Financial Decision-Making By University Of Northern Iowa Business Students, Steffany Mae Zabokrtsky Jan 2006

Financial Decision-Making By University Of Northern Iowa Business Students, Steffany Mae Zabokrtsky

Honors Program Theses

We continually need to make decisions, but it is clear that, in so doing, we do not act in accordance with strict rules of rationality. For example, the effect of framing (i.e. the choice of particular words to present a given set of facts) can influence our choices, which raises some serious questions about our real freedom of choice. An increasing body of literature on framing supports a tendency for people to take more risks when seeking to avoid losses as opposed to securing gains. This is explained by framing and the value function within Tversky and Kahneman's (1981) prospect …

A Modern Etiquette For A Modern Lady: A Feminist Critique, Jillian Marie Klean Zwilling Jan 2006

A Modern Etiquette For A Modern Lady: A Feminist Critique, Jillian Marie Klean Zwilling

Iowa Journal of Communication

This paper examines the text The Art and Power of Being a Lady (Clearly & Von Mueffling, 2001) to examine the "backlash" against feminism in the concept of modern manners manuals. A rhetorical criticism is conducted of the text to discover the identities that the authors are advocating for readers. This paper also explores how this identity relates to the concept of backlash. This paper argues that modern manners manuals contribute to, and are a product of, the backlash against feminism.

Reforming Rhetoric: Gender Equity, The American Association Of University Women, And The New White, Kim Golombisky Jan 2006

Reforming Rhetoric: Gender Equity, The American Association Of University Women, And The New White, Kim Golombisky

Iowa Journal of Communication

During the 1990s, the American Association of University Women tried to put gender equity back onto a U.S. education agenda that had rolled back equity programming during the 1980s and turned toward standards and testing in the 1990s. Conservatives labeled the AA UW radical feminists and argued black schoolboys represent the greatest at-a-risk student population, a logic that prioritized race over gender and boys over girls. Nonwhite non-Anglo women criticized the AA UW for glossing over differences among girls and women. In its 1998 Gender Gaps, the AA UW wrote a rhetorical alliance with its critics on the right and …

Adoption Consents: Legal Incentives For Best Practices, Elizabeth Samuels

All Faculty Scholarship

When a state places its legal imprimatur on the unmaking of one family and the making of another, the state should insure to the greatest extent possible that all the individuals involved have followed or have been afforded the best practices that ethics and humanity demand. The Uniform Adoption Act sets out commonly accepted goals of state adoption laws, among them the goals of protecting minor children against unnecessary separation from their birth parents and of ensuring that a decision by a birth parent to relinquish a minor child and consent to the childs adoption is informed and voluntary. With …

This research study was designed to examine and compare how community engagement knowledge of Program Administrators and Community Health Advisors (CHAs) can be shaped and affected by social capital and community capacity. This was achieved by analyzing the Congregations for Public Health’s Search Your Heart Program. The analysis used a three one-way fixed-effects ANOVA model, one for each of the three research questions. Property And Television, John G. Sprankling Jan 2006

Property And Television, John G. Sprankling

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

Property rights are-in large part-based on societal expectations. What shapes those expectations? One factor is television, our culture's most important medium of communication. The modern "reality show" may be particularly powerful in affecting the attitudes of viewers because it presents a model of "real life" behavior. This essay is the first legal scholarship to explore the relationship between television and property rights. It focuses on Survivor, the CBS program that chronicles the lives of "castaways" trying to survive in a tropical wilderness, where property is both scarce and vital. Survivor is a "reality show"-and one of the most successful programs …

Introduction To How Should We Talk About Religion?: Perspectives, Context And Particularities, James Boyd White

Other Publications

This book had its genesis in a faculty summer seminar held in the year 2000 at the University of Notre Dame, under the auspices of the Erasmus Institute. Our topic was the subject of the present book, which asks, as the title suggests, how we should talk about religion, especially in the languages of our various academic disciplines. The idea of the seminar was to collect a dozen people from very different fields and backgrounds, each of whom in his or her professional work has faced this question in a significant way. Each member of the seminar was responsible for …

A Three Part Study On The Relationship Between Retirement Planning And Health, Linda Christine Albert Jan 2006

A Three Part Study On The Relationship Between Retirement Planning And Health, Linda Christine Albert

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Researchers consistently conclude that finances and health are the two most significant factors associated with retirement decision-making and a successful retirement experience. Retirement planning is one mechanism by which individuals prepare for the retirement transition; however, retirement planning routinely emphasizes financial concerns, often to the exclusion of health or other significant aspects of retirement. Retirement planning is an increasingly relevant topic at a time when the population is aging, company-sponsored pensions and retiree benefits have diminished significantly, and reform is being sought for the long-standing social programs that have provided support for generations of older Americans. From a financial perspective, …

The Supreme Constitutional Court Of Egypt On Islamic Law, Veiling And Civil Rights: An Annotated Translation Of Supreme Constitutional Court Of Egypt Case No. 8 Of Judicial Year 17, Clark B. Lombardi, Nathan J. Brown

Articles

The jurisprudence of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt is creative and influential in the Arab world. Among its opinions, Case No. 8 of Judicial Year 17, decided on May 18, 1996, is particularly interesting. In this opinion, the SCC argues that a regulation on face-veiling in public schools is consistent not only with Islamic law, but with the Egyptian Constitution's guarantees of freedom of religion and freedom of expression. Not only does it illustrate the SCC's approach to Islamic legal reasoning, but it gives insight into the Court's views with respect to civil and political rights. The case also …
