Experimental And Theoretical (E,2e) Ionization Cross Sections For A Hydrogen Target At 75.3 Ev Incident Energy In A Coplanar Asymmetric Geometry, Junfang Gao, Don H. Madison, Jerry Peacher, Andrew James Murray, Martyn J. Hussey

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Very recently it was shown that the molecular three-body distorted wave (M3DW) approach gives good agreement with the shape of the experimental data for electron-impact ionization of H2 in a coplanar symmetric geometry, providing the incident electrons have an energy of 35 eV or greater. One of the weaknesses of these studies was that only the shape of the cross section could be compared to experiment, since there was no absolute or relative normalization of the data. Here we report a joint experimental/theoretical study of electron-impact ionization of H2 in a coplanar asymmetric geometry where the energy of …

Kinematically Complete Experiment On Single Ionization In 75-Kev P+He Collisions, Michael Schulz, Ahmad Hasan, N. V. Maydanyuk, M. Foster, B. Tooke, Don H. Madison Jan 2006

Kinematically Complete Experiment On Single Ionization In 75-Kev P+He Collisions, Michael Schulz, Ahmad Hasan, N. V. Maydanyuk, M. Foster, B. Tooke, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have measured and calculated fully differential single-ionization cross sections for the complete three-dimensional space in 75 keV p+He collisions. Several signatures of the projectile-residual-target-ion interaction, some of which are not observable for fast projectiles and for electron impact, are revealed. Some of these features are qualitatively reproduced by our calculations if this interaction is accounted for. However, overall the agreement between theory and experiment is not very good. Thus, our understanding of effects caused by the projectile-residual-target-ion interaction appears to be rather incomplete.

Spin Excitations In Fluctuating Stripe Phases Of Doped Cuprate Superconductors, Matthias Vojta, Thomas Vojta, Ribhu K. Kaul Jan 2006

Spin Excitations In Fluctuating Stripe Phases Of Doped Cuprate Superconductors, Matthias Vojta, Thomas Vojta, Ribhu K. Kaul

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using a phenomenological lattice model of coupled spin and charge modes, we determine the spin susceptibility in the presence of fluctuating stripe charge order. We assume the charge fluctuations to be slow compared to those of the spins, and combine Monte Carlo simulations for the charge order parameter with exact diagonalization of the spin sector. Our calculations unify the spin dynamics of both static and fluctuating stripe phases and support the notion of a universal spin excitation spectrum in doped cuprate superconductors.

Multi-Scale Variability In Phytoplankton Populations Of The North Atlantic Basin: From Eddies To Global Change, Sophie C. Leterme

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) survey has been deployed since 1931 to describe and analyze plankton variability in the North Atlantic and North Sea. This survey measures the presence and abundance of 437 phytoplankton and zooplankton taxa and provides an assessment of phytoplankton biomass, the Phytoplankton Colour Index (VCI). The diatoms and dinoflagellates are the two main phytoplankton groups identified by the CPR survey. The first part of this work provides insights into the space-time dynamics of phytoplankton communities through an analysis of diatom and dinoflagellate populations in the whole North Atlantic basin. Because the North Atlantic Ocean includes many …

Modulation Of The Health Status Of Ornamental Fish By Stress And Dietary Immuno-Stimulants, Stuart Maudling Jan 2006

Modulation Of The Health Status Of Ornamental Fish By Stress And Dietary Immuno-Stimulants, Stuart Maudling

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Three trials were conducted to investigate the effects of dietary immuno-stimulant supplementation on various physiological, haematological and immunological parameters of ornamental fish following stress and vaccination. The first series of experiments investigated the mucosal stress response of mirror carp, (Cyprinus carpio), using urinalysis strips and established stress indicators within peripheral blood. A netting stressor, which combined aerial exposure and confinement, of 6 minutes duration was applied and the response of fish was measured 1.5, 3, 5, 24 and 168 hours post-stress. Mucosal haemoglobin and protein were established as consistent indicators of stress and strong relationships could be drawn between them …

Identification Of Structural And Antigenic Components Of Bacillus Anthracis Spores And Their Application To Rapid Detection Using Biosensors, Tracey Elizabeth Love Jan 2006

Identification Of Structural And Antigenic Components Of Bacillus Anthracis Spores And Their Application To Rapid Detection Using Biosensors, Tracey Elizabeth Love

