Perspectives Of Mentors And Mentees Involved In A Special Education Resident Teacher Program, Michelle Landsem Griffin Nov 2006

Perspectives Of Mentors And Mentees Involved In A Special Education Resident Teacher Program, Michelle Landsem Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions of three resident teacher/resident mentor pairs in a special education resident teacher program located in a rural Midwest state. The intent of this study was to gain insight into the phenomenon of mentoring as perceived by the resident teachers and resident mentors. Qualitative research methods were used in this phenomenological study, including a brief period of observation, analysis of meeting notes and resident mentor/resident teacher evaluations, and interviews with the three resident mentors and three resident teachers involved in a special education resident teacher program. Data obtained from each participant's …

Bacterial Persistence In Escherichia Coli: Examination Of The Role Of Hipba, Shaleen B. Korch Nov 2006

Bacterial Persistence In Escherichia Coli: Examination Of The Role Of Hipba, Shaleen B. Korch

Theses and Dissertations

Persistence is the ability of a small fraction of bacteria (one-in-a-million) to survive antibiotic exposure, yet the survivors are as susceptible to antibiotic as the parental cells. "High persistence" in Escherichia coli is linked to mutations in hipA, the toxin entity of the toxin-antitoxin module hipBA. The wild type hipA gene encodes a "toxin" while hipB encodes a DNA-binding protein that autoregulates hip operon expression and binds to HipA to nullify its effects. The hipA7 allele confers persistence to 1:100 cells and serves as a model system to study persistence. Wild-type HipA, when in excess of HipB, causes culture growth …

Regulation Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Actin Polymerization: Pathophysiological Implications And Relations To Portal Hypertensive Conditions, Xuesong Chen Nov 2006

Regulation Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Actin Polymerization: Pathophysiological Implications And Relations To Portal Hypertensive Conditions, Xuesong Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Chronic portal hypertension is an end-state clinical condition associated with cirrhosis and other diseases that elevate portal vascular resistance. An intriguing vascular consequence of chronic portal hypertension is impaired vasoconstrictor function which favors a chronically vasodilated condition. This vasoconstrictor dysfunction has been linked to prolonged activation of protein kinase A (PKA). However the cellular mechanism(s) responsible for the altered vasoconstrictor function is still not clear. The present studies tested my hypothesis that PKA mediates impaired vasoconstrictor function by affecting the actin filament dynamics via two small heat shock proteins, HSP20 and HSP27. Studies were conducted in isolated small mesenteric arteries …

Contingent Fee Lobbying: Inflaming Avarice Or Facilitating Constitutional Rights?, Thomas M. Susman Nov 2006

Contingent Fee Lobbying: Inflaming Avarice Or Facilitating Constitutional Rights?, Thomas M. Susman

ExpressO

Contingent fee lobbying has long been a disfavored practice. Although some commentators argue that use of a contingent fee lobbying contract could open up federal legislative and regulatory processes to greater participation by Americans of limited means, many others, including the Supreme Court, have declared that lobbying a legislature or agency under a contingent fee contract is generally both illegal and unethical. However, the conclusion that the practice is illegal is often based on a declaration that the practice is unethical . . . without a thorough examination of the sources of law that led to the presumption of illegality …

Teilhard And The Future Of Humanity, Thierry Meynard, S.J. Nov 2006

Teilhard And The Future Of Humanity, Thierry Meynard, S.J.

Religion

Fifty years after his death, the thought of the French scientist and Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin (1881–1955) continues to inspire new ways of understanding humanity’s future. Trained as a paleontologist and philosopher, Teilhard was an innovative synthesizer of science and religion, developing an idea of evolution as an unfolding of material and mental worlds into an integrated, holistic universe at what he called the Omega Point. His books, such as the bestselling The Phenomenon of Man, have influenced generations of ecologists, environmentalists, planners, and others concerned with the fate of the earth.

This book brings together original essays …

Nclb Technology And A Rural School: A Case Study, Theresa A. Cullen, Thomas A. Brush, Timothy J. Frey, Rebecca S. Hinshaw, Scott J. Warren

Faculty Publications - Curriculum & Instruction

The requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) have presented special challenges and opportunities for rural schools (Reeves, 2003). Researchers have suggested that one way rural schools may be able to overcome these challenges is through an increase in the level of technology integration in their school (Collins & Dewees, 2001). This case study reports on one school’s attempt to use grant resources funded through NCLB to integrate specific instructional technologies to facilitate increased student achievement. Through interviews and observations, the roles, attitudes, and difficulties of teachers and administrators in implementing a technology initiative in a …

We present the first statistically meaningful results from two-Ks0 interferometry in heavy-ion collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. A model that takes the effect of the strong interaction into account has been used to fit the measured correlation function. The effects of single and coupled channels were explored. At the mean transverse mass ⟨mT⟩ = 1.07 GeV, we obtain the values R = 4.09±0.46(stat)±0.31(sys) fm and λ=0.92±0.23(stat)±0.13(sys), where R and λ are the invariant radius and chaoticity parameters, respectively. The results are qualitatively consistent with mT systematics established with pions in …

Early Childhood Education : Pathways To Quality And Equity For All Children, Alison Elliott

Australian Education Review

AER 50 calls for a coherent, long-term national action plan and timeline to develop and implement an integrated, well-funded, regulated and managed system of early childhood education and care with clear goals, priorities and outcomes. The review describes the current provision of early childhood services in Australia and examines relevant policy. It also provides an overview of the early childhood education research, in Australia and internationally, and uses this body of work to identify and illuminate the central issues.

