(2006) Changing Conceptions Of The Child From The Renaissance To Post-Modernity: A Philosophy Of Childhood, David Kennedy Jan 2006

(2006) Changing Conceptions Of The Child From The Renaissance To Post-Modernity: A Philosophy Of Childhood, David Kennedy

Collected Papers of David Kennedy

In the eight essays that make up this volume David Kennedy offers provocative insights into what it means, has meant, and might mean in the future, to be a child. As we read him we feel the excitement of discovering truths that we want to think we knew all along. This book includes six essays on images of childhood and two extended reports on philosophical discussions he had with two groups of children. In each of those two reports on children’s thinking Kennedy interpolates his own reflections on the topics being discussed, on the methodology he is using, and on …

Next Year In Jerusalem: A 21st Century, Medieval Pilgrimage Site, Mark Fafard

All Volumes (2001-2008)

American Protestantism is generally regarded as scripturalist and lacking in such features as Passion plays and pilgrimage. The Holy Land Experience is an Orlando based Christian attraction that includes characteristics of both modern and medieval pilgrimage sites. In addition to the publicized Christian theme, an underlying yet equal message of Jewish heritage is pronounced within several of the park’s attributes. One dimension of this is that it serves as a substitutional pilgrimage; that is, an alternative to traveling to war torn Israel. This ethnography provides an emic perspective of the Holy Land Experience to hypothesize that it is a Christian …

Survey On Study Abroad: Data From 600 Unf Freshmen, Emma Glencross, Lisa E. Wills

All Volumes (2001-2008)

In light of the known benefits and the increasing importance of an international study experience, the UNF International Center has been investigating and offering more opportunities for Study Abroad. In the fall of 2004, the Director of the International Center, Dr. Tim Robinson, wished to investigate the level of interest of UNF freshman and sophomore students in studying abroad. He had the idea of conducting a survey to learn more about their previous experiences abroad and their attitudes towards Study Abroad Courses. Dominik Güss and Emma Glencross developed a first draft of the survey. Upon modification, a final survey was …

Federal Funds Target Rate Changes And Sector Equity Returns, Michael King, Scott Martin Jan 2006

Federal Funds Target Rate Changes And Sector Equity Returns, Michael King, Scott Martin

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how equities of nine individual economic sectors are affected when monetary policy announcements in the form of federal funds rate changes are made over the period January 1, 1999 to May 11, 2005. This sector-analysis is conducted over a recent time period, when the Federal Open Market Committee has adopted a policy of immediate disclosure of its federal funds target rate changes. Our results indicate that the Consumer Discretionary and Technology sectors’ equity returns are negatively and significantly related to changes in the federal funds target rate. This negative relationship appears to …

Emotions And Actions Associated With Altruistic Helping And Punishment, Omar Tonsi Eldakar, David Sloan Wilson, Rick O'Gorman Jan 2006

Emotions And Actions Associated With Altruistic Helping And Punishment, Omar Tonsi Eldakar, David Sloan Wilson, Rick O'Gorman

Biology Faculty Articles

Evolutionary altruism (defined in terms of fitness effects) exists in the context of punishment in addition to helping. We examine the proximate psychological mechanisms that motivate altruistic helping and punishment, including the effects of genetic relatedness, potential for future interactions, and individual differences in propensity to help and punish. A cheater who is a genetic relative provokes a stronger emotional reaction than a cheater who is a stranger, but the behavioral response is modulated to avoid making the transgression public in the case of cheating relatives. Numerous behavioral differences are not accompanied by emotional differences, suggesting that other psychological mechanisms …

A Psychology Of Emotional Legal Decision Making: Revulsion And Saving Face In Legal Theory And Practice, Peter H. Huang, Christopher J. Anderson

Publications

Professor Martha C. Nussbaum is an accomplished scholar in an impressive variety of fields. Drawing on her diverse academic backgrounds, Nussbaum has written extensively about emotions and their importance for law from the perspective of her primary specialty, philosophy. Her book Hiding from Humanity criticizes the roles that two particular emotions, disgust and shame, play in the law. Its central thesis is that, as legal actors, we should be wary of disgust and shame because indulging in those emotions allows us to hide from our humanity - both our humanity in the general sense and also those specific features of …

