A Tuberculosis Contact Investigation Involving Two Private Nursing Homes In Inner Western Sydney In 2004, Bradley Forssman, Leena Gupta, Kay Mills
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Australia has one of the lowest incidence rates of tuberculosis (TB) in the world, approximately five per 100,000 per year 1, although in some parts of the country the incidence is considerably higher. In the former Central Sydney Area Health Service the incidence rate in 2003 was 14 per 100,000 per year.2 The incidence is also higher in those aged 65 years and over1, a population that has declining immunocompetence due to a variety of factors.3 Furthermore, the subpopulation of this group (and, indeed, of people of any age) living in residential institutions such as nursing homes and hostels are …

Constructing Indices Representing Supportiveness Of The Physical Environment For Walking Using The Rasch Measurement Model, Gavin R. Mccormack, Louise C. Mâsse, Max K. Bulsara, Terri J. Pikora, Billie Giles-Corti
Medical Papers and Journal Articles
Background: The objectives of this study were to use the Rasch model to 1) assess the psychometric properties of a physical environmental audit instrument and 2) to develop indices of interrelated environmental attributes that summarize environmental supportiveness for walking.
Methods: A set of items were derived representing two conceptual physical environmental constructs: 1) functional/safety, and; 2) aesthetics. Ad hoc criteria based on point-biserial and Rasch-based fit statistics were used to examine the construct validity and internal reliability of the two constructs.
Results: The Rasch-based fit statistics assisted in identifying 12 items that belonged to the functional/safety construct and 4 items …

Moving A Part-Time Engineering Course To A Student-Centred Paradigm, Kevin Kelly
Moving A Part-Time Engineering Course To A Student-Centred Paradigm, Kevin Kelly
Level 3
This paper is a further reflection on two conference papers presented at the World Conference for Continuing Engineering Education (WCCEE) in Vienna in April 2006 and National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway Conference: The Challenge of Diversity: Teaching, Support and Student Learning , June 2006. Both conference papers dealt with different aspects of my experiences of the theoretical and pedagogical changes required in re-design and delivery of a part-time engineering programme for the continuing education development of electrical engineers in the workforce.
The Teaching-Research Relationship In Higher Education, Claire M. Mcdonnell
The Teaching-Research Relationship In Higher Education, Claire M. Mcdonnell
Level 3
This paper examines higher education policy regarding the relationship between research and teaching. The initial issue dealt with is whether current policy in Irish higher education recognises a relationship between research and teaching, and to examine the dual role of academics as teachers and as researchers. This is followed by an examination of any measures put in place to manage and balance the teaching–research relationship. The way in which the relationship between research and teaching is dealt with both in my own institution, the Dublin Institute of Technology, and in higher education policy in a number of other countries is …

Enhanced Nutty Flavor Formation In Cheddar Cheese Made With Malty Lactococcus Lactis Adjunct Culture, M. E. Carunchia Whetstine, M. A. Drake, Jeff Broadbent, Donald J. Mcmahon
Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications
Nutty flavor in Cheddar cheese is desirable, and recent research demonstrated that 2- and 3-methyl butanal and 2-methyl propanal were primary sources of nutty flavors in Cheddar. Because malty strains of Lac-tococcus lactis (formerly Streptococcus lactis var. malti-genes) are characterized by the efficient production of these and other Strecker aldehydes during growth, this study investigated the influence of a malty L. lactis adjunct culture on nutty flavor development in Cheddar cheese. Cheeses made with different adjunct levels (0, 10(4) cfu/mL, and 10(5) cfu/mL) were ripened at 5 or 13 degrees C and analyzed after 1 wk, 4 mo, and 8 …

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Under the current circumstances of easy and widespread electronic communication, reduced budgets, and increasing costs for printing and postage, it seems practical as well as prudent to streamline the publication schedule of Documentary Editing by collapsing the Winter and Spring issues into one Spring issue (published in February) and the Summer and Fall issues into one Fall issue (published in August). The current issue (Volume 28, Number 4) brings the old schedule to a close; Volume 29 (2007) is transitional; and Volume 30 will appear under the new regimen of two installments that fit the rhythm of the academic calendar: …
Electronic Medical Records In Acute Care Hospitals: Correlates, Efficiency, And Quality, Abby Jo Swanson
Electronic Medical Records In Acute Care Hospitals: Correlates, Efficiency, And Quality, Abby Jo Swanson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the organizational and environmental correlates of hospital EMR use and to examine the relationship between hospital EMR use and performance. Using a theoretical framework that combines resource dependence theory with Donabedian's structure, process, outcome model, a conceptual model is created. To test the hypotheses of this model, logistic regression and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) are used. The data included in this analysis come from the AHA, HIMSS, CMS, ARF, and HQA. In the analysis of hospitals correlates of EMR use, three hypotheses were supported, and one was partially supported. Hospital system affiliation, …

