Determine Standard Levels Of Some Physical Abilities According To Youth Basketball Play Centers, Muhannad Abdul Sattar Abdul Hadi, Faris Sami Yousef
Modern Sport
Basketball, like other sports, is continuously progressing and evolving, thanks largely to advances in various scientific fields and scientific research aimed at achieving advanced results sought by many countries, including Iraq, at local, Arab, and international levels. Undoubtedly, the development of physical abilities in any sport depends on proper programming and planning of training curricula, which leads to the necessity of conducting regular tests. As Günter Blume pointed out, these tests serve as tools to motivate, excel, and sustain progress, providing accurate information that can be used for consistent evaluation, judgment, and guidance. The science of testing and measurement, alongside …

Predictive Test To Know The Level Of Speed Elongation And The Achievement Of Running 1500 Meters, Shaker Mahmoud Al-Sheikhli, Amer Fakhir, Israa Fouad Saleh
Modern Sport
In the field of sports, there are many phenomena that can be recognized or observed, and thus tested and measured to obtain objective results characterized by accuracy and reliability, provided they are used based on scientific principles. Tests and measurements are not merely tools to assess specific traits or levels, but rather to understand the relationships and correlations among these elements and traits. Therefore, they serve as evaluative tools for the physical, skillful, and psychological aspects of our athletes and teams by identifying correct treatments and solutions to avoid many shortcomings that coaches may encounter during training or when designing …

Handball Individual Defense Technical Performance Effectiveness Evaluation, Saad Mohsen Ismail, Mahmoud Mousa Al-Oqaili
Modern Sport
In competitive sports involving physical contact and the pursuit of scoring goals, both defense and offense hold equal importance for achieving victory. Specialists emphasize that teams whose members excel in defensive skills enhance the quality and appeal of the game. Unfortunately, defensive actions are often followed by spectators without much enthusiasm, and players usually see the defensive zone as a rest area after intense, aggressive attacks. Additionally, if a defender feels that committing a foul—whether obvious or subtle—will not result in a strict penalty, they may lack motivation to exert effort in training to master defensive skills. This is especially …

Mental Health And Substance Abuse Services Preferences Among American Indian People Of The Northern Midwest, Melissa Lynn Walls, Kurt D. Johnson, Les B. Whitbeck, Dan R. Hoyt
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This study examines factors that influence preferences between traditional cultural and western mental health and substance use associated care among American Indians from the northern Midwest. Personal interviews were conducted with 865 parents/caretakers of tribally enrolled youth concerning their preferences for traditional/cultural and formal healthcare for mental health or substance abuse problems. Adults strongly preferred traditional informal services to formal medical services. In addition, formal services on reservation were preferred to off reservation services. To better serve the mental health and substance abuse treatment needs of American Indians, traditional informal services should be incorporated into the current medical model.

Dancing Through Film Musicals: Narratives In Motion, Dara Phillips
Dancing Through Film Musicals: Narratives In Motion, Dara Phillips
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to discover if and how dance communicates vital plot and character information nonverbally. The example analyzed was the film Singin’ in the Rain. This thesis examined the six dance sequences in the film to determine if the dancing is an integral, powerful, and significant communicative addition to the film. Walter Fisher’s Narrative Paradigm was used in conjunction with Seymour Chatman’s concept of kernels and satellites to determine if the dances communicated significantly to the film’s viewers. The Narrative Paradigm, though loosely framed, provided the concepts of coherence and fidelity. These concepts helped determine if …

This research seeks to understand how knowledge, access, and utilization of health care resources are obtained by residents in one South Carolina upstate county. In particular, whites and minorities living in rural parts of Anderson County are studied in an effort to address issues of barriers that obstruct the ability to obtain knowledge, access, and utilization of health care resources. A primary objective of this research is to determine whether or not knowledge of health care resources is a result of previously using them. In other words, are individuals knowledgeable about available health care resources before they become ill? It …

Lehmann Family Of Roc Curves, Mithat Gonen, Glenn Heller
Lehmann Family Of Roc Curves, Mithat Gonen, Glenn Heller
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are useful in evaluating the ability of a continuous marker in discriminating between the two states of a binary outcome such as diseased/not diseased. The most popular parametric model for an ROC curve is the binormal model which assumes that the marker is normally distributed conditional on the outcome. Here we present an alternative to the binormal model based on the Lehmann family, also known as the proportional hazards specification. The resulting ROC curve and its functionals (such as the area under the curve) have simple analytic forms. We derive closed-form expressions for the asymptotic …
Review Essay: Excuse Theory Through A Liberal Lens, Richard C. Boldt
Review Essay: Excuse Theory Through A Liberal Lens, Richard C. Boldt
Faculty Scholarship
This essay reviews Excusing Crime, by Jeremy Horder, Reader in Criminal Law and Tutor in Law at Worcester College, Oxford. It describes Horder’s project, which is to build a complex taxonomy of criminal law excuse practices and to use that account of “why things are as they are” to argue, on the basis of his version of liberal theory, against “the restricted range” of excuses in the UK and elsewhere. By virtue of his appreciation that some, but not all, excuses contain justificatory elements, and given his insistence that pure claims of non-responsibility are not excuses, Horder has defined a …

A Comparison Of Two Teaching Methodologies In A Middle School Algebra Classroom, Kristina L. Tucky
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This study was an attempt to determine if a change in teaching methodology would have a positive effect on the outcome, as measured by a chapter test, of an algebra class. The research involved a pretest-posttest control group design of two sections of an eighth grade algebra class. The control group received the standard instructional practice, known as the "direct method", while the treatment group received the same "direct method" and additional "constructive" methodology in the form of manipulatives and group reading of the subject matter. No statistical difference was found between the means of the two classes on the …
