Bermudagrass In Kentucky, David C. Ditsch Nov 2006

Bermudagrass In Kentucky, David C. Ditsch

Kentucky Grazing Conference

Interest in bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers] is increasing in Kentucky as livestock producers continue their search for warm-season perennial forages capable of filling in the mid-summer growth slump we commonly experience with our traditional cool-season grasses. This is partially due to the recent availability of seeded bermudagrass varieties with improved winter hardiness thereby reducing establishment cost and increasing the odds of success.

Investigation Of De Novo Cholesterol Synthetic Capacity In The Gonads Of Goldfish (Carassius Auratus) Exposed To The Phytosterol Beta-Sitosterol, Rainie L. Sharpe, Melissa Drolet, Deborah L. Maclatchy Nov 2006

Investigation Of De Novo Cholesterol Synthetic Capacity In The Gonads Of Goldfish (Carassius Auratus) Exposed To The Phytosterol Beta-Sitosterol, Rainie L. Sharpe, Melissa Drolet, Deborah L. Maclatchy

Biology Faculty Publications

Total and intra-mitochondrial gonadal cholesterol concentrations are decreased in fish exposed to the phytoestrogen beta-sitosterol (beta-sit). The present study examined the potential for beta-sit to disrupt de novo cholesterol synthesis in the gonads of goldfish exposed to 200 microgram/g beta-sit and 10 microgram/g 17beta-estradiol (E2; estrogenic control) by intra-peritoneal Silastic® implants for 21 days. The de novo cholesterol synthetic capacity was estimated by incubating gonadal tissue with 14C-acetate for a period of 18 hours, followed by chloroform/methanol lipid extraction and thin layer chromatography (TLC) lipid separation. Lipid classes were confirmed using infrared spectroscopy. Plasma testosterone (T) and total cholesterol concentration …

A V. Tel-Aviv-Jaffa Regional Rabbinical Court, Aharon Barak, Esther Hayut, Miriam Naor Nov 2006

A V. Tel-Aviv-Jaffa Regional Rabbinical Court, Aharon Barak, Esther Hayut, Miriam Naor

Translated Opinions

Petition to the Supreme Court sitting as the High Court of Justice.

Facts: The petitioner and the third respondent are Jews who are Israeli citizens and residents. Although they were competent to marry in accordance with Jewish law, they chose to marry in a civil ceremony in Cyprus. The marriage subsequently broke down and after various proceedings in the rabbinical courts, the rabbinical court dissolved the marriage by means of a divorce decree. The petitioner petitioned the High Court of Justice. In her petition she argued that the rabbinical court acted unlawfully when it dissolved the civil marriage and the …

Ben-Ari V. Director Of Population Administration, Aharon Barak, Dorit Beinisch, Eliezer Rivlin, Ayala Procaccia, Miriam Naor, Esther Hayut, Elyakim Rubinstein

Translated Opinions

Facts: The petitioners are five same-sex couples of Israeli citizens who underwent ceremonies of marriage in Canada in accordance with Canadian law. Upon returning to Israel, they applied to the population registry to be registered as married. Their application was refused. They petitioned the court.

Held: (Majority opinion — President Emeritus Barak, President Beinisch, Vice-President Rivlin, Justices Procaccia, Naor, Hayut) Following the rule in Funk-Schlesinger v. Minister of Interior, that the purpose of the registry is merely statistical, the registration official at the population registry is not competent to examine the validity of a marriage. When he is presented with …

Steven Warshak v. United States of America

On appeal from the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio at Cincinnati

From the Summary of Argument

Electronic mail (“e-mail’) has become an essential medium of communication and assumed a vital role in our lives. The contents of our e-mail accounts reveal extensive and detailed information about our interests, our views, and our actions. Yet, the Government in this case claims the right to obtain the entirety of our personal e-mail accounts from our service providers, without first establishing probable cause or providing us notice, so long …

Emergence Of Primate Genes By Retrotransposon-Mediated Sequence Transduction, Jinchuan Xing, Hui Wang, Victoria P. Belancio, Richard Cordaux, Prescott L. Deininger, Mark A. Batzer Nov 2006

Emergence Of Primate Genes By Retrotransposon-Mediated Sequence Transduction, Jinchuan Xing, Hui Wang, Victoria P. Belancio, Richard Cordaux, Prescott L. Deininger, Mark A. Batzer

Faculty Publications

Gene duplication is one of the most important mechanisms for creating new genes and generating genomic novelty. Retrotransposon-mediated sequence transduction (i.e., the process by which a retrotransposon carries flanking sequence during its mobilization) has been proposed as a gene duplication mechanism. L1 exon shuffling potential has been reported in cell culture assays, and two potential L1-mediated exon shuffling events have been identified in the genome. SVA is the youngest retrotransposon family in primates and is capable of 3′ flanking sequence transduction during retrotransposition. In this study, we examined all of the full-length SVA elements in the human genome to assess …
