The Influence Of Children's Gender And Behavior On Parental Perceptions, Virginia Lowery Dec 2006

The Influence Of Children's Gender And Behavior On Parental Perceptions, Virginia Lowery

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Parents' perceptions of children's behavior may vary depending on the gender of the child and the type of behavior displayed. It is important to delineate which factor(s) influence parental perceptions because parental perceptions directly influence whether or not parents respond to their children's behavior and how parents choose to manage the behavior. The present study examined how the gender of the child and the types of behaviors (internalizing vs. externalizing) the child displays affect parental perceptions regarding the severity of the behavior. One hundred and three parents of children ages 1 V2 to 5 years in the Southeast region of …

Deconstructing The Mock Trial, Harper Louden Dec 2006

Deconstructing The Mock Trial, Harper Louden

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Can juror bias be predicted after a thorough voir dire is conducted by a trained forensic psychologist? Most cases involve complex laws that require jurors to be more critical and thoughtful about their decisions and ultimately their verdicts. It is not enough to observe a jury pool and assess non-verbal cues. A trained trial consultant must have the psychological background to completely predict behavior of jurors based not only on non-verbal behaviors but also on socioeconomic, racial and gender factors as well as experience. All jurors are biased, but it is the trial consultant's duty to filter through those biases …

The Qingdao Twin Registry: A Focus On Chronic Disease Research, C. Anderson Johnson, Zengchang Pang, Feng Ning, Jennifer B. Unger, Shaojie Wang, Qian Guo, Weihua Cao, Liming Lee

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

With the changing patterns of morbidity and mortality in China, noncommunicable chronic diseases have become the major threats to the health of the Chinese population. The causes of chronic diseases include genetic factors and behavioral risk factors such as the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs, unhealthy dietary behaviors, and lack of physical activity. Twin studies offer a unique opportunity to disentangle the genetic and environmental risk and protective factors for chronic disease. The Qingdao Twin Registry (QTR) was initiated in 1998 as part of the National Chinese Twin Registry. Over 11,000 pairs of twins and multiples of all …

Young Children's Relationship With Nature, Randy White Dec 2006

Young Children's Relationship With Nature, Randy White

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Almost 150 years ago, nineteenth century psychologist Herbert Spencer published his book, Principals of Psychology, in which he espoused the "surplus energy theory," explaining that the main reason for children's play is to get rid of surplus energy. Although researchers and developmental theorists have rejected his theory, it has had an unfortunate and lasting influence on the design of children's outdoor play environments (Malone, 2003). As a result of Spencer's theory, playgrounds are seen as areas for physical play during recess, where children 'burn off steam,' and not for the other domains of development or for learning. In child care …

Examination Of The Relationship Between Parenting Styles And Parental Tolerance, Amanda Sowers Dec 2006

Examination Of The Relationship Between Parenting Styles And Parental Tolerance, Amanda Sowers

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Noncompliant behavior in children may be due to the developmental stage the child is going through, but persistent noncompliance can have long-term effects on the child ranging from academic problems to relationship problems (Forehand & Wierson, 1993; Kalb & Loeber, 2003). Parents' response to noncompliant behavior may be influenced by their parenting style. Parental tolerance is one factor that may differ among parenting styles. Parental tolerance can be defined by how annoyed the parent becomes by disruptive behavior displayed by children and the affect it has on the parent-child interaction (Brestan, Eyberg, Algina, Johnson, & Boggs, 2003). One new measure …

This is an investigation sought to identify developmentally appropriate teaching methods in drawing instruction. This study assessed the different methods in teaching the fundamentals of drawing to two groups of 5th grade classes at Our Lady of Las Vegas School in Las Vegas, Nevada. The "control" group was taught by the drawing methods presented by Edwards (1979), while the "experimental" group was taught employing standard methods. Their drawing skills were assessed using a rubric that measured their success in the following four dimensions of drawing: perspective, proportion, value and composition. The study utilized the pretest-posttest control group design (Leedy & …

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

We compared fMRI and cognitive data from nine hormone therapy (HT)-naive women with data from women exposed to either opposed conjugated equine estrogens (CEE) (n = 10) or opposed estradiol (n = 4). Exposure to either form of HT was associated with healthier fMRI response; however, CEE-exposed women exhibited poorer memory performance than either HT-naive or estradiol-exposed subjects. These preliminary findings emphasize the need to characterize differential neural effects of various HTs. ©2006AAN Enterprises, Inc.

Is industry classification important in explaining the amount of dollars invested in venture capital? This paper is motivatd by the reemerging importance of economic geography, and the recognition that industrial location is fundamental to understanding the field of economic geography. Videoconferencing In Immigration Proceedings, Aaron Haas Dec 2006

Videoconferencing In Immigration Proceedings, Aaron Haas

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “When there is mention of a legal trial, a certain picture naturally comes to mind. One sees a judge in his black robe sitting on a raised bench. Lawyers are stationed at tables on either side of the courtroom, prepared to present their arguments to the court. A jury box may sit off to the side, holding a cross-section of citizens culled from the population to perform their ancient duty. The courtroom is made of fine wood and polished marble, and it is adorned with the accouterments of justice—American flags, seals, paintings of honored jurists—which let an observer know …

Protecting Parent-Child Relationships: Determining Parental Rights Of Same-Sex Parents Consistently Despite Varying Recognition Of Their Relationship, Linda S. Anderson

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “The family and parental relationship appears secure as long as the members of the family stay within the borders of the states that recognize their relationship. What happens, though, when the family ventures beyond the borders of Vermont, Massachusetts, California, and Connecticut, has yet to be determined. Legislation in almost every other state has addressed whether each state will recognize the couples’ relationship,27 but no state has determined how it will treat the legal relationship between the children of these couples and their parents.28 This article will focus on the fragile legal relationship between same-sex parents and their children …

Design Of A One Day Workshop On Intuition, Alexander Von Reumont Dec 2006

Design Of A One Day Workshop On Intuition, Alexander Von Reumont

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

Intuition has been basically an untouched field in the domain of creativity research. I therefore wanted to investigate intuition in this study from scratch. I wanted to find out what laymen, as well as experts in the field of creativity knew about intuition, what their perceptions and expectations were, and what they wanted to know and learn about it in the future. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, to find rational explanations for intuition which support my hypothesis that it is a wildly neglected but natural and highly influential part of our intelligence. Second, to develop a one …

Retaining Information Technology Employees In Higher Education, Mary Holmes Dec 2006

Retaining Information Technology Employees In Higher Education, Mary Holmes

Dissertations

The retention of qualified Information Technology (IT) employees is at an all time low within higher education institutions. IT personnel are essential for higher education institutions to effectively integrate technology into their educational programs. These IT employees contribute to their institution's teaching/learning mission, while simultaneously supporting complex and highly visible administrative operations. Yet, all previous research regarding IT employee retention issues had only been conducted within corporate settings.

To examine factors related to IT employees' retention within public higher education, an internet-based study was sent to IT employees in all four-year public universities throughout Michigan. The survey included questions within …