I am a draftsman, painter and printmaker. This first person statement is a written extension of the art that constitutes my thesis. It discusses the links between my work and the Enlightenment, Humanism, Catholicism, ethics and the Western canon as well as my use of perspective and other classical techniques in relation to history, language, high art, popular culture, propaganda, contemporary upheavals, Christian and Islamic Fundamentalism, globalization and the digital revolution. Furthermore, the main arguments draw upon my Cuban origin and European ancestry, the Cuban Revolution, my Belgian early education and eventual American hybrid identity. The overriding theme, however, concerns …

Let The Servant Church Arise: Waters For The Thirsty, Supper For The Hungry, Rhoda Schuler
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
The title of this address provides some clues about the perspective I bring to the question of the church's mission in the world Use of the term "servant church"-borrowed directly from the hymn ''The Church of Christ in Every Age"1-reveals my bias for language of servanthood to describe that mission. Such language has governed my own identity as a deaconess for nearly three decades. Aidan Kavanaugh argues that the ascetic, who is dedicated to ''the art of maintaining a life of 'right worship,'" serves as the exemplar for the baptized, pointing them toward the Christian's ultimate end: that is, …

Mass And Mission: Enacting God's Mission In The Christian Assembly Today, Thomas H. Schattauer
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
I doubt that I need to underscore the ferment surrounding the matters that are the theme of this year's Institute: worship and mission. The practice of worship in our congregations has become fragmented by multiple and competing proposals for what should happen when we gather. As a teacher of worship, the questions and discussions I encounter day by day reveal a general distrust of conventional liturgical practice and a genuine hunger for something-anything-that will engage and enliven people at worship in our time and place. There is no simple and direct approach to matters of worship-this is what we …

Professional Development Of Efl Teachers In Mexico: Examining Cross-Cultural And Global Linkages, Influences, And Outcomes, Robert A. Devillar, Binbin Jiang
Faculty Articles
During the past twenty years, the paradigm of professional development in U.S. education has shifted from an analyitco-incremental model to an integrative-systematic model. The integrative-systematic model focuses on the whole-scale improvement of general student performance through the articulation, implementation, and assessment of standards that apply to teachers and teacher preparation institutions as well as to students. This article addresses the basis for this paradigm shift in the U.S. and the global expansion of the professional development mandate. The authors describe the first phase of a three-year, cross-cultural professional development program involving English-as-a-Foreign Language (EFL) teachers at a private school in …

