Parent Resources And High School Quality In The Context Of The Rural Gap In Postsecondary Educational Attainment, Edward B. Reeves Jan 2006

Parent Resources And High School Quality In The Context Of The Rural Gap In Postsecondary Educational Attainment, Edward B. Reeves

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The goal of the present study is to explain the effects of parent resources and secondary school quality in bringing about these patterns in the context of the rural gap in higher educational attainment. Using a nationally representative data set that tracks individual student careers in high school and beyond (which NELS provides) lays a strong empirical foundation for the investigation of this topic.

"Life Into Dry Bones": Emergence Of The Female Artist And Community Integration In L.M. Montgomery's Novels Of Development, Laurie Elizabeth Stein Jan 2006

"Life Into Dry Bones": Emergence Of The Female Artist And Community Integration In L.M. Montgomery's Novels Of Development, Laurie Elizabeth Stein

Honors Papers

"If I'm to be dragged at Anne's chariot wheels the rest of my life I'll bitterly repent having 'created' her."[ So wrote Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) in September 1908, a mere few months after the publication of her first novel, Anne of Green Gables, which had quickly become a bestseller. Of course Montgomery knew, and we can see with hindsight, that "Anne's chariot wheels" were and are nothing to scoff at. Quite clearly they propelled Montgomery to popular renown, financial success and literary acclaim - both then and now. Then, beginning in 1908 and continuing through her career, "Anne's chariot …

Activist Anthropology: An Ethnography Of Asian American Student Activism At Oberlin College, Ashley R. Suarez Jan 2006

Activist Anthropology: An Ethnography Of Asian American Student Activism At Oberlin College, Ashley R. Suarez

Honors Papers

This thesis examines the issues that have become enmeshed in the body politic of the current generation of Asian/Pacific American student activists at Oberlin College. It discusses students' personal trials as they confront academic burnout, institutional amnesia, and a continued lack of support for A/PA studies, through a case study of activism in motion. Other aspects of this research include the role of identity in pan-ethnic Asian American community organizing, the power dynamics of identity and the strategic deployment of identity as a political tool (Lowe 1991, Espiritu 1992). In addition, the project highlights emerging concerns in the community and …

Paradoxes And Puzzles: Appreciating Gardens And Urban Nature, Stephanie Ross Jan 2006

Paradoxes And Puzzles: Appreciating Gardens And Urban Nature, Stephanie Ross

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

To explore our appreciation of gardens and urban nature, I propose a recursive definition of original or wild nature together with guidelines for discerning degrees of naturalness. Arguing (contra Robert Elliott) that nature can be restored as well as degraded, I characterize four varieties of urban nature - interrupted, altered, constructed, and virtual. I build on Stan Godlovitch's comments about scale to suggest two modes of appreciation - macroscopic and fine-focused. I close by discussing some particular examples - parks, environmental art, gardens - and drawing some conclusions for the appreciation of vernacular gardens.[1]

Musical Experience As Aesthetic: What Cost The Label?, Wayne Bowman Jan 2006

Musical Experience As Aesthetic: What Cost The Label?, Wayne Bowman

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This brief essay draws upon a number of themes introduced in Carolyn Korsmeyer's recent book Gender and Aesthetics: An Introduction (New York: Routledge, 2004; ISBN: 0415266599). It does not attempt a comprehensive or critical review of her book; instead it focuses selectively on certain of her points in order to raise concerns of some significance to the music education discipline and, perhaps, to philosophical aesthetics. The Varieties Of Aesthetic Disinterestedness, Norman Kreitman Jan 2006

The Varieties Of Aesthetic Disinterestedness, Norman Kreitman

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Disinterestedness, a comparatively recent concept in aesthetics, is commonly held to be one of the characteristics of an appropriate response to art, but can be understood in a number of senses. Three varieties are distinguished: a strong form which confines attention exclusively to the internal relations of the work of art; a moderate variety which links internal and external features of the work but solely within the cognitive domain; and a weak form which permits the appreciator to draw on a wide range of external referents but proscribes purely idiosyncratic responses. An illustration is given of the confusion which can …

Radical Integration, Michelle Adams Jan 2006

Radical Integration, Michelle Adams

Articles

"Radical Integration" explores the two primary theoretical frameworks for achieving black liberation: the integration approach (which can be understood as assimilationist) and the identity-based, community-centered approach (which can be understood as isolationist). I argue that neither framework, by itself, is enough to ensure the achievement of true black liberation. I extract key elements of each approach and harmonize them to envision an entirely new framework. This framework, "radical integration," refocuses on the impact of racial segregation on the black community and simultaneously recognizes the need to address concerns about black identity and black authenticity in an integrated environment.

