Market Valuation Of Convertible Securities Of U.S. Airlines, Kseniya P. Beltsova Nov 2006

Market Valuation Of Convertible Securities Of U.S. Airlines, Kseniya P. Beltsova

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The airlines have enormous needs for capital. Historically, capital spending was accountable for about 15 percent of annual airline revenues, more than double the average for manufacturing companies (Arpey, 1995). Access to capital is essential to the long-term viability and growth of the airline industry especially due to the capital-intensive nature of its business. However, highly cyclical nature of the airline business and its severe dependence on general economic condition make investments in the industry risky and uncertain. The airline's junk bond credit rating and enormous amounts of debt result in extremely high costs of capital. In addition, the airlines …

Privacy By Design, C. Nippert-Eng Nov 2006

Privacy By Design, C. Nippert-Eng

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In the United States, “privacy” largely centers on the degree to which an individual feels in control of the accessibility of whatever she or he feels is “private.” In this paper I explore this conceptualization of privacy, drawing on the work of U.S. scholars as well as 74 mostly middle and upper-middle class individuals who were interviewed during a formal study of privacy from June 2001-December 2002. I examine the ways in which participants try to achieve privacy as they pursue the principle of “selective disclosure and concealment.” I suggest that the affordance of such selectivity may be a key …

Comparison Of Solar Hot Water Systems Simulated In Energygauge Usa And Trnsys 15, Florida Solar Energy Center, Michael Anello Nov 2006

Comparison Of Solar Hot Water Systems Simulated In Energygauge Usa And Trnsys 15, Florida Solar Energy Center, Michael Anello

FSEC Energy Research Center®

This document is meant to serve as a detailed summary of the comparison between the simulation methods of EnergyGauge USA and TRNSYS (version 15) relating to solar hot water systems. The initial motivation behind this comparison was to verify that the f-chart model created for EnergyGauge's solar hot water calculations was reporting the correct results. To this end, models of three systems were created in TRNSYS in order to serve as a baseline for the EnergyGauge results. The three systems modeled were: Liquid-active closed loop (LACL), Liquid-active open loop (LAOL), Integrated collector storage (ICS). This document will detail each of …

Race, Colorblindness, And Continental Philosophy, Michael Monahan Nov 2006

Race, Colorblindness, And Continental Philosophy, Michael Monahan

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

The "colorblind" society is often offered as a worthy ideal for individual interaction as well as public policy. The ethos of liberal democracy would seem indeed to demand that we comport ourselves in a manner completely indifferent to race (and class, and gender, and so on). But is this ideal of colorblindness capable of fulfillment? And whether it is or not, is it truly a worthy political goal? In order to address these questions, one must first explore the nature of "race" itself. Is it ultimately real, or merely an illusion? What kind of reality, if any, does it have, …

The position effect variegation in Drosophila and Schizosaccharomyces pombe, and higher-order chromatin structure regulation in yeast, is orchestrated by modifier genes of the Su(var) group, (e.g., histone deacetylases ([HDACs]), protein phosphatases) and enhancer E(Var) group (e.g., ATP [adenosine 5'-triphosphate]-dependent nucleosome remodeling proteins). Higher-order chromatin structure is regulated in part by covalent modification of the N-terminal histone tails of chromatin, and histone tails in turn serve as platforms for recruitment of signaling modules that include nonhistone proteins such as heterochromatin protein (HP1) and NuRD. Because the enzymes governing chromatin structure through covalent modifications of histones (acetylation, methylation, phosphorylation, ubiquitination) can also …

Informing Teacher Education Through Cross-Cultural Teaching And Learning: Dialogic Inquiry Into Japanese And Canadian School Experiences, Mitsuyo Sakamoto, Elaine Chan Nov 2006

Informing Teacher Education Through Cross-Cultural Teaching And Learning: Dialogic Inquiry Into Japanese And Canadian School Experiences, Mitsuyo Sakamoto, Elaine Chan

