An Instrumental Case Study Of The Phenomenon Of Collaboration In The Process Of Improving Community College Developmental Reading And Writing Instruction, Patricia C. Gordin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Focusing upon the intersections between community college faculty and assessment professionals (e.g., institutional researchers) in improving student learning outcomes, the purpose of this study was to describe, analyze, and interpret the experiences of these professionals as they planned for and conducted student learning outcomes assessment in developmental reading, writing, and study skills courses. This instrumental case study at one particular community college in Florida investigated the roles played by these individuals within the larger college effort to develop a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), an essential component of a regional accreditation review. The methodology included individual interviews, a focus group interview, …
Development Of A Microsphere-Based Immunoassay For The Detection Of Igm Antibodies To West Nile Virus And St. Louis Encephalitis Virus In Sentinel Chicken Sera, Logan C. Haller
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
West Nile virus (WNV) and St. Louis Encephalitis (SLEV) are arthropod-borne viruses belonging to the genus Flavivirus and are classified as significant human pathogens of global epidemiological importance. Since its introduction into the United States in 1999, WNV has spread throughout most of the country and has caused major epidemics of neuroinvasive disease (Hayes and Gubler, 2005). SLEV is endemic to the United States and is maintained in an enzootic transmission cycle in Florida. The Florida Sentinel Chicken Arboviral Surveillance Network was established in 1978 following a widespread rural epidemic of SLEV in central Florida to monitor the activity of arboviruses …
Realism, Sovereignty, And International Relations: An Examination Of Power Politics In The Age Of Globalization, Tyler Harrison
Realism, Sovereignty, And International Relations: An Examination Of Power Politics In The Age Of Globalization, Tyler Harrison
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Many globalization theorists make the claim that the state, in its current Westphalian context, is no longer a viable unit of analysis in comparative politics or international relations. Globalists claim that in the wake of unprecedented, global integration, the state is either in retreat or on the verge of full scale extinction. In a general sense, this paper explores whether there is a sufficient amount of evidence to supports the claims of globalists that the state is dying. Moreover, the paper looks at the specific issue areas of international trade, multilateralism and the environment to determine what effects globalization has …
Evaluating The Reliability Of Continuous Resistivity Profiling To Detect Submarine Groundwater Discharge In A Shallow Marine Environment: Sarasota Bay, Florida, Arnell Harrison
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) can be an important pathway for nutrients entering coastal systems. However SGD flow paths can be difficult to identify and flow volumes difficult to quantify. This study assesses whether geophysical techniques are potentially cost effective methods for detecting the presence or lack of SGD within an estuary environment found in Sarasota Bay, Florida. In this area, a rapid increase in urbanization has led to increased nitrogen loading into the bay, with some 10% of this loading attributed to SGD. Discharging groundwater is expected to be fresher and hence higher resistivity, than "background" surface waters. Thus resistivity …
Ferrite-Ferroelectric Thin Films With Tunable Electrical And Magnetic Properties, Ranko Heindl
Ferrite-Ferroelectric Thin Films With Tunable Electrical And Magnetic Properties, Ranko Heindl
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A growing need for developing new multi-functional materials operating at microwave frequencies is demanding a better understanding of ferroelectric and ferrimagnetic materials and their combinations. Some of these materials exhibit tunable physical properties, giving an extra degree of freedom in the device design. New multifunctional ferroelectric and ferrimagnetic thin film structures are investigated in this dissertation research, in which dielectric and magnetic properties can separately be tuned over a certain frequency range. The materials of choice, Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST) and BaFe12O19 (BaM), both well studied and used in many microwave applications, were prepared using rf magnetron sputtering and pulsed laser ablation. …
Strategic Geographic Positioning Of Sea Level Gauges To Aid In Early Detection Of Tsunamis In The Intra-Americas Sea, Joshua I. Henson
Strategic Geographic Positioning Of Sea Level Gauges To Aid In Early Detection Of Tsunamis In The Intra-Americas Sea, Joshua I. Henson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
A tsunami is a series of large amplitude, shallow water waves generated by an event capable of displacing a massive volume of water. The displaced water propagates at speeds in excess of 800 kph until it dissipates or impacts a shoreline where it slows to 30 --
50 kph [NOAA and USGS Fact Sheet, 2005]. Earthquakes are the predominant tsunamigenic event, however, landslides, avalanches, submarine slumps or slides, volcanic eruptions, volcano flank failure, and meteor impact into an ocean can also cause a tsunami [McCann, 2004; O'Loughlin and Lander, 2003; Pararas-Carayannis, 2004]. This study includes past Caribbean tsunamigenic events assumed …

Confronting College: Foster Care Youth Deciding Whether To Participate In Higher Education Programs, Linda K. Herlocker