Cross-Cultural Differences In The Perception Of Group Entitativity And Autonomy, Koichi Kurebayashi Jan 2006

Cross-Cultural Differences In The Perception Of Group Entitativity And Autonomy, Koichi Kurebayashi

Student Work

This research examined cross-cultural differences in group perceptions. Specifically, it examined the relative importance of the properties underlying perceived entitativity and the influence of entitativity on group autonomy beliefs among American and Japanese college students. Group properties were divided into two categories: essence properties and dynamic properties. Essence properties included similarities in group members’ physical characteristics, background, and personality traits. Dynamic properties included commonality in goals, outcomes, and cooperation among members. It was found that both American and Japanese people’s perceptions of entitativity were higher when essence and dynamic properties were high. However, essence properties were more strongly related to …

The Notion Of Trust As A Comprehensive Theory Of Contract And Corporate Law: A New Approach To The Conception That The Corporation Is A Nexus Of Contract, Eli Bukspan Jan 2006

The Notion Of Trust As A Comprehensive Theory Of Contract And Corporate Law: A New Approach To The Conception That The Corporation Is A Nexus Of Contract, Eli Bukspan

UC Law Business Journal

The concept of trust-- the fulfillment of promises both express and implied-- is at the heart of our social and economic lives. Without it, the simplest of daily interactions would be unduly burdensome, if not impossible altogether. The author offers trust as a comprehensive theory of contract law, which does not merely compel compliance, but encourages it as an expressive and self-reinforcing value. Using recent watershed opinions from the Israeli Supreme Court, the author demonstrates how the good faith principle of contract law can be extended to broader corporate conduct, strengthening a culture of trust. As corporate actions and individual …

The Public-Private Security Partnership: Counterterrorism Considerations For Employers In A Post-9/11 World, Andrew P. Morriss Jan 2006

The Public-Private Security Partnership: Counterterrorism Considerations For Employers In A Post-9/11 World, Andrew P. Morriss

UC Law Business Journal

Employers who employ both Americans and non-citizens in America, as well as those who employ either Americans or non-citizens overseas, will face a wide range of demands for cooperation with counterterror agencies, choices about employment policies that affect counterterror efforts, and concerns by employees about the impact of counterterror measures on their employment. This Article surveys some of the less immediately obvious issues that employers need to consider in adjusting to the post-9/1 1 environment-an environment in which counter-terror operations have become the nation's highest government priority.

Meeting The Federal Mandates: Research On Effective Reading Instructional Programs And Implications For Classroom Teachers, Sekhar Pindiprolu, David Forbush, Lori J. Marks

ETSU Faculty Works

Both the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) mandate (2001) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) (2004), call for use of scientifically validated reading instructional practices, curricula, and accountability for successful learning outcomes. This paper highlights one of the reading programs identified as scientifically validated by independent research groups and discusses its implications for classroom teachers. On the other hand, we do not embrace the idea that other reading programs are ineffective. We believe that there is no one single method or program to teach all children effectively. However, we believe that use of programs that have been …

Private Enforcement Of The Americans With Disabilities Act Via Serial Litigation: Abusive Or Commendable?, Carri Becker Jan 2006

Private Enforcement Of The Americans With Disabilities Act Via Serial Litigation: Abusive Or Commendable?, Carri Becker

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA") was developed to provide disabled persons with access to public businesses, buildings, and other accommodations. For a variety of reasons, very few public accommodations comply with the detailed accessibility standards imposed by Title III. As a result a cottage industry has developed of private plaintiffs suing for accessibility. This Note discusses the proliferation of these suits, especially by so called serial plaintiffs who file hundreds of lawsuits per year. A history of legislative attempts to curtail these suits is provided as well as suggestions for future legislative efforts that will both …

Getting Away With Murder: Guatemala's Failure To Protect Women And Rodi Alvarado's Quest For Saftey, Angelica Chazaro, Jennifer Casey