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This article examines the hermeneutic, narrative, and social co-construction of cultural understanding as two educators shared their teaching and learning experiences in Japanese and Canadian schools. Our dialogic inquiry reveals how perceptions of practices in one culture—including curricula in non-core, academic subjects, stances on student assessment, and attitudes toward extracurricular activities—were shaped by our prior school experiences. The study reveals that reconstruction of previous overseas experience and co-construction of meaning from this reconstruction can serve as a powerful means of enhancing understanding of cross-cultural issues. The reconstruction process also offers a means of engaging those who do not have international, …

An Examination Of The Determinants And Contents Of Corporate Voluntary Disclosure Of Management's Responsibilities For Financial Reporting, Samir M. El-Gazzar, James M. Fornaro, Rudy A. Jacob Nov 2006

An Examination Of The Determinants And Contents Of Corporate Voluntary Disclosure Of Management's Responsibilities For Financial Reporting, Samir M. El-Gazzar, James M. Fornaro, Rudy A. Jacob

Faculty Working Papers and Articles

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act (S-O Act) of 2002 requires principal officers to certify under oath to the veracity of information contained in SEC filings and opine on the effectiveness of the internal control system. This study examines the determinants and contents of corporate voluntary disclosure of management's responsibilities during the five-year period preceding the S-O Act. We predict that the voluntary disclosure of management's responsibilities for financial information signals certain incentives and characteristics of the reporting firm that are relevant to financial statement users and regulators. Consistent with our predictions, our findings reveal significant differences between issuing and non-issuing firms as …

The Role Of Training Variables In Effective Dissemination Of Evidence-Based Parenting Interventions, Alexandra C. Seng, Ronald J. Prinz, Matthew R. Sanders Nov 2006

The Role Of Training Variables In Effective Dissemination Of Evidence-Based Parenting Interventions, Alexandra C. Seng, Ronald J. Prinz, Matthew R. Sanders

Faculty Publications

From a public health perspective, mental health in parents and children can be promoted through population-based dissemination of parenting and family support interventions. However, it is critical that service providers who are acquiring evidence-based parenting interventions complete the training regimen to optimize dissemination and impact. This article examines training completion and its relationship to individual service provider characteristics, barriers to program use and subsequent implementation of an evidence-based program, the Triple P - Positive Parenting Program. In this study, 83.7% of the service providers completed the two-part training. Individual-level variables did not predict training completion. Service providers from diverse backgrounds …

Atomistic Simulations Of Long-Range Strain And Spatial Asymmetry Molecular States Of Seven Quantum Dots, Marek Korkusinski, Gerhard Klimeck Nov 2006

Atomistic Simulations Of Long-Range Strain And Spatial Asymmetry Molecular States Of Seven Quantum Dots, Marek Korkusinski, Gerhard Klimeck

Other Nanotechnology Publications

Coherent coupling and formation of molecular orbitals in vertically coupled quantum-dot molecules is studied for a seven-dot InAs/GaAs system. The electron states are computed using a nanoelectronic modelling tool NEMO-3D. The tool optimizes atomic positions in the sample with up to 64 million atoms in the frame of the atomistic VFF model. The resulting optimal interatomic distances are then used to formulate the 20-band sp3d5s* tight-binding Hamiltonian defined on a subdomain large enough to guarantee a correct treatment of confined orbitals. It is found that in the absence of strain (VFF optimization turned off), a clear and highly symmetric miniband …

Perceptions Of Latin American Immigration Among Rural Nebraskans, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell, Miguel A. Carranza, Bruce B. Johnson, Alan J. Tomkins Nov 2006

Perceptions Of Latin American Immigration Among Rural Nebraskans, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell, Miguel A. Carranza, Bruce B. Johnson, Alan J. Tomkins

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

In an earlier Nebraska Rural Poll report (August 2006), rural Nebraskans were asked their opinions of newcomers in general to their community. Some parts of rural Nebraska have seen significant growth of a specific group of newcomers, Latin American immigrants. How do rural Nebraskans view recent immigrants from Latin America? How do they view various immigration policies? Do their views differ by community size, the region in which they live, or their education level?

This report details 2,482 responses to the 2006 Nebraska Rural Poll, the eleventh annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions of current issues and conditions. Respondents …
