Elements Of Human Decision-Making, Jens G. Pohl Aug 2006

Elements Of Human Decision-Making, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The purpose of this paper is to present some understandings of the human problem-solving activity that we have gained in the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) over the past two decades. Since we feel strongly that the human decision-maker should be an integral component of any computer-based decision-support system, it follows that we would have endeavored to incorporate many of the elements that appear to be important to the user in the design of these systems. The complexity of the human cognitive system is evidenced by the large body of literature that describes problem-solving behavior and the relatively fewer …

Effect Of Nicotine On Negative Affect Among More Impulsive Smokers, Neal Doran, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Bonnie Springs, Joe Vanderveen, Jessica Werth Cook, Malia Richmond Aug 2006

Effect Of Nicotine On Negative Affect Among More Impulsive Smokers, Neal Doran, Dennis E. Mcchargue, Bonnie Springs, Joe Vanderveen, Jessica Werth Cook, Malia Richmond

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

In the present study, the authors tested the hypothesis that nicotine would provide greater relief from negative affect for more impulsive smokers than for less impulsive smokers. Euthymic adult smokers (N = 70) participated in 2 laboratory sessions, during which they underwent a negative mood induction (music x autobiographical memory), then smoked either a nicotinized or de-nicotinized cigarette. Mixed-effects regression yielded a significant Impulsivity x Condition (nicotinized vs. de-nicotinized) x Time interaction. Simple effects analyses showed that heightened impulsivity predicted greater negative affect relief after smoking a nicotinized cigarette but not after smoking a de-nicotinized cigarette. These data suggest …

Malibu Locals Only: "Boys Will Be Boys", Or Dangerous Street Gang? Why The Criminal Justice System's Failure To Properly Identify Suburban Gangs Hurts Efforts At Fighting Gangs, Brian William Ludeke

ExpressO

In the last several years, a group of youths calling themselves Malibu Locals Only or MLO has performed several violent crimes, intimidating many people in the area around Malibu, CA. Despite the gang-like appearance of these youths and their crimes, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials insist that MLO is not a gang. This article examines MLO, its history, and its current state in the context of California anti-gang legislation.

The article theorizes that the criminal justice system's failure to call a group like MLO a gang while waging war on other groups, primarily in lower income, heavily minority areas, …

The Purpose Of Child Support, Ira M. Ellman Aug 2006

The Purpose Of Child Support, Ira M. Ellman

ExpressO

What is the appropriate amount of child support to require in particular cases? How should we take account, if at all, of subsequent events such as either parent’s remarriage? It seems obvious that the answers to such questions ought to turn on our purpose in requiring support payments in the first place. But while fixing the amount of child support can be politically contentious, and has attracted the attention of partisans on both sides of the gender gap, the literature contains no systematic examination of support rules in light of their underlying policy purpose. This article fills that gap. It …

Scribe: A Clustering Approach To Semantic Information Retrieval, Joseph R. Langley Aug 2006

Scribe: A Clustering Approach To Semantic Information Retrieval, Joseph R. Langley

Theses and Dissertations

Information retrieval is the process of fulfilling a user?s need for information by locating items in a data collection that are similar to a complex query that is often posed in natural language. Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) was the predominant technique employed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology?s Text Retrieval Conference for many years until limitations of its scalability to large data sets were discovered. This thesis describes SCRIBE, a modification of LSI with improved scalability. SCRIBE clusters its semantic index into discrete volumes described by high-dimensional extensions to computer graphics data structures. SCRIBE?s clustering strategy limits the …

Empirical Validation Of Requirement Error Abstraction And Classification: A Multidisciplinary Approach, Gursimran Singh Walia Aug 2006

Empirical Validation Of Requirement Error Abstraction And Classification: A Multidisciplinary Approach, Gursimran Singh Walia

Theses and Dissertations

Software quality and reliability is a primary concern for successful development organizations. Over the years, researchers have focused on monitoring and controlling quality throughout the software process by helping developers to detect as many faults as possible using different fault based techniques. This thesis analyzed the software quality problem from a different perspective by taking a step back from faults to abstract the fundamental causes of faults. The first step in this direction is developing a process of abstracting errors from faults throughout the software process. I have described the error abstraction process (EAP) and used it to develop error …

Smart Housing: Technology To Aid Aging In Place - New Opportunities And Challenges, Lalatendu Satpathy Aug 2006

Smart Housing: Technology To Aid Aging In Place - New Opportunities And Challenges, Lalatendu Satpathy

Theses and Dissertations

We are at the threshold of a great change in architectural design. With cheaper and more ubiquitous computing, ?smart? spaces and responsive environments are increasingly becoming plausible and affordable. Are we as architects prepared? Can the profession of architecture respond to current computing technologies? Most critics agree that one of the first (most important) problems that ?smart? homes will help to address is that of spiraling costs of elderly healthcare and care giving. But what is the problem with healthcare? Even if there is a problem, the rural home is different from an urban home. Will the technologies that are …

Behavioral And Healthy Lifestyle Changes After Implementation Of A Walking Program Among Teachers At An Elementary School, Sara Woolfolk