Evaluation Of Stop Bar Video Detection Accuracy At Signalized Intersections, Avery Rhodes, Darcy M. Bullock, James R. Sturdevant, Zachary Thomas Clark Jan 2006

Evaluation Of Stop Bar Video Detection Accuracy At Signalized Intersections, Avery Rhodes, Darcy M. Bullock, James R. Sturdevant, Zachary Thomas Clark

JTRP Technical Reports

Many agencies nationwide have adopted video vehicle detection technology as an alternative to inductive loops. While many product evaluations have been performed, the majority of these evaluations have concentrated on freeway applications where speed and volume were the primary evaluation criteria. At an actuated intersection, the metrics of speed and volume do not necessarily represent how well a device will operate as a presence detector. Video detection was evaluated at two signalized intersections in West Lafayette, Indiana and Noblesville, Indiana. A camera on each approach was located at the vendor recommended position, at a height of 40 feet and offset …

Ladies In Waiting: A Collection Of Short Stories, Anne Fox

Theses

The stories in this collection feature female characters, mainly grown women. The exception is "Ruby Begonia'· in which the eponymous main character is a little girl with a gift for seeing and believing in things others cannot see.

In "Homefront;· Peggy decides to leave her daughter with her mother-in-law in order to save herself. She suffers from depression. While leaving a daughter behind is not viewed as good mothering, it is infinitely better to having that daughter suffer the effects of her mother's illness.

In "Lessons Learned " the young teacher learns to work things out for the benefits of …

Rfid Et Administration Publique: Le Citoyen Sous Surveillance?, Anthony Hémond Jan 2006

Rfid Et Administration Publique: Le Citoyen Sous Surveillance?, Anthony Hémond

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

Beyond Content: The Emergence Of Video Games And Their Diverse Effects On Legal Normativity As Seen Through The Lens Of Jean Baudrillard, Stephen Orr Jan 2006

Beyond Content: The Emergence Of Video Games And Their Diverse Effects On Legal Normativity As Seen Through The Lens Of Jean Baudrillard, Stephen Orr

Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

Current legal discourse about video games focuses primarily on freedom of speech issues relating to the content of games. Using the work of Jean Baudrillard (and to a small extent Marshall McLuhan) this article reconsiders how we should conceptualize the regulation of video games. Baudrillard's theories are particularly interesting to explore as his pessimistic reflections about technology challenge us to contemplate how profoundly the form of new communicative technologies, such as video games, shape human interactions. Appealing to both theorists' belief that "the medium is the message", this article argues that we should be wary of focusing legal energy exclusively …

Limb-Shaking Transient Ischemic Attacks: Case Report And Review Of Literature, Saad Ali, Muhib Alam Khan, Bhojo Khealani Jan 2006

Limb-Shaking Transient Ischemic Attacks: Case Report And Review Of Literature, Saad Ali, Muhib Alam Khan, Bhojo Khealani

Section of Neurology

Background: Limb shaking Transient Ischemic Attack is a rare manifestation of carotid-occlusive disease. The symptoms usually point towards a seizure like activity and misdiagnosed as focal seizures. On careful history the rhythmic seizure like activity reveals no Jacksonian march mainly precipitated by maneuvers which lead to carotid compression. We here present a case of an elderly gentleman who was initially worked up as suffering from epileptic discharge and then later on found to have carotid occlusion.CASE PRESENTATION: Elderly gentleman presented with symptoms of rhythmic jerky movements of the left arm and both the lower limbs. Clinical suspicion of focal epilepsy …

Respondent Fatigue In Self-Report Victim Surveys: Examining A Source Of Nonsampling Error From Three Perspectives, Timothy C. Hart Jan 2006

Respondent Fatigue In Self-Report Victim Surveys: Examining A Source Of Nonsampling Error From Three Perspectives, Timothy C. Hart