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The work presented in this thesis describes a rational design approach to the rapid detection of Bacillus anthracis spores. A range of assay formats are available for detection of B. anthracis, however none fulfil the criteria of speed, sensitivity or specificity. Optical biosensors have shown promise for the near real time detection of low molecular weight analytes, although exploitation of these systems for bacterial detection has been restricted due to a comparative lack of sensitivity. Electroporation was unsuitable as a disruption method for immunoassay based techniques, whereas preliminary experiments suggested sonication could be utilised. A novel tubular sonicator designed to …

The Effect Of Pre-Weaning Feeding Behaviour On Post-Weaning Feeding Behaviour In Pigs Weaned At 3, 4 And 5 Weeks Of Age, Christos Antonios Tsourgiannis

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

A program of study was undertaken to asses the effect of pre-weaning feeding behaviour on post-weaning feeding behaviour in pigs weaned at various ages (3, 4 and 5 weeks of age) and to identify ways of increasing their post-weaning feed intake. The studies were constructed using time extensive continuous recording methods in order to monitor the 'true' behaviour unbiased by sampling errors. Piglets weaned at 3 weeks of age had the ability to grow faster and became significantly heavier at six weeks of age (3W: 12.S06 ± 0.629 kg) than piglets that had to extent their stay for one (4W: …

Effect Of Nozzle Base Material On The Rate Of Clogging During The Continuous Casting Of Aluminum-Killed Steels, Luis Trueba, Kent D. Peaslee, Jeffrey D. Smith, Musa Karakus

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

One approach to solving the problem of nozzle clogging during the continuous casting of aluminum-killed steels is through careful selection of nozzle materials. in this study, the rate of clogging was measured while casting steel through simulated nozzles produced from alumina, zirconia, magnesia, zirconia-graphite, and alumina-graphite - three common base materials and two common carbon-containing nozzle materials. Spent nozzles were characterized using optical and cathodoluminescence microscopy. Interactions between the nozzles and steel were not observed in the alumina, zirconia, and zirconia-graphite nozzles. Slight interactions were observed in the magnesia nozzles as alumina inclusions within the steel interacted with the nozzle …

Electronic Data Discovery: Integrating Due Process Into Cyber Forensic Practice, John W. Bagby, John C. Ruhnka

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Most organizations and government agencies regularly become engaged in litigation with suppliers, customers, clients, employees, competitors, shareholders, prosecutors or regulatory agencies that nearly assures the need to organize, retain, find and produce business records and correspondence, emails, accounting records or other data relevant to disputed issues. This article discusses some high visibility cases that constrain how metadata and content is routinely made available to opposing parties in civil litigation, to prosecutors in criminal prosecutions and to agency staff in regulatory enforcement litigation. Public policy, as implemented in the rules of evidence and pretrial discovery, restrict electronic data discovery (EDD) as …

Alphaco: A Teaching Case On Information Technology Audit And Security, Hüseyin Tanriverdi, Joshua Bertsch, Jonathan Harrison, Po-Ling Hsiao, Ketan S. Mesuria, David Hendrawirawan

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Recent regulations in the United States (U.S.) such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 require top management of a public firm to provide reasonable assurance that they institute internal controls that minimize risks over the firm’s operations and financial reporting. External auditors are required to attest to the management’s assertions over the effectiveness of those internal controls. As firms rely more on information technology (IT) in conducting business, they also become more vulnerable to IT related risks. IT is critical for initiating, recording, processing, summarizing and reporting accurate financial and non-financial data. Thus, understanding IT related risks and instituting internal …

Children Experiencing Parental Incarceration: An Examination Of Literature And Supportive Programming, Telisa A. Burt Jan 2006

Children Experiencing Parental Incarceration: An Examination Of Literature And Supportive Programming, Telisa A. Burt

Graduate Research Papers

Parental incarceration is becoming an increasing relevant topic as American society continues in its tendency toward mass incarceration. As mandatory minimums send away criminals for longer periods of time, it also serves as a major cause behind parent-child separation. In the United States, it is estimated that there are over 1.5 million children with at least one incarcerated parent and about 7 million children with a parent under some form of correctional supervision. According to research, these children are more likely to become incarcerated and many are expected to experience either juvenile or adult incarceration in their lifetime. This study …

Effects Of Trait Anxiety And Cognitive Appraisals On Emotional Reactions To Psychological And Physical Stressors, Qutayba Abdullatif