Making Sense Of Hybrid Rights: An Analysis Of The Nebraska Supreme Court's Approach To The Hybrid- Rights Exception In Douglas County V. Anaya, Benjamin I. Siminou
Nebraska Law Review
Supreme Court's infamous decision, Employment Division, Department of Human Resources v. Smith unexpectedly and dramatically altered the degree of protection available to religious observers under the Free Exercise Clause. Prior to Smith, the general consensus in the legal community was that even laws unintentionally burdening a claimant's right to free exercise of religion had to serve a compelling governmental interest to pass constitutional muster. Smith reversed this paradigm by characterizing prior free exercise jurisprudence as actually standing for the principal that a neutral law "of general applicability need not be justified by a compelling governmental interest" even where the …
Judicial Independence: The Situation Of The U.S. Federal Judiciary, Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Judicial Independence: The Situation Of The U.S. Federal Judiciary, Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Nebraska Law Review
Essential to the rule of law in any land is an independent judiciary, judges not under the thumb of other branches of Government, and therefore equipped to administer the law impartially. The U.S. Federal Judiciary has been a model for the world in that regard. Fortunately so, for we can promote the rule of law, administered fairly and fearlessly elsewhere--in Afghanistan, Colombia, Iraq, Kosovo, Ukraine, for example--only by vigilantly practicing at home what we preach abroad. As recent experience confirms, however, judicial independence is vulnerable to assault; it can be shattered if the society law exists to serve does not …
The Prophecy Of Poor Dick: The Nebraska Supreme Court Recognizes A Surface Water Appropriator's Claim Against A Hydrologically Connected Ground Water User In Spear T Ranch, Inc. V. Knaub, Joseph A. Kishiyama
The Prophecy Of Poor Dick: The Nebraska Supreme Court Recognizes A Surface Water Appropriator's Claim Against A Hydrologically Connected Ground Water User In Spear T Ranch, Inc. V. Knaub, Joseph A. Kishiyama
Nebraska Law Review
Rex Nielsen, owner of the Spear T Ranch, sustained his livestock with water diverted from Pumpkin Creek for more than fifty years. Today he relies on something else--a backhoe. Pumpkin Creek has run dry, and he has resorted to digging pits to find water for his cattle. This curious ranching practice is the result of a gray area in the law. Nebraska water law embodies a dichotomy whereby ground water and surface water are governed by separate legal doctrines. By ignoring their incontrovertible hydrologic link, this dichotomy fails to address a conflict between a ground water user and a surface …
Looking Out For Your Employees: Employers' Surreptitious Physical Surveillance Of Employees And The Tort Of Invasion Of Privacy, Daniel P. O'Gorman
Looking Out For Your Employees: Employers' Surreptitious Physical Surveillance Of Employees And The Tort Of Invasion Of Privacy, Daniel P. O'Gorman
Nebraska Law Review
The case included many of the classic issues involving the tort of invasion of privacy, such as: In which places does a person have a right of privacy? If a person is in an area that can be viewed by others, does he or she at least have the right to not be photographed or videotaped under certain circumstances? Does it matter that image-enhancing equipment, such as a telephoto lens, is used? Is the purpose of the surveillance relevant? This Article addresses such issues with respect to employers conducting surreptitious physical surveillance of employees. Although such surveillance might, under certain …

Copyright And Open Access: Reconsidering University Ownership Of Faculty Research, Robert C. Denicola, Robert C. Denicola
Nebraska Law Review
In 2001, a group of prominent scientists urged a boycott of scholarly journals that refused to provide free online access to research articles within six months after publication. In an open letter to colleagues they pledged to "publish in, edit or review for, and personally subscribe to only those scholarly and scientific journals" that complied with their demand. They defended their stand with the proposition that "[a]s scientists, we are particularly dependent on ready and unimpeded access to our published literature, the only permanent record of our ideas, discoveries, and research results, upon which future scientific activity and progress are …
Internet Cookies: When Is Permission Consent?, Max Stul Oppenheimer
Internet Cookies: When Is Permission Consent?, Max Stul Oppenheimer
Nebraska Law Review
Consent is the Philosophers' Stone of the law: it can transmute an unconstitutional search into a lawful one, a criminal act into a legal one, or a tort into a contract. As technology has evolved, so has this fundamental legal concept. New forms of communication call for new ways to obtain and manifest consent. Examples include shrink-wrap licenses, click-to-accept licenses, faxed signatures, e-mails, and e-signatures. Each of these forms, however, requires some affirmative action by the person sought to be bound. An emerging issue is whether permissions granted by a computer program can constitute consent on behalf of the computer's …

The Effects Of Interactive Video (Ddr) On Heart Rate, Perceived Exertion, Step Count, Self -Efficacy, And Enjoyment In Elementary School Children, Barbara J. Olmsted
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Rising levels of obesity continue to challenge physical educators to engage their students in activities sufficiently vigorous to accrue health-related benefits. Physically active video games are now recognized as a way to enhance physical activity levels in children. A school-based intervention in fifth- and sixth-grade participants (N=33) compared six lessons each of Dance Dance Revolution (DDR), volleyball, and an exercise video (Tae-Bo) according to the following dependent variables: heart rate, step count, active time, rate of perceived exertion, enjoyment, and self-efficacy. Repeated measures within-subjects comparisons revealed significant main effects for activity type across five dependent variables, and significant interactions for …

Numerical Modeling Of Deformations Caused By Carbon Dioxide Sequestration In Coal Seams, Xiaochao Tang
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Atmospheric concentrations of CO2, as the most prevalent greenhouse gas, have been dramatically increased due to the anthropogenic emission mainly from fuel combustion. Geologic sequestration of CO2 in coal seams is an attractive choice to mitigate global CO2 emissions and its consequences. It can also provide secondary benefits such as enhanced coalbed methane production.;Three coal sites from Appalachian basin and Black Warrior basin were selected to numerically study the effects of CO2 injection in coal seams on overburden deformations. Finite element method was used for the analysis of overburden response. The analysis consisted of two phases---CO 2 injection and pore …