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Survey research is a popular methodology used to gather data on a myriad of phenomena. Self-report victim surveys administered by the Federal government are used to substantially broaden our understanding of the nature and extent of crime. A potential source of nonsampling error, respondent fatigue is thought to manifest in contemporary victim surveys, as respondents become "test wise" after repeated exposure to survey instruments. Using a special longitudinal data file, the presence and influence of respondent fatigue in national self-report victim surveys is examined from three perspectives. Collectively, results provide a comprehensive look at how respondent fatigue may impact crime …

Growth Of 3c-Sic Via A Hot-Wall Cvd Reactor, Suzie Harvey Jan 2006

Growth Of 3c-Sic Via A Hot-Wall Cvd Reactor, Suzie Harvey

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The heteroepitaxial growth of cubic silicon carbide (3C-SiC) on silicon (Si) substrates at high growth rates, via a horizontal hot-wall chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor, has been achieved. The final growth process was developed in three stages; an initial "baseline" development stage, an optimization stage, and a large area growth stage. In all cases the growth was conducted using a two step, carbonization plus growth, process. During carbonization, the surface of the Si is converted to 3C-SiC, which helps to minimize the stress in the growing crystal. Propane (C3H8) and silane (SiH4), diluted in hydrogen (H2), were used as the …

Freedom Fighters, Freedom Haters, Martyrs, And Evildoers: The Social Construction Of Suicide Terrorism, Cã©Cile Valã©Rie Van De Voorde Jan 2006

Freedom Fighters, Freedom Haters, Martyrs, And Evildoers: The Social Construction Of Suicide Terrorism, Cã©Cile Valã©Rie Van De Voorde

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Suicide terrorism is characterized by the willingness of physically and psychologically war-trained individuals to die while destroying or attempting to annihilate enemy targets in furtherance of certain political or social objectives. Rooted in the historical, social, and psychological dimensions of international terrorism, suicide terrorism is neither a unique nor a new phenomenon. Its recent resurgence and the extensive media coverage it has received account for the misleading uniqueness of this violent, complex, and adaptive form of terrorism. This qualitative study examines the definitional and rhetorical processes by which suicide terrorism is socially constructed. Using a social constructionist theoretical framework coupled …

An Exploration Of Middle-Aged And Older Women's Experiences Of Bat Mitzvah Within The Framework Of Erikson's Theory Of Human Development, Keren S. Vergon Jan 2006

An Exploration Of Middle-Aged And Older Women's Experiences Of Bat Mitzvah Within The Framework Of Erikson's Theory Of Human Development, Keren S. Vergon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A growing number of Jewish women are participating in adult bat mitzvah ceremonies in many synagogues across the United States. Little is known about the reasons why women choose to participate in a bat mitzvah ritual as an adult. It is also unclear if women of different ages have different reasons for participating in bat mitzvah.Older women were often not given the opportunity to participate in the bat mitzvah ritual as a young adult, and it is unknown why older women choose to accept the challenge of bat mitzvah. It may be suspected that Jewish women are interested in adult …

Textualism In Gatt/Wto Jurisprudence: Lessons For The Constitutionalization Debate, Dongsheng Zang Jan 2006

Textualism In Gatt/Wto Jurisprudence: Lessons For The Constitutionalization Debate, Dongsheng Zang

Articles

Today, the World Trade Organization (WTO) jurisprudence is subject to tremendous controversy, the WTO panels' or Appellate Body's interpretation of a WTO text is often heatedly debated; and yet, there seems not much attention paid to the general methodology of interpretation in the practice of the General Agreement on Tariff and Trade (GATT) and WTO jurisprudence, even in a recent debate over constitutionalization between Petersmann and his critics. In rejecting his human rights approach to constitutionalization, Petersmann's critics, rightfully, warn him that he has failed to appreciate the complex relations between human rights and free trade in the history of …

Giving Intellectual Property, Xuan-Thao Nguyen, Jeffrey A. Maine Jan 2006

Giving Intellectual Property, Xuan-Thao Nguyen, Jeffrey A. Maine

Articles

The interdisciplinarity of intellectual property and taxation poses many challenges to the disparate existing norms in each respective field of law. This Article identifies and critiques the current tax regime governing the giving of intellectual property as a manifestation of the failure to understand the principles and policies underlying intellectual property and the firm. It proposes an economic, incentives-based system that would encourage firms to extricate part of their repository of residual rights by surrendering their monopolistic ownership of intellectual property for the benefit of charitable organizations and, in turn, the development and growth of society.