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study's purpose was to explore the college choice process for foster care youth who are aging out of Florida's protective services system. The research methodology included three components. First, a survey of the Independent Living Coordinators throughout the state of Florida solicited data regarding participation rates and enrollment patterns among foster care youth. Next, in a meeting setting, a survey was administered to foster care youth, probing the extent to which they considered certain college choice decision factors. Finally, upon completion of the survey, participants remained for a guided focus group discussion to further explore their decision criteria. The results …
The Karst Of West-Central Florida, Lee John Florea
The Karst Of West-Central Florida, Lee John Florea
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Caves, the cornerstone feature of karst aquifers, are little understood in Florida. This dissertation, which analyzes the morphology, elevation, lithologic setting, and hydrology of caves in west-central Florida, demonstrates that the karst of the unconfined Floridan aquifer differs from the paradigm view of karst presented in modern geology textbooks. The differences reflect setting: eogenetic (west-central Florida) vs. telogenetic (conventional). Interpretations about the architecture of cavernous porosity in this dissertation come from detailed surveys (497 stations) of seven air-filled caves. The surveys reveal that solution cavities within the unconfined Floridan aquifer align along NE-SW and NW-SE fractures. The surveys further identify tabular …
Improving Prostate Cancer Detection In Veterans Through The Development Of A Clinical Decision Rule For Prostate Biopsy, Owen T. Hill
Improving Prostate Cancer Detection In Veterans Through The Development Of A Clinical Decision Rule For Prostate Biopsy, Owen T. Hill
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the U.S., the number of prostate biopsies increases annually. This is partly due to elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) values identified during PC screening. This study's goal was improving prostate cancer (PC) detection through developing a clinical decision rule (CDR), based on an elevated PSA and laboratory biomarkers. This decision rule could be used after an elevated PSA, providing the patient and clinician information to consider prior to biopsy. This cross-sectional study evaluated men from the Tampa, Florida, James A. Haley (JH) VA (N=1,378), from January 1, 1998, through April 15, 2005. The study hypothesized that specific lab biomarkers …

Development And Evaluation Of An Inertial Based Pavement Roughness Measuring System, Fengxuan Hu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Roughness is an important indicator of pavement riding comfort and safety. It is a condition indicator that should be carefully considered when evaluating primary pavements. At the same time, the use of roughness measurements plays a critical role in the pavement management system. There are many devices used for roughness evaluation. The major tools used for road roughness quantify are the road profilers. In the thesis research, in order to obtain useful pavement surface condition data for pavement evaluation, an inertial based pavement roughness measuring system was developed with the combination of modern sensor technology and computer technology. The research will …
The Influence Of The “Book Of Job” On The Middle English Morality Plays, Cameron Hunt-Logan
The Influence Of The “Book Of Job” On The Middle English Morality Plays, Cameron Hunt-Logan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The Book of Job was extremely popular in the Middle Ages, especially in England, because of its role in liturgy as well as lay religious devotion. I argue that the Book of Job was heavily influential in the writing of the medieval morality plays Castle of Perseverance, Mankind, Wisdom, and Everyman. In the plays, the dramatists mirrored many of Job's structural and artistic elements, creating direct parallels between the Biblical text and the morality plays. The authors also relied on Job's ideological framework to establish their own arguments, forming not only a textual but ideological linkage. Yet the most intriguing …
Salinity- And Temperature-Dependent Groundwater Flow In The Floridan Aquifer System Of South Florida, Joseph D. Hughes
Salinity- And Temperature-Dependent Groundwater Flow In The Floridan Aquifer System Of South Florida, Joseph D. Hughes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Density-dependent groundwater flow in the Floridan aquifer system (FAS) depends on chloride concentrations and fluid temperature. Previous studies addressing the role of chloride concentration and temperatures on groundwater flow in the FAS have relied on observation data or simplified two-dimensional numerical models. A three-dimensional hydrologic analysis of FAS in peninsular Florida was performed using a modified version of SUTRA (SUTRA-MS) capable of simulating multi-species solute and heat transport. SUTRA-MS was developed during this investigation and is capable of reproducing results for several problems with known solutions. The model was developed using available geometric and hydraulic parameter data and calibrated using hydraulic …
Tampa’S Lafayette Street Bridge: Building A New South City, Lucy D. Jones
Tampa’S Lafayette Street Bridge: Building A New South City, Lucy D. Jones
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The late nineteenth and early twentieth century was a time of dynamic social and political change for Tampa, a growing city on Florida's west coast. These changes led Tampa's commercial-civic elite to look beyond the law, the militia, and the church for ways to maintain their sense of order. This thesis illustrates non-violent enforcement of the status quo via public works, specifically bridge construction over the Hillsborough River. Over a period of three decades, three different bridges were built at the same place, at Lafayette Street. Each time the bridge was built or replaced, it was ostensibly for a different …
A Comparability Analysis Of The National Nurse Aide Assessment Program, Peggy K. Jones
