Creativity Needed In Non-Profits?, Wee Liang Tan Dec 2006

Creativity Needed In Non-Profits?, Wee Liang Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Creativity is something that one might not associate with the social service sector. In fact, one might consider creativity something quite distant from the non-profit sector. "We in the social service sector have more important things to do - we serve our clients and beneficiaries; we don't have the time to fool around with fancy new ideas or projects." Yet such sentiments could be no further from the truth.

Critical Race Realism: Towards An Integrative Model Of Critical Race Theory, Empirical Social Science, And Public Policy, Gregory S. Parks Nov 2006

Critical Race Realism: Towards An Integrative Model Of Critical Race Theory, Empirical Social Science, And Public Policy, Gregory S. Parks

ExpressO

Critical Race Theory was founded as “a race-based, systematic critique of legal reasoning and legal institutions….” Critics argue that it struggles to define its substantive mission, methodological commitments, and connection to the world outside of academia. This article attempts to provide a specific methodology—empirical social science—that is consistent with Critical Race Theory’s overarching mission and that has both applied and academic components. This methodology should ultimately 1) expose racism where it may be found, 2) identify its effects on individuals and institutions, and 3) put forth a concerted attack against it, in part, via public policy arguments. This concept, Critical …

A Construction Of Twelve Lifelong Learners’ Perspectives: An In-Depth, Naturalistic Study Of Self-Integration Of Learning, Marvin L. Hunt Nov 2006

A Construction Of Twelve Lifelong Learners’ Perspectives: An In-Depth, Naturalistic Study Of Self-Integration Of Learning, Marvin L. Hunt

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This research focuses on understanding people who have chosen to learn throughout their lives. A broad question guided this investigation: What is the rich, lived, lifelong learning experience from the individual’s perspective? This question allowed each participant freedom to explore and define issues he/she considered important relative to lifelong learning. Twelve lifelong learners from a wide range of backgrounds, ages, and experience were serially selected using maximum variation sampling. Most qualitative research uses a priori questions aimed at a specific topic, limiting participants’ discussion. In this study, however, grand tour questions prompted each participant to offer information about lifelong learning …

Tradeoffs In Formulating A Consistent National Policy On Adoption, Mary Eschelbach Hansen, Daniel Pollack Nov 2006

Tradeoffs In Formulating A Consistent National Policy On Adoption, Mary Eschelbach Hansen, Daniel Pollack

ExpressO

Just as the courts must consider the tradeoff between the best interest of the child and parental rights in involuntary termination of parental rights, policy on international adoption must consider the tradeoffs between the best interest of the child and the long-term interests of the nation. We argue that countries that suspend international adoptions do not maximize social welfare. A consistent national policy to maximize the well-being of the children and society at large would be to devote resources today to the oversight of international adoption in accord with child protections under the Hague Convention, while at the same time …

Expanding Roles: Paraeducators Providing Health Care To Students In Elementary Schools, Sharon Nelson Nov 2006

Expanding Roles: Paraeducators Providing Health Care To Students In Elementary Schools, Sharon Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Approximately ten to thirty percent of school aged children have a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional condition that requires specialized health care and related services. Providing the needed health care is critical in maintaining students' participation and success in school. The enactment of PL 94-142, in 1975, mandated that public schools give children with disabilities the right to a "free and appropriate public education" in the least restrictive environment possible. School nurses are the logical choice to provide the necessary health care in schools. They have the knowledge, expertise, judgement and critical thinking skills inherent in nursing education and …

Adolescent Mothers: Youth In Need Of Developmentally Appropriate Services, Patricia Arlyne Zimmerman Nov 2006

Adolescent Mothers: Youth In Need Of Developmentally Appropriate Services, Patricia Arlyne Zimmerman

Dissertations and Theses

This research examines the childhood abuse and maltreatment experiences of adolescent mothers (age 14 to 17) to investigate if these experiences have hindered their socioemotional development and consequently, their parenting behaviors and attitudes. Data were gathered using four standardized self-report instruments: the Child Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC), the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory-Youth Version (EQi-YV), and the Adult Adolescent Parenting Inventory (AAPI-2). Two additional questionnaires were developed to gather demographic and social service information to add to the knowledge base of the field, and to examine what (if any) developmentally focused services young mothers may …