Theses and Dissertations

Health experts are recommending an average of 10,000 steps daily to attain certain health benefits and suggesting the use of pedometers for calculating ambulatory activity, such as walking. A 13-week, worksite walking program was implemented with teachers at an elementary school providing pedometers, weekly walking groups, bimonthly supplemental nutrition information, and a survey upon program completion to evaluate the effectiveness. Results showed that of the 31.3% that participated, 93.6% have tried to increase their daily activity in the past and 58.1% found the Bee Active walking program to be more effective than previous attempts. Participants reported that wearing the pedometer …

Can Holistic Wellness Predict Teacher Effectiveness?, Dana Rolison Harwell Aug 2006

Can Holistic Wellness Predict Teacher Effectiveness?, Dana Rolison Harwell

Theses and Dissertations

Wellness literature reported that the current focus on academic achievement and high-stakes testing has sacrificed wellness in students, and ?there is a strong need and a public outcry to promote wellness in public schools? (Myers & Sweeney, 2005a, p. 228). Also, ?the promotion of schoolwide well-being will enrich the academic experience of students and families. In addition, school staff members who are aware and knowledgeable of wellness concepts may be more likely to apply healthy strategies in the curriculum and throughout the school? (Myers & Sweeney, p. 232). Effective teacher research supported the Student Teacher Assessment Instrument as a viable …

The Role Of Advanced Nurse Practitioner In Health Promotion And Disease Prevention Of Obesity In Children, Pamela Johnson

MSN Research Projects

Obesity is one of the most serious health problems facing the youth of the United States. Evidence suggests that the problem is getting worse rapidly. Obesity is now the most prevalent physiological and psychological disease of children and adolescents. Many people; i.e., governmental authorities and national leaders in the health care system perceived that obesity will impact health care in the United States, as well as in the world, now and in the future; specifically, increased cost, increased individual and community health infractions, problems, and quality of life. Many people think it is a cosmetic problem only, but in reality, …

The Role Of The Nurse Practitioner In Providing Supportive Care To Patients With Migraine Headaches, Kala White Phillips

MSN Research Projects

Migraine is a debilitating disorder that is now recognized as a chronic illness, not simply a headache. The condition is associated with a great deal of pain and suffering as well as considerable economic consequences both to the patient and society in terms of healthcare costs and lost productivity. Migraines increase morbidity, limit daily activities, and affect the sufferer’s well-being. Migraine headaches affect approximately 30 million people in the United States, and 75% of migraine sufferers are women. Migraines may occur at any age, but they usually begin between the ages of 10 and 40 and diminish after age 50. …

An Evidence Based Practice Perspective In Effects Of Spirituality On Health Outcomes, Jessica Heard Walling Aug 2006

An Evidence Based Practice Perspective In Effects Of Spirituality On Health Outcomes, Jessica Heard Walling

MSN Research Projects

Spirituality was a significant part of nursing from the beginning of the profession. The nursing profession was viewed by Florence Nightingale with a spiritual perspective in mind. She believed that one should receive a call from God to become a nurse (Tuck, Pullen, & Lynn, 1997). Then, with the emergence of modem medicine in the early 1900’s, there was a shift away from the need for spirituality. However, since the 1980’s, there has been an increasing interest in the practical use and obvious need for the spiritual being to be cared for as well as the physical (Narayanasamy, 2001). Brush …

Copyright Distributive Injustice, Daniel Benoliel Aug 2006

Copyright Distributive Injustice, Daniel Benoliel

ExpressO

By design, copyright is a legal field that is not distinctively designed for redistribution. And yet, numerous fairness scholars and other critics of the economics paradigm quite markedly argue that copyright law should be based upon some measure of distribution, not efficiency.

This essay argues that copyright law should not promote distributive justice concerns, subject to narrow exceptions and that other more efficient law such as taxation and welfare laws should do that instead. It does so in accordance to the prevailing welfare economics interpretative approach to copyright jurisprudence, with emphasis on the latest Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing litigation.

It …

Finding Voice: An Exploration Of A Community¿Based Adult Learning Process, Stephen C. Jeanetta Aug 2006

Finding Voice: An Exploration Of A Community¿Based Adult Learning Process, Stephen C. Jeanetta

Dissertations

The Circles of Hope is a dialogue and support group process that uses personal support, education for action, and organizing for change as a method for their own personal development and change and to become agents of change in their own communities. Case studies summaries based on individual interviews and participation in a focus group were developed for seven women who have been regular participants in the Circles of Hope. Using cross-case analysis as the key analytic framework (Miles & Huberman, 1984), change was examined across three themes, the process experience, personal growth and change, and engagement in community. This …

Impact Of Universal Health Coverage On Health In Late Life, Nathalie Huguet Aug 2006

Impact Of Universal Health Coverage On Health In Late Life, Nathalie Huguet

Dissertations and Theses

The growth of the elderly population is a major public concern in industrialized countries. Understanding the factors contributing to better health in late life is essential. Canadians appear to be healthier than Americans, yet concrete findings that determine whether older Canadians are healthier than older Americans are missing. The primary goal of this study is to examine the relative importance of the health care system in explaining why older Canadians may be healthier than older Americans. To achieve this goal, this study (a) assessed if older Canadians are healthier than older Americans; (b) investigated the impact of health care coverage …