A Comparability Analysis Of The National Nurse Aide Assessment Program, Peggy K. Jones
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
When an exam is administered across dual platforms, such as paper-and-pencil and computer-based testing simultaneously, individual items may become more or less difficult in the computer version (CBT) as compared to the paper-and-pencil (P&P) version, possibly resulting in a shift in the overall difficulty of the test (Mazzeo & Harvey, 1988). Using 38,955 examinees' response data across five forms of the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) administered in both the CBT and P&P mode, three methods of differential item functioning (DIF) detection were used to detect item DIF across platforms. The three methods were Mantel-Haenszel (MH), Logistic Regression (LR), …
Spring Break: Image, Identity, And Consumer Culture In A Florida Rite Of Passage, Meeghan Kane
Spring Break: Image, Identity, And Consumer Culture In A Florida Rite Of Passage, Meeghan Kane
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a social history of spring break, examining the economic and social aspects of this youth culture phenomenon in Florida. Spring break follows the evolution of youth culture's increasingly complex relationship with an expanding consumer culture. I am exploring its many manifestations in music, film, and popular fiction, but also its rebellious expressions in the riots and arrests on Florida's beaches. I intend to focus on the small beach communities that were transformed by spring break, particularly Fort Lauderdale.Spring break in Florida dates back to the late 1920s in Palm Beach. Wealthy New England families spent their winters …
The Realism Of Hans Morgenthau, Brian A. Keaney
The Realism Of Hans Morgenthau, Brian A. Keaney
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes the life and career of Hans J. Morgenthau, commonly accepted as the father of the realist paradigm within the field of international relations. It does so by offering a dynamic revisionist account of the nature of Morgenthau's classical realism and suggests how the approach discussed might have wider application in the field of international relations. Traditional perspectives of Morgenthau suggest that in the course of his career, he changed from holding what would generally be labeled a conservative political viewpoint to a liberal political viewpoint. This thesis takes a different starting point. It does so by suggesting …
Measuring Culture: The Development Of A Multidimensional Culture Scale, Haitham A. Khoury
Measuring Culture: The Development Of A Multidimensional Culture Scale, Haitham A. Khoury
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fundamental to the debate of culture and its impact is the identification of the dimensions that comprise it. The impact of culture as an explanatory variable can be found in various social, scientific, and economic arenas, such as social perception, economic development, and the organization of industries and companies. By identifying and measuring these dimensions, researchers can then organize cultures empirically and develop complex descriptions of various cultures. The study aimed to test the structure of the dimensions proposed by Ho and Chiu (1994) by means of scale development. Test-item writers involved psychology graduate students of various nationalities with the …
Structured Light For Three-Dimensional Microscopy, Leo G. Krzewina
Structured Light For Three-Dimensional Microscopy, Leo G. Krzewina
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The conventional light microscope is an indispensable tool for many physical and life science applications, but is of limited usefulness for three-dimensional imaging due to its increasingly narrow depth of field at high magnifications. Focused regions may be obscured by defocused neighbors or noise from extraneous light sources and subsurface scattering. By rejecting light originating from outside the depth of focus it is possible to minimize these problems. When a contiguous series of such focused slices, or optical sections, are obtained along an axis of an extended object they may be combined to form a complete, focused three-dimensional surface image. …
Part-Time Faculty Job Satisfaction: A Study Of The Influence Of Instructional Technology On Part-Time Faculty In Post-Secondary Institutions, John P. Kurnik
Part-Time Faculty Job Satisfaction: A Study Of The Influence Of Instructional Technology On Part-Time Faculty In Post-Secondary Institutions, John P. Kurnik
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In 1990, two-year colleges nationwide reported that approximately 38% of their faculty were part-time. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics' (NCES) 1999 National Study of Post-Secondary Faculty (NSOPF), this percentage continues to rise, and currently exists at 40% or more in some two-year and four-year institutions. To retain competent, qualified, and successful teachers, it is critical for higher education administrators to determine factors that may contribute to part-time faculty's job satisfaction. This study investigated whether the use of instructional technology for curriculum delivery affected part-time faculty job satisfaction by investigating four specific areas that may be affected. The …

The Signature Poetics Of Sharon Olds And John Cage, Walter E. Lewallen
The Signature Poetics Of Sharon Olds And John Cage, Walter E. Lewallen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation studies and applies the signature theory of Jacques Derrida to two American poets, Sharon Olds and John Cage. I begin by looking at the two texts by Derrida that most closely apply signature theory to poetics: Glas and Signsponge. Along the way, I narrow the scope of Derrida's writing somewhat by focusing on psychoanalytic aspects that relate to Jacques Lacan's ideas and to the concept of the superego. From this work I isolate some protocols for reading, which are then used to study Olds and Cage, two poets who have clearly developed their own signature styles. Here are …
