Psychotherapy For Schizophrenia In The Year 2030: Prognosis And Prognostication, William D. Spaulding, Ben C. Nolting Jan 2006

Psychotherapy For Schizophrenia In The Year 2030: Prognosis And Prognostication, William D. Spaulding, Ben C. Nolting

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

A number of psychotherapy techniques have been developed that, to varying degrees, have empirical support demonstrating favorable effects in the treatment of schizophrenia (or serious mental illness [SMI]). These techniques, and the research, vary with respect to theoretical origins, format, treatment targets, and expected outcome. A historical perspective informs understanding of this proliferation. One landmark in psychotherapy research was the recognition of common factors: different therapies embody common therapeutic factors not central to any one school. Importantly, insights about common factors reflected a better theoretical understanding of the psychotherapy process and led to the translation of learning and conditioning theories …

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Substance Use Disorders: Prevalence And Treatment Outcomes, Carole J. Huddleston

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Attempts to improve substance use disorder (SUDs) treatment outcomes have been made by identifying subgroups of clients with psychoactive comorbidities and tailoring treatment approaches accordingly. This study sought to determine the prevalence of Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among admittees to a 28-day, residential program. It was hypothesized that ADHD screening and assessment would result in a higher prevalence rate when compared to the clinical record. It was further hypothesized that clients with ADHD would have higher, earlier unsuccessful terminations and higher overall unsuccessful terminations than non-ADHD clients. The differences in the prevalence rates (3.44% clinical record and 43.68% study psychologist) …

Leadership And Job Satisfaction, Stephanie Brooke Jan 2006

Leadership And Job Satisfaction, Stephanie Brooke

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

The objective of this research is to understand the impact of leadership style on employee job satisfaction in an effort to improve leader-employee relations in nonprofit child care settings. Since turnover rates, separation costs, vacancy costs, and training costs are high in child care centers (Vickers, 2002), providing strategies for increasing job satisfaction will lead to a more stable environment for children and their families, promote positive leader member relations, and strengthen the organizational climate. Since leadership style can critically influence employee satisfaction, this study is of significant importance in promoting social change. Specifically, it focuses on a unique industry, …

This monograph presents the results of secondary analysis of the RSA-911 database from the Rehabilitation Services Administration. All successful VR closures for individuals with mental retardation, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy for six data points between 1985 and 1998 were investigated. Trends in competitive labor market and extended employment (sheltered workshops) closures were examined. The use of supported employment in the VR system and its outcomes were also discussed. The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Health Promoting Behaviors, Illness Severity, Mental Health, And Perceived Quality Of Life In Multiple Sclerosis Patients, Anna Finn

Modern Psychological Studies

Multiple sclerosis is an incurable, debilitating, nervous system disease, which causes are largely unknown, and which affects hundreds of thousands of people across the United States. Early research suggests the impact that psychological factors can have on a patient's physical and mental health status. Self-efficacy, the belief in one's ability to cope with a situation, has been found to offer beneficial and protective effects in patients suffering from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, sickle cell disease, and fibromylagia. This comprehensive literature review sought to look at psychological research that has considered the relationship between self-efficacy and health promoting behaviors, symptom …

Stature And Criminal Behavior, Rebecca J. Fish Jan 2006

Stature And Criminal Behavior, Rebecca J. Fish

Theses and Dissertations

Minorities are significantly overrepresented in America's prison population, and many studies have been conducted to determine possible causes for such a disparity. Few of these studies, however, have examined small stature as a potential contributor to criminal behavior. This study examines the relationship between criminal behavior and stature among American males. The heights, weights, stature scores (a function of the product of height and weight) and the body mass indices of criminals are examined as a whole, as well as by subgroup based on race, locality, and nature of the crime committed. The average weight of the male criminal population …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This inquiry investigated supports and barriers experienced by students with learning disabilities as they transitioned to, and persisted in, a four-year liberal arts college setting. The goal of the inquiry was twofold: first, to understand from the perspective of the students themselves, the experience of being in and working through the postsecondary environment, especially what facilitates and what obstructs continued participation; and second, to extrapolate from these data, recommendations to inform postsecondary programming for students with learning disabilities.;Over a 3 year period, two cohorts of students with learning disabilities, transition and persistence phase students, volunteered to participate in semi-structured face-to-face …

The Physical And Psychosocial Health Status Of Clients With Spinal Cord Injury Awarded Damages In Litigation, Irmo Marini, Eva Miller

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

As the specialization of life care planning continues to evolve, a greater emphasis is occurring from both within the discipline and externally for empirically driven data to support life care planner opinions. One area remaining unresolved pertains to life care planners’ knowledge of how, or if, their life care plan has been implemented post-settlement. A related area pertains to the daily physical and psychosocial health issues of persons with spinal cord injury which can impact the development of their life care plan. The present pilot study explored injury related characteristics and the post-settlement expenditures of former life care plan clients …

Religion And Spirituality In Professional Psychologist Training: A Survey Of Interns., Elizabeth J. Cassidy Jan 2006

Religion And Spirituality In Professional Psychologist Training: A Survey Of Interns., Elizabeth J. Cassidy

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study examined doctoral psychology training practices in religion and spirituality. The relationships between training, religious/spiritual beliefs, and self-reported competence to address spirituality in counseling were explored. Approximately 253 clinical and counseling psychology interns completed a demographic questionnaire, a survey of religious/spiritual training received, measures of religious commitment and of the personal importance of spirituality, and a measure of self-perceived competence in addressing religious/spiritual issues in counseling. The return rate was 28%. Results suggest that a majority of interns had not been offered specific training in religion/spirituality and counseling; a majority felt only moderately competent to address spirituality within counseling; …

Social Interactions Of Siblings Of Children With Autism: A Pilot Experiment, Sarah Janota '06 Jan 2006

Social Interactions Of Siblings Of Children With Autism: A Pilot Experiment, Sarah Janota '06

Honors Projects

Despite the overwhelming amount of typical sibling relationship research available, there are few studies regarding sibling relationships involving autism. Of those, even fewer use experimental designs. The present study explored the hypothesis that siblings of children with autism-spectrum disorders develop increased compassion for others. Compassion was operationally measured through three dependent variables: participants' willingness to help, like, and interact with others. The study used an experimental design testing the social response of siblings of children with autism to potential peers who varied with respect to three independent variables: disability status (cystic fibrosis, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, autism, or typically-developing), priming …
