Meaningful Activities For Individuals With Dementia Living In Long-Term Care, Angela Conti Dec 2006

Meaningful Activities For Individuals With Dementia Living In Long-Term Care, Angela Conti

All Theses

Among older adults with Alzheimer`s disease, 61% to 88% experience problematic passivity (Kolanowski, 1995), which has been linked to a loss of functional abilities (Colling, 1999). In order to prevent this functional decline, social isolation, and development of problematic passivity guidelines can be deduced from the Need-driven Dementia-compromised Behavior (NDB) model for identifying the causes of passive behavior, which can be addressed when designing specialized therapeutic recreation programs.
The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of meaningful activities compared to traditional nursing home activities on the level of alert engagement among individuals with dementia living in a …

An Investigation Of Proportional Thinking Among High School Students, Kirsten Dooley Dec 2006

An Investigation Of Proportional Thinking Among High School Students, Kirsten Dooley

All Dissertations

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics suggests that formal proportional reasoning instruction take place during grades five through eight (1989). While extensive research has explored both pre-instructional and intra-instructional student proportional thinking strategies, little research has been done on post-instructional proportional thinking strategies used by high-school aged students. As proportional reasoning is fundamental for success in Algebra and other advanced mathematics, it seems relevant to verify that these students retain their reasoning abilities and can apply them in both high school and college mathematical situations.
This study sought to: (1) determine whether high-school students from specific rural, low-income school …

Food Insecurity And Oregon Tanf Leavers, Kim Hoffman Dec 2006

Food Insecurity And Oregon Tanf Leavers, Kim Hoffman

Dissertations and Theses

Food security, as defined in the U.S., means access by all people at all times to enough food for an active, healthy life. Examining the risk factors and consequences of food insecurity for those who leave Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) has practical implications, but empirical research has lagged behind theory. This study tested the Campbell Model of Food Insecurity (1991), a previously untested theoretical model, in a sample of TANF leavers in Oregon (n=637 Wave 1, n=552 Wave 2). Additionally, a qualitative examination of Oregon Food Bank workers, Oregon's largest charitable emergency food organization, was conducted to gather …

An Overview Of The Near-Death Experience Phenomenon, David San Filippo Ph.D. Dec 2006

An Overview Of The Near-Death Experience Phenomenon, David San Filippo Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

Near-death experiences appear to be universal phenomena that have been reported for centuries. A near-death encounter is defined as an event in which the individual could very easily die or be killed, or may have already been considered clinically dead, but nonetheless survives, and continue his or her physical life. Reports of near-death experiences date back to the Ice Age. There are cave paintings, in France and Spain that depict possible after life scenes that are similar to reported scenes related to near-death experiences. Plato's Republic presents the story of a near-death experience of a Greek soldier named Er. In …

Religion And Subjective Well-Being Among China’S Elderly Population, Philip H. Brown, Brian Tierney Dec 2006

Religion And Subjective Well-Being Among China’S Elderly Population, Philip H. Brown, Brian Tierney

Working Papers in Economics

Evidence from developed and developing countries alike demonstrates a strongly positive relationship between religiosity and happiness, particularly for women and particularly among the elderly. Using survey data from the oldest old in China, we find a strong negative relationship between religious participation and subjective well-being in a rich multivariate logistic framework that controls for demographics, health and disabilities, living arrangements and marital status, wealth and income, lifestyle and social networks, and location. In contrast to other studies, we also find that religion has a larger effect on subjective well-being on men than women.

Lawyers, Citizens, And The Internal Point Of View, W. Bradley Wendel Dec 2006

Lawyers, Citizens, And The Internal Point Of View, W. Bradley Wendel

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Imagine two citizens, one of whom obeys the law only in order to avoid being sanctioned for noncompliance, the other of whom looks to the law for guidance, and regards legal directives as legitimate reasons for action in themselves. These two hypothetical citizens represent Oliver Wendell Holmes' metaphorical bad man and H.L.A. Hart's puzzled man, respectively. Both citizens take the law into account in their practical reasoning, but they are concerned with very different kinds of reasons created by law. Hart argues that the bad citizen's point of view is inadequate to capture the law's distinctive normativity. In response, some …

Misogyny, Androgyny And Sexual Harassment: Sex Discrimination In A Gender-Deconstructed World, Meredith Render Dec 2006

Misogyny, Androgyny And Sexual Harassment: Sex Discrimination In A Gender-Deconstructed World, Meredith Render

Faculty Scholarship

Understanding sexual harassment as a form of discrimination “because of sex” has grown increasingly difficult as our understandings of both gender and sex have grown richer and more complex. This piece offers a new descriptive model for understanding gender bias in the context of sexual harassment law. The piece argues that two separate sets of ideas about gender have intersected to produce a new picture of gender “equality”: one that is separated from a binary model of men and women, but that nonetheless continues to disadvantage women as compared to men. The paper refers to this idea as the androcentric-assimilation …

Perceived Source Credibility Of Local Television News: The Impact Of Television Form And Presence, Cheryl C. Bracken Dec 2006

Perceived Source Credibility Of Local Television News: The Impact Of Television Form And Presence, Cheryl C. Bracken

Communication Faculty Publications

An increasing number of local news stations are producing and broadcasting their newscasts in high-definition television (HDTV), but to date there has not been an investigation of audience perceptions of news in high definition. This study presents the results from an experiment investigating the influence of television form (image quality and field of view) on presence and audiences' perceptions of source credibility for news anchors and local news. The results demonstrate that improved image quality (HDTV) has a positive influence on audience perceptions of source credibility and the overall credibility of newscasts. Implications are discussed.

Leveraging Workplace Diversity In Organizations, Alison M. Konrad Dec 2006

Leveraging Workplace Diversity In Organizations, Alison M. Konrad

Organization Management Journal

Research identifies several substantial barriers to the building of good working relationships among diverse cultural groups, and diversity must be managed if organizations are to attain the benefits promised by the business case for diversity. Many organizations have created diversity initiatives to address the demographic changes in the labor force and customer base, but few have achieved the goal of developing a truly multicultural organization. This article tracks best practices for managing diversity as well as future trends managers should prepare for. Managing diversity successfully requires a long-term commitment, and research suggests that employees respond well to diversity best practices …

When Reality And Rules Collide: Understanding The Business Context Of Ethical Decisions, Timothy D. Golden, Kathleen Dechant Dec 2006

When Reality And Rules Collide: Understanding The Business Context Of Ethical Decisions, Timothy D. Golden, Kathleen Dechant

Organization Management Journal

With the series of ethics scandals over the last decade, more and more companies have created, updated, or clarified their corporate codes of conduct. Yet even though tougher and more detailed guidelines are in place, managers often find themselves questioning the validity and application of some rules in certain situations. In particular, when managers experience a disconnect between company rules and what is actually occurring on the job, they are faced with the choice of whether or not to adhere to the rules, or bend or break them. This inbasket exercise simulates a day in the life of a corporate …

The purpose of this paper is to provide: (1) an overview of the theory of ESI, including the historical contributions and current conceptualizations; (2) the impact of ESI on performance, including the research evidence and examples of organizations using ESI; (3) developing ESI competencies and a model for desirable, sustainable change; and (4) a call to action for education and management, including guidelines for fostering ESI in organizations. Unlike general intelligence or personality, the key assumption and …