An Evaluation Of A Pedagogical Reform Designed For College Chemistry Teaching With Large Classes, Scott Edwin Lewis
An Evaluation Of A Pedagogical Reform Designed For College Chemistry Teaching With Large Classes, Scott Edwin Lewis
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This work presents an evaluation of a reform teaching practice, known as peer-led guided inquiry, that combines guided inquiry and cooperative learning for college chemistry teaching. Integral to implementing the reform in a large class (greater than 100 students) was the role of peer leaders, undergraduate students who have successfully completed the target course. These peer leaders facilitated cooperative learning groups during weekly guided inquiry activities in general chemistry. The evaluation, using data collected over a 3-year period, had two main foci: effective teaching and promotion of equity in the classroom. Both of these aims were evaluated using hierarchical linear …
Electrically Charged Sol-Gel Coatings For On-Line Preconcentration And Analysis Of Zwitterionic Biomolecules By Capillary Electrophoresis, Wen Li
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Novel on-line methods are presented for the extraction, preconcentration and analysis of zwitterionic biomolecules using sol-gel-coated columns coupled to a conventional UV/visible detector. The presented approaches do not require any additional modification of the commercially available standard CE instrument. Extraction, stacking, and focusing techniques were used in the preconcentration procedures. The positively charged sol-gel coatings were created using N-octadecyldimethyl[3-(trimethoxysilyl) proply]ammonium chloride (C18-TMS) in the coating sol solutions. Due to the presence of a positively charged quaternary ammonium moiety in C18-TMS, the resulting sol-gel coating carried a positive charge. The negatively charged sol-gel coatings were due to the presence of sulfonate …
Breathing Easier: Ethnographic Study Of Acute Respiratory Infection In Children In Rural Ecuador, John S. Luque
Breathing Easier: Ethnographic Study Of Acute Respiratory Infection In Children In Rural Ecuador, John S. Luque
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation research utilizes anthropological methods to determine the degree to which the signs and symptoms female caregivers identify as causes of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) in under-fives in rural Ecuador correspond with Western biomedical categories. By employing both a semi-structured medical history questionnaire and more open-ended ethnographic methods such as in-depth informant interviews and focus group research, the researcher identifies the factors which determine timely health care-seeking behaviors of female caregivers in this case study. Economic factors such as the cost of medications and lost work hours were determined to be the primary financial obstacles for timely health care-seeking. …
The Role Of The Home Literacy Environment In The Development Of Early Literacy Skills And School Readiness In Kindergarten Children From Low Socioeconomic And Minority Families, Nicole R. Martin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The present study investigated the relationship between two predictor variables and children's Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy Initial Sound Fluency (ISF) and Letter Naming Fluency (LNF) scores, as well as Early Screening Inventory-Kindergarten (ESI-K) scores. The two predictor variables were 1) parents' perception of their home literacy environment, and 2) parental beliefs about the importance of literacy (race had to be dropped out of the study due to the limited amount of participants per race variable). The participants were 68 kindergarten students and their parents from two schools in a school district in West Central Florida. Results showed that the …
Moderating Effect Of Negative Affectivity On The Job Satisfaction-Turnover Intentions And Justice-Turnover Intentions Relationships, Joseph J. Mazzola
Moderating Effect Of Negative Affectivity On The Job Satisfaction-Turnover Intentions And Justice-Turnover Intentions Relationships, Joseph J. Mazzola
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Although many people experiences dissatisfaction with their jobs at some time or another, not all of them quit their jobs because of it. Why do some employees simply continue to work in an unsatisfying environment? In this study, it is hypothesized that part of the reason is based on the individual's personality, specifically their scores on positive and negative affectivity. Results showed that neither NA nor PA moderated the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intentions/job search, contrary to previous literature. This study suggests that the moderation effect of personality on this relationship, either does not exist or is more …
Examining The Characteristics Of Teachers In A Master Of Arts In Teaching (Mat) Program In Varying Exceptionalities: Responding To The “Highly Qualified” Teacher Mandate, Erica Djuan Mccray
Examining The Characteristics Of Teachers In A Master Of Arts In Teaching (Mat) Program In Varying Exceptionalities: Responding To The “Highly Qualified” Teacher Mandate, Erica Djuan Mccray
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (2002) mandated that every teacher be highly qualified by the close of the 2005-2006 school year. However, the means by which newly certified teachers are prepared has been questioned. In addition to understanding how teachers enter the field, researchers have indicated a vested interest in examining who comes into the field. More specifically, the characteristics and experiences of pre-service and in-service special educators are of great interest (McKlesky & Ross, 2003; Rosenberg & Sindelar, 2001). The present study examined the characteristics of six teachers in the final internship phase of a Master …
