

First, the end of apartheid, a system designed to control movement and exclude outsiders, produced new opportunities for …

Are Intensive Family Preservation Services Useful?: A Study In The United Kingdom, Marian Brandon, Jo Connolly Jan 2006

Are Intensive Family Preservation Services Useful?: A Study In The United Kingdom, Marian Brandon, Jo Connolly

Journal of Family Strengths

This evaluation of the first year of an Intensive Family Preservation Service in England is based on the analysis of eighty-six families: fifty-seven families who received the service and a comparison group of twenty-nine families who did not. The study considered whether the program was fulfilling its objectives of reducing the number of children and young people in the public care system; offering a safe, supportive service for children who need protection; integrating the program into family support services as a whole, and improving family functioning. The findings were complex to interpret. Child protection was improved but there was not …

Parents Too Can Evaluate Family Preservation Services - Or –Involving Parents In Evaluation Of Family Preservation Services, Anthony N. Maluccio

Journal of Family Strengths

In line with the long-standing emphasis in the human services on involving clients in program evaluation, in this essay I focus on principles and strategies for involving parents in evaluation of family preservation services. In particular, I delineate the crucial roles that parents can play as partners in the helping process within a family-centered context.

Promoting Family Continuity - Perspectives From Italy, Anthony N. Maluccio Jan 2006

Promoting Family Continuity - Perspectives From Italy, Anthony N. Maluccio

Journal of Family Strengths

In this essay I review a recent research study from Italy, “Le Radici nel Futuro – La Continuita’ della Relazione Genitoriale oltre la Crisi Familiare,” edited by Paola Dallanegra (2005). The contributors focus on “Spazio Neutro,” a multi-purpose child welfare agency in southern Italy that facilitates parent-child visiting and relationships between children placed in out-of-home care and their families. They delineate and illustrate, through comments from family members, selected principles and strategies for maintaining such continuity throughout the out-of-home placement.

Leadership Styles And Philosophies Of Women University Presidents, Susan R. Madsen Jan 2006

Leadership Styles And Philosophies Of Women University Presidents, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Although progress has been made, it remains clear that women are still underrepresented in administrative positions in all types of higher educational institutions throughout the world. While the issue is often now addressed in the literature, there are still few articles reporting research findings on the experiences and perceptions of university presidents, particularly women. Ten women university presidents were interviewed using the phenomenological research methodology. This paper reports the results of this research related to the presidents' perceptions of their own leadership styles and philosophies.

Continuing Confusion -Are Managers And Leaders Different?, David Curtis

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Social Worker Qualifies As A Criminal Justice Expert For The Purposes Of Classifying A Sex Offender As A Sexually Violent Predator: Commonwealth V. Conklin, Jarrod T. Takah

Duquesne Law Review

To carry its burden of proving that a sex offender is a sexually violent predator, the Commonwealth need not provide a clinical diagnosis by a licensed psychiatrist or psychologist; the opinion of a qualified criminal justice expert suffices.

Commonwealth v. Conklin, 897 A.2d 1168 (Pa. 2006).

The Depth And Breadth Of Google Scholar: An Empirical Study, Chris F. Neuhaus, Ellen E. Neuhaus, Clint Wrede, Alan Asher

Library Faculty/Staff Publications

The introduction of Google Scholar in November 2004 was accompanied by fanfare, skepticism, and numerous questions about the scope and coverage of this database. Nearly one year after its inception, many of these questions remain unanswered. This study compares the contents of 47 different databases with that of Google Scholar. Included in this investigation are tests for Google Scholar publication date and publication language bias, as well as a study of upload frequency. Tests show Google Scholar’s current strengths to be coverage of science and medical databases, open access databases, and single publisher databases. Current weaknesses include lack of coverage …
