Responding To Katrina: A Mental Health Guide To Providing Culturally Competent Mental Health Services To Evacuees And Their Support Systems, Leon D. Caldwell

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

There is no doubt that the devastation levied by hurricane Katrina is unprecedented in the lifetime of a vast majority of Americans’. The loss and damage to property is no comparison to the loss of human life and the damage to the human spirit experienced by the victims of hurricane Katrina Many mental health practitioners will heed the call to volunteer their expertise and time to assist victims and evacuees through the Red Cross and other organizations. The purpose of this abbreviated guide is to assist those practitioners with limited experiences with African American and economically disadvantaged clients and consumers …

Viewpoint And Orientation Influence Picture Recognition In The Blind, Morton A. Heller, John M. Kennedy, Ashley Clark, Melissa Mccarthy, Amber Borgert, Lindsay Wemple, Erin Fulkerson, Nicole Kaffel, Amy Duncan, Tara Riddle

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

In the first three experiments, subjects felt solid geometrical forms and matched raised-line pictures to the objects. Performance was best in experiment 1 for top views, with shorter response latencies than for side views, front views, or 3-D views with foreshortening. In a second experiment with blind participants, matching accuracy was not significantly affected by prior visual experience, but speed advantages were found for top views, with 3-D views also yielding better matching accuracy than side views. There were no performance advantages for pictures of objects with a constant cross section in the vertical axis. The early-blind participants had lower …

Community: Culture And Function In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church Community, April Evans Jan 2006

Community: Culture And Function In The Seventh-Day Adventist Church Community, April Evans

Capstone Research Projects

Thi s study looks specifically a t the purpos e and function of religious communities in order to analyze the Seventh-day Adventist community as a system and communitarian organism that creates and sustains moral codes and social controls, which thereby is symbiotic with certain identity expressions/formations. My discussion takes place in a rapidly changing broader society of high mobility, internet connectivity, and cultural change. Within the larger global community exists an American community, and within, but also overreaching that community exists a Seventh-day Adventist community that is global. These communities interact with each other, crossing membership boundaries. Within the Seventh-day …
