Flexible Work Arrangements: The Overview Memo, Workplace Flexibility 2010, Georgetown University Law Center Sep 2006

Flexible Work Arrangements: The Overview Memo, Workplace Flexibility 2010, Georgetown University Law Center

Memos and Fact Sheets

Many employees today have ongoing, predictable demands on their time outside of work. These demands may include dependent children, an ill family member, a long commute, a desire for increased education, or a commitment to community or religious activities. To meet these demands, and to get a paying job done, such individuals often need to work at a different time or in a different place than the traditional “9 am to 5 pm, five days/week, face time at the workplace” rubric.

In response to employee and employer needs and preferences, some employers provide what we call “Flexible placethat work gets …

Decision-Making About Volitional Impairment In Sexually Violent Predators, Cynthia Calkins Mercado, Brian H. Bornstein, Robert F. Schopp Sep 2006

Decision-Making About Volitional Impairment In Sexually Violent Predators, Cynthia Calkins Mercado, Brian H. Bornstein, Robert F. Schopp

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The Kansas v. Hendricks (1997) decision, in which the Supreme Court authorized post-sentence civil commitment for certain sex offenders, appeared to be constitutionally legitimized by limiting the class of offenders eligible for this special form of civil commitment to those who are “unable to control” their dangerousness. Nowhere in the available record, however, did the Court elucidate what they meant by this notion of volitional impairment. This study sought to examine factors that legal professionals (n = 43), psychologists (n = 40), and mock jurors (n = 76) deem most relevant to a determination of sex offender volitional impairment. Participants, …

Determining The Repair Ranking Of Existing Rc Bridges Using Least Squares Technique Associated With Comparison Matrix Method, Ming-Te Liang, Chin-Ming Lin, Wen-Hu Tsao, Chi-Jang Yeh Sep 2006

Determining The Repair Ranking Of Existing Rc Bridges Using Least Squares Technique Associated With Comparison Matrix Method, Ming-Te Liang, Chin-Ming Lin, Wen-Hu Tsao, Chi-Jang Yeh

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The principal objective of this paper is employed the least squares technique associated with comparison matrix method to determine the repair ranking of existing reinforced concrete (RC) bridges with bestridden or non-bestridden river. Six existing RC bridges in Taiwan are given as an illustrative example. For verifying the feasibility and reliability of the proposed method, the D (Degree) E (Extent) R (Relevancy) evaluation method, which is only considered the RC bridges built on river bed and is now widely used to evaluate the damage grade for existing RC bridges in Taiwan, is also adopted to assessing the same six existing …

There is no dispute that the punitive damages award that was upheld by the Oregon Supreme Court in this case satisfies the most rigorous law and economic standards for rationality. The Court need not credit the analysis of the undersigned amici on this score; the fact that Petitioner’s own amici – most notably law and economics scholars A. Mitchell Polinsky and Steven Shavell – have been unable to find anything economically amiss in the decision below speaks volumes. To be sure, Professors Polinsky and Shavell have filed an amicus brief in support of Philip Morris in this case, just as …

Girls' Perception Of Physical Environmental Factors And Transportation: Reliability And Association With Physical Activity And Active Transport To School, Kelly R. Evenson, Amanda Birnbaum, Ariane L. Bedimo-Rung, James Sallis, Carolyn C. Voorhees, Kimberly Ring, John P. Elder Sep 2006

Girls' Perception Of Physical Environmental Factors And Transportation: Reliability And Association With Physical Activity And Active Transport To School, Kelly R. Evenson, Amanda Birnbaum, Ariane L. Bedimo-Rung, James Sallis, Carolyn C. Voorhees, Kimberly Ring, John P. Elder

Department of Public Health Scholarship and Creative Works

Background

Preliminary evidence suggests that the physical environment and transportation are associated with youth physical activity levels. Only a few studies have examined the association of physical environmental factors on walking and bicycling to school. Therefore, the purpose of this study was (1) to examine the test-retest reliability of a survey designed for youth to assess perceptions of physical environmental factors (e.g. safety, aesthetics, facilities near the home) and transportation, and (2) to describe the associations of these perceptions with both physical activity and active transport to school.

Methods

Test and retest surveys, administered a median of 12 days later, …