Effect Of Soy Isoflavone Protein And Soy Lecithin On Endothelial Function In Healthy Postmenopausal Women, Mary Pearson Nov 2006

Effect Of Soy Isoflavone Protein And Soy Lecithin On Endothelial Function In Healthy Postmenopausal Women, Mary Pearson

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of soy isoflavone protein concentrate and soy lecithin on endothelial function measured as flow mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery in healthy postmenopausal women. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled crossover trial, twenty-five subjects (mean age 61 years; BMI 25.46 kg/m2) were recruited from the general population of southwestern Connecticut. Subjects underwent endothelial function testing using high frequency ultrasound at baseline and following 4 weeks of each randomly assigned treatment with intervening 4-week washout periods. Treatment assignment included: soy isoflavone protein (SP, 25gm/day) or soy lecithin (SL, 20gm/day) alone …

Social Influences On Academic Motivation In Early Elementary School Students, Jenli Waters

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The goal of this research is to identify correlations between academic intrinsic motivation and exposures to academic activities within the home acknowledged by young children (5 to 8 years old). This study hopes to clarify relationship between academic intrinsic motivation and exposure to positive role modeling of academic activities in young children. Much of the data was collected by interview-style surveys conducted with a sample of 18 boys and girls of ages between 5 and 8 years. The Child-Reported Home Reading and Math Exposure Questionnaire (HEQ) was developed by the author for this study to assess the extent to which …

The Effects Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder On Pregnancy Outcomes, Shari Rogal Nov 2006

The Effects Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder On Pregnancy Outcomes, Shari Rogal

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), diagnosed prospectively during pregnancy, on the occurrence of low birthweight (<2500 grams) and preterm delivery (<37 weeks gestational age). A cohort of 1362 women was recruited from prenatal care visits and screened for depression, panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and substance use. Current episodes of PTSD were assessed using the MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Pregnancy outcomes were abstracted from hospital records after delivery, and the data were analyzed using logistic regression. Two hundred sixty two women (33%) were lost to follow-up due to unavailable medical records, leaving 1100 women in the final analyses. Among these 1100 women, 31 (3%) were found to have PTSD during pregnancy. Substance use in pregnancy, panic disorder, major and minor depressive disorders, and prior preterm delivery were significantly associated with PTSD in the sample, while age, language spoken, and race were not. Low birthweight (LBW) was present in 6.5% of sampled women and was not significantly associated with a diagnosis of PTSD in pregnancy when adjusting for potential confounders. However, LBW was significantly associated with minor depressive disorder OR= 1.82 (CI=1.01, 3.29). Preterm delivery occurred in 7.0% of those without and 16.1% of those with PTSD (p=0.055). Because prior preterm delivery data were not available for 33% of women with PTSD, this variable was included only in secondary analyses. However, the association between PTSD and preterm delivery depended on this variable, with OR= 2.82 (0.95, 8.38) before controlling for prior preterm delivery and OR=3.35 (1.04, 10.85) after controlling for prior preterm delivery. These data suggest that a possible association of PTSD and preterm delivery was limited by the low rates of PTSD in this cohort and the inability to control for all confounders. Taken together, these findings provide limited support for the hypothesized association between PTSD and preterm delivery and no support for an association of PTSD with LBW.

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Estrogen is well-known to be protective against cardiovascular disease in women. In addition to improving lipid metabolism, it also decreases vascular resistance and enhances vascular reflexes, thereby improving vasomotor stability and increasing the arterial capacity for dilatation. Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) has demonstrated these changes in research trials, and is emerging as having potential application in many clinical and surgical situations. In this study, our aim was to examine the impact of estrogen upon baseline blood flow as well as the response to vasodilatory interventions and to further evaluate the utility of laser Doppler as a clinical non-invasive measurement of …

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to examine the associations between maternal child-rearing experience, choice of infant sleeping position, and the source, nature and trust of advice received about infant sleeping position in a high-risk, primarily African-American population. Background: The number of deaths attributed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has decreased since the initiation of the Back to Sleep campaign in 1994. Although this change has benefited all ethnic groups, African-American infants are still twice as likely to succumb to SIDS as Caucasian infants. Design/Methods: We conducted 668 face-to-face standardized interviews with mothers of infants in Connecticut, Georgia …

Cellular Oxidative Efficiency: A New Approach To Calculating Theoretical P/O Ratios, Douglas Walled Nov 2006

Cellular Oxidative Efficiency: A New Approach To Calculating Theoretical P/O Ratios, Douglas Walled

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

For decades the oxidative efficiency of cellular metabolism has been under investigation. After numerous reports of varied stoichiometric measurements, consensus in the literature has begun moving toward two currently accepted theoretical P/O ratios (the number of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecules formed for every oxygen atom consumed): 2.5 for NADH-linked substrates and 1.5 for FADH2-linked substrates. It is shown here, however, that the currently accepted theoretical values are inappropriately calculated underestimates, and that P/O ratios of real biochemical systems are variable. The complete oxidative metabolism of glucose, beta-hydroxybutyrate, malate, pyruvate, and succinate, utilizing three different electron shuttles (or exclusive mitochondrial metabolism) …
