Mormonism In Samoa: Cultural Dialogues, Jessica Goman
Mormonism In Samoa: Cultural Dialogues, Jessica Goman
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The following study delves into the contemporary presence of the Mormon Church in Samoa. Several informants were interviewed to uncover the perceptions of both Mormons and non-Mormons alike, as to why the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has had such success in Samoa and what that means for the people here. More specifically, informants were asked to discuss where they saw the Latter-day Saints coming into conversation with Samoan culture and then how they saw this process happening. The result is a look into how Mormons, both Samoan and American see their presence in Samoa in contrast with …

Prophecy And Porneia In Shenoute's Letters: The Rhetoric Of Sexuality In A Late Antique Egyptian Monastery, Caroline T. Schroeder
Prophecy And Porneia In Shenoute's Letters: The Rhetoric Of Sexuality In A Late Antique Egyptian Monastery, Caroline T. Schroeder
College of the Pacific Faculty Articles
The writer examines the apparently ubiquitous sexual references in the first surviving letters of Shenoute. Shenoute's references to sexuality constitute one aspect of his self-representation as his community's prophet. His textual performance as a prophet in these texts indicates that his sexual rhetoric served not only to condemn sexual activity among ascetics but also to help construct a relationship between God and the monastic community that is based on the relationship between God and the people in the Christian Old Testament. The sins of the monastery, as understood by Shenoute, like those of Israel or the nations in the prophetic …

Portraying The Quest For Buddhist Wisdom?: A Comparative Study Of The Matrix And Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Geoff Baker
Portraying The Quest For Buddhist Wisdom?: A Comparative Study Of The Matrix And Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Geoff Baker
Journal of Religion & Film
This paper analyses the way in which the quest for Buddhist wisdom has been portrayed in The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Both films seek to explore the notion of hidden realities and both suggest that selflessness can enable the individual to overcome the material world. Furthermore, it is argued that the Buddhist concept of skillful means is not only employed by advanced practitioners in each of the films to ensure that central characters are on the path to true wisdom, but also that through careful cinematic manipulation the directors prompt the audience to question their own notions …

Pascal’S Wager: A Good Bet For Personal Evangelism, Charles H. Reilly
Pascal’S Wager: A Good Bet For Personal Evangelism, Charles H. Reilly
Journal of the American Society for Church Growth
Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), a French scientist and mathematician, argued that it is advantageous to believe in or to “bet on” God because the rewards for doing so are at least as great as the rewards for not believing in God, regardless of whether or not God exists. His decision theoretic argument is commonly referred to as Pascal’s Wager. It is unlikely that everyone has the same estimates of the rewards for believing in God or for not believing in God that Pascal had. Consequently, a series of five questions, based on Pascal’s Wager, is suggested here for personalizing Pascal’s Wager. …
Law, Humanities And Equipoise In The Ethics Education Of Physician Assistants, Frederick Adolf Paola
Law, Humanities And Equipoise In The Ethics Education Of Physician Assistants, Frederick Adolf Paola
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
The humanities have been defined as a group of academic subjects united by a commitment to studying aspects of the human condition and a qualitative approach that generally prevents a single paradigm from coming to define any discipline. In the medical humanities context, the most quickly growing area is the field of literature and medicine. The use of literature in bioethics education plays a number of well-recognized educational roles. Herein, we argue that the law is relatively overemphasized in bioethics education and that one heretofore ignored yet important role of the humanities is to serve as a counterbalance to the …
