Characterization Of Hsp70 Binding And Nucleotide Exchange By The Yeast Hsp110 Chaperone Sse1, Lance Shaner, Rui Sousa, Kevin A Morano Dec 2006

Characterization Of Hsp70 Binding And Nucleotide Exchange By The Yeast Hsp110 Chaperone Sse1, Lance Shaner, Rui Sousa, Kevin A Morano

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

SSE1 and SSE2 encode the essential yeast members of the Hsp70-related Hsp110 molecular chaperone family. Both mammalian Hsp110 and the Sse proteins functionally interact with cognate cytosolic Hsp70s as nucleotide exchange factors. We demonstrate here that Sse1 forms high-affinity (Kd approximately 10-8 M) heterodimeric complexes with both yeast Ssa and mammalian Hsp70 chaperones and that binding of ATP to Sse1 is required for binding to Hsp70s. Sse1.Hsp70 heterodimerization confers resistance to exogenously added protease, indicative of conformational changes in Sse1 resulting in a more compact structure. The nucleotide binding domains of both Sse1/2 and the Hsp70s dictate interaction specificity and …

The Un: A Situation Report, Benjamin Zawacki Dec 2006

The Un: A Situation Report, Benjamin Zawacki

ExpressO

The UN: A Situation Report is a review of two recent books on the past, present, and future of the UN; in short, of its relevance in a changing and uni-polar world at the end of Kofi Annan’s two terms as Secretary-General. The books’ focus is both on the organization’s successes and failures, and its efforts at self-reform in the face of near-constant criticism. They are reviewed as individually divergent in quality but as a formidable “situation report” when read in tandem. Paul Kennedy’s The Parliament of Man, save for its first of three parts, is generally criticized for its …

Earnings Quality From A Methodological Perspective, Rafał Cieślik Dec 2006

Earnings Quality From A Methodological Perspective, Rafał Cieślik

European Management Studies

In the post-Enron period the term of 'earnings quality' has been widely discussed in the context of white-collar crime, frauds committed upon producing financial reports, financial result manipulations, the scope of disclosed information (public and private), and the general credibility of the data provided for in a financial report. An element of analyzing the financial standing of an economic entity becomes essential, since it determines the extent to which the generated profit is usable in making economic decisions. It provides for the information on the range in which the profit presented in the financial report coincides with the actual result, …

The Coefficient Of Bohm Diffusion In Fully Ionized Plasma And Its Theoretical Proof, Ahmad Talaei, Reza Amrollahi

Graduate Student Presentations

As we know, the classical diffusion can not be able to respond the experimental results of the diffusion in the fully ionized and isothermal plasma. In this article, we purpose to extract the empirical coefficients of the Bohm diffusion and its confinement time, theoretically, in the fully ionized plasma, using the single fluid MHD equations.

Re-Examining The Politics Of U.S. Intervention In Early 20th Century Nicaragua: José Madriz And The Conservative Restoration, Yann Kerevel Dec 2006

Re-Examining The Politics Of U.S. Intervention In Early 20th Century Nicaragua: José Madriz And The Conservative Restoration, Yann Kerevel

Research Papers

This research re-examines the U.S. intervention in Nicaragua in 1909-10. Most literature of this period argues that the United States forced the dictator Zelaya out of office in 1909; however, I contend that the argument that U.S. intervention caused the fall of Zelaya does not clearly match up to the historical record. Instead, I argue it is much more compelling to examine U.S. policy toward José Madriz to understand the impact of the intervention. It is clear that U.S. policy was the decisive factor in the fall of Madriz, while it is less convincing in the case of Zelaya.

Mammalian antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are effectors of the innate immune response. A multitude of signals coming from pathways of mammalian pathogen/pattern recognition receptors and other proteins affect the expression of AMP-coding genes (AMPcgs). For many AMPcgs the promoter elements and transcription factors that control their tissue cell-specific expression have yet to be fully identified and characterized. Results- Based upon the RIKEN full-length cDNA and public sequence data derived from human, mouse and rat, we identified 178 candidate AMP transcripts derived from 61 genes belonging to 29 AMP families. However, only for 31 mouse genes belonging to 22 AMP families we …

Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In 1998, the Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNet), Asia's oldest bioinformatics organisation was set up to champion the advancement of bioinformatics in the Asia Pacific. By 2002, APBioNet was able to gain sufficient critical mass to initiate the first International Conference on Bioinformatics (InCoB) bringing together scientists working in the field of bioinformatics in the region. This year, the InCoB2006 Conference was organized as the 5th annual conference of the Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Network, on Dec. 18–20, 2006 in New Delhi, India, following a series of successful events in Bangkok (Thailand), Penang (Malaysia), Auckland (New Zealand) and Busan (South Korea). …

Incorporation Of Capillary-Channeled Polymer (C-Cp) Fibers Into Micropipette Tips For Solid Phase Extraction With Applications In Bioanalysis, Donald Fornea

All Theses

Solid phase extraction (SPE), is a widely used sample preparation method that is currently experiencing a surge in research interest, clever architecture/format development, and stationary phase characterization.1-3 SPE devices commonly exist in syringe, cartridge, disk, and micropipette tip formats.4 Micropipette tip SPE has enhanced the determination of proteins by electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) by handling micro-liter volumes of sample and buffer removal/solvent exchange.5-7 Buffers have deleterious effects on ionization taking place in MS sources due to preferential ionization, ion suppression effects, and the formation of adduct species competing for ionization in …