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

A decade after the 1996 Peace Accords that marked the end of the 36-year internal armed conflict, Guatemala fails to provide basic protection of women's human rights. The plight of asylumseeker Rodi Alvarado and the spiked increase in the murders of Guatemalan women ("femicides") highlight the scope of Guatemala's lack of protection for women. After suffering ten years of brutal domestic violence, with the authorities ignoring her pleas for protection, Rodi fled Guatemala, seeking asylum in the United States. She is not alone in her suffering. Since 2001, over 1,500 women have been murdered in Guatemala, with the perpetrators enjoying …

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Context—Comorbid severe mental health problems complicating intellectual disability are a common and costly public health problem. Although these problems are known to begin in early childhood, little is known of how they evolve over time or whether they continue into adulthood.

Objective—To study the course of psychopathology in a representative population of children and adolescents with intellectual disability.

Design, Setting, and Participants—The participants of the Australian Child to Adult Development Study, an epidemiological cohort of 578 children and adolescents recruited in 1991 from health, education, and family agencies that provided services to children with intellectual disability aged 5 to 19.5 …

Predictors Of Sexual Attitudes In College Students, Andrew Davisson Jan 2006

Predictors Of Sexual Attitudes In College Students, Andrew Davisson

Honors Theses

History, especially within the last century, has been host to steadily evolving attitudes toward human sexuality. In conjunction with these evolving attitudes have come changes in beliefs about sexual gender roles, the acceptance of homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle, and connections between self-esteem and sexual well-being. This study examined the relationships of four predictor variables (gender, attitudes toward women's issues, attitudes toward homosexuality, and self-esteem) with general sexual attitudes. An ANOVA showed that there was no significant difference between males and females in their sexual attitudes. Attitudes toward women and attitudes toward homosexuals were both significantly correlated with general sexual …

Co-Rumination And Depression In College Students, Maurita M. Burns Jan 2006

Co-Rumination And Depression In College Students, Maurita M. Burns

Honors Theses

Studies concerning depression consistently reveal higher levels in women than men. One explanation for this is that women and men cope with depressive emotions differently. While women tend to focus on their negative emotions and the causes and consequences of these feelings, men are more likely to engage in distracting, active behavior. The persistent self focus on negative emotions, rumination, has been found to prolong and exacerbate feelings of depression (Nolen-Hoeksema, 1991). At the same time, women tend to have more intimate and close friendships characterized by self-disclosure than men. While such intimate relationships theoretically provide social support that can …

Political Differentiation In Consumer Preferences For Underdog Businesses : Does Everybody Love A Winner?, Kelly O'Connor Jan 2006

Political Differentiation In Consumer Preferences For Underdog Businesses : Does Everybody Love A Winner?, Kelly O'Connor

Honors Theses

In an exploratory study of the intersection between the worlds of social behavior and personal economics, this experiment will examine the links between political ideology and consumer preference for an ''underdog" business. The stereotypical image of the Mom and Pop comer store is romantic, but when we juxtapose this sentiment with the convenience and predictability of shopping at a giant retailer, it is unclear which store consumers will prefer, and why. This study tested the hypothesis that individuals with more liberal political orientations will be more likely to exhibit a preference for underdog businesses than individuals with conservative political leanings, …

American Travelers In Palestine : Origins Of Holy Land Discourse In Nineteeth-Century America, Matthew R. Scutari Jan 2006

American Travelers In Palestine : Origins Of Holy Land Discourse In Nineteeth-Century America, Matthew R. Scutari

Honors Theses

Throughout the nineteenth century, American writers, journalists, explorers, and pilgrims traveled to the region then known as Palestine, publishing travel narratives upon their return to the U.S. Such narratives were wildly popular during this period, and the accounts of these travelers quickly made their way into the nation's collective consciousness. From personal libraries to Sunday school classrooms, their depictions of the Holy Land, which reflected a uniquely American biblical tradition, ultimately painted a picture of Palestine that closely conformed to popular preconceptions of what the Holy Land ought to be, stubbornly resisting contradiction and reinforcing stereotypes already held by many …