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the effects of individual differences in trait anxiety on cognitive appraisals and emotional reactions to stressful situations. Specifically, the effects of trait anxiety on the evaluation of psychological and physical threats to well-being were examined in relation to state-anxiety. To accomplish this goal, a proposed model consisting of elements from the Lazarus and Folkman Stress and Coping Model (1984) and Spielberger's State Trait distinctions is presented. To our knowledge, this is the first proposed model to attempt to combine trait anxiety, primary and secondary appraisals, and state anxiety and to utilize path analytic models in assessing empirical …

Another Paradise Lost? : A Case Study Of Nation Building In East Timor, Brendan Paul Mcshanag Jan 2006

Another Paradise Lost? : A Case Study Of Nation Building In East Timor, Brendan Paul Mcshanag

Theses : Honours

This thesis examines the form of reconstruction intervention known as 'nation building', through a case study of the United Nations led operation in East Timor that began in 1999. It examines how the idea of the nation and statehood first arose, and how these ideals are still prevalent in modern nation building interventions. The thesis also examines the weaknesses and ambiguities that have become associated with nation building, and how such weaknesses have found a common thread through subsequent interventions The thesis then uses the case study of the intervention in East Timor, dividing the operation in to three stages; …

Finding The Watermark: A Filmic Response To Domestic Abuse Within Australian Film From 1970 - 2006, Erin Nichols Jan 2006

Finding The Watermark: A Filmic Response To Domestic Abuse Within Australian Film From 1970 - 2006, Erin Nichols

Theses : Honours

Due to various social, international and economic encumbrances, Australian film has made a limited foray into the representation of domestic abuse. A limited number of films have been made on this topic since the early 1970's, and even then, the depiction of this social issue has been watered down and sanitised for mainstream consumption. It is the author's belief that the filmmaker has an important and highly influential opportunity to present a social commentary on issues and must not shirk that responsibility. The film project supported by this exegesis responds to the above concerns and the priority has been to …

Taiwan's Wto Membership And Its International Implications, Steve Charnovitz Jan 2006

Taiwan's Wto Membership And Its International Implications, Steve Charnovitz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In contrast to other international organizations, the World Trade Organization does not require its members to be states. This constitutional feature has allowed Taiwan to join the WTO alongside China. As a result, the WTO is now the only major international organization in which Taiwan can participate as a full member. This article explores some implications of this unique situation for Taiwan, for the WTO, and for international law. The article contends that Taiwan's membership in the WTO is not itself a bilateral treaty with China and does not itself change the legal relationship between Taiwan and China. What Taiwan's …

The (Neglected) Employment Dimension Of The World Trade Organization, Steve Charnovitz Jan 2006

The (Neglected) Employment Dimension Of The World Trade Organization, Steve Charnovitz

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

A key assumption underlying the World Trade Organization (WTO) is that its program of trade negotiations will strengthen the world economy and lead to more trade, investment, employment and income growth throughout the world. In the author's view, the WTO truly is strengthening the world economy and promoting trade and investment in many parts of the world. Yet the rest of the thesis is debatable. Is it necessarily true that the WTO and the trade negotiations it sponsors are increasing employment and income growth throughout the world? Indeed, even aggregating the world economy into one planetary unit, one wonders whether …

The Common Law As An Iterative Process: A Preliminary Inquiry, Lawrence A. Cunningham Jan 2006

The Common Law As An Iterative Process: A Preliminary Inquiry, Lawrence A. Cunningham

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The common law often is casually referred to as an iterative process without much attention given to the detailed attributes such processes exhibit. This Article explores this characterization, uncovering how common law as an iterative process is one of endless repetition that is simultaneously stable and dynamic, self-similar but evolving, complex yet simple. These attributes constrain the systemic significance of judicial discretion and also confirm the wisdom of traditional approaches to studying and learning law. As an iterative system, common law exhibits what physicists call sensitive dependence on initial conditions. This generates a path dependency from which it may be …

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act: Legal Implications And Research Opportunities, Lawrence A. Cunningham, Stephen Kwaku Asare, Arnold Wright

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Congress passed the Sarbanes Oxley Act to restore investor confidence, which had been deflated by massive business and audit failures, epitomized by the demise of the Enron Corporation and Arthur Anderson LLP. The Act altered the roles and responsibilities of auditors, corporate officers, audit committee members, as well as other participants in the financial reporting process. We evaluate the potential legal implications of some of the Act's major provisions and anticipate participants' likely responses. Our evaluation suggests that these provisions will significantly change behavior, increase compliance costs and alter the legal landscape. We also identify promising avenues for future research …
