Social Work Dissertations - Archive
To help understand why women are at greater risk for developing posttraumatic stress disorder than men, this dissertation qualitatively explores a conceptual model that incorporates key components of Cognitive-Behavioral theories within the context of social experiences specific to the respective genders. Specifically, this study uses a grounded theory method to explore gender differences in relation to the cognitive factors (a) appraisal of trauma and (b) appraisal of actions during event as well as the social factors (a) social roles and (b) perception of societal expectations of 28 violent crime survivors purposefully selected to ensure similarity in type of crime, ethnicity, …

This article briefly examines the historical and cultural context of Norwegian ecological consciousness and demonstrates the viability of integrating its Deep Ecological awareness into social work curriculum and education for practice. It shall address the most salient and practical elements that Norwegian views of nature and conceptualizations of Deep Ecology have brought to global, environmental activism and emerging conceptualization of earth-based awareness. It is designed to assist educators in helping their students to become more fully cognizant that individual well-being and relationships with human and other-than-human beings is deeply influenced by internalized experiences of the natural world.

Estimating Heterogeneous Production In Fisheries, Kurt E. Schnier, Christopher M. Anderson, William C. Horrace
Economics - All Scholarship
Stochastic production frontier models are used extensively in the agricultural and resource economics literature to estimate production functions and technical efficiency, as well as to guide policy. Traditionally these models assume that each agent’s production can be specified as a representative, homogeneous function. This paper proposes the synthesis of a latent class regression and an agricultural production frontier model to estimate technical efficiency while allowing for the possibility of production heterogeneity. We use this model to estimate a latent class production function and efficiency measures for vessels in the Northeast Atlantic herring fishery. Our results suggest that traditional measures of …

This article focuses on growth-promoting aspects in the environment, and the authors propose a strength-based, dynamic model of person-environment interaction. The authors begin by briefly discussing the typical recognition of contextual variables in models that rely on the concept of person-environment fit. This is followed by a review of recent approaches to incorporating positive environmental factors in conceptualizations of human functioning. These approaches lead to an alternative model of person-environment interaction in which the engagement construct (i.e., the quality of a person-environment relationship determined by the extent to which negotiation, participation, and evaluation processes occur during the interaction) replaces the …
