The Architecture Of Enabling Technology In The Critical Care Setting: The Role Of Architecture In Addressing The Health Care - Technology Paradox, Matthew Nitch
All Theses
Health care architecture, particularly tertiary care settings, which have the sickest people, and most advanced medical care, should accommodate and employ technology in ways that are both therapeutic and enabling. Although technology in the tertiary care setting is generally considered beneficial, it can sometimes have negative impacts, cause stress and result in poor health outcomes. Norman Cousins said in his book Anatomy of an Illness, 'Many doctors are increasingly aware of the circular paradox [of the intensive care unit]. It provides better electronic aids than ever before for dealing with emergencies that are often intensified because they communicate a sense …

In-School Suspension: A Qualitative Study Of High School Programs, Joseph M. Boone
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
In-School Suspension (ISS) is the temporary placement of a student experiencing behavior problems in an alternative location within the school or school district. ISS is designed to offset the negative effects of exclusion and external suspension from school. In the ideal situation students assigned to ISS are under school supervision with an academic component provided (Stiefer, 2003).
There are various forms of ISS including: the punitive format which employs strict rule enforcement, the discussion format which includes activities designed to improve self-esteem, communication, and problem solving skills, and the academic model, which focuses on improving skills required to improve academic …

Evidence For Multiple Manipulation Processes In Prefrontal Cortex, Dana A. Eldreth, Michael D. Patterson, Anthony J. Porcelli, Bharat B. Biswal, Donovan Rebbechi, Bart Rypma
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is known to subserve working memory (WM) processes. Brain imaging studies of WM using delayed response tasks (DRTs) have shown memory-load-dependent activation increases in dorsal prefrontal cortex (PFC) regions. These activation increases are believed to reflect manipulation of to-be-remembered information in the service of memory-consolidation. This speculation has been based on observations of similar activation increases in tasks that overtly require manipulation by instructing participants to reorder to-be-remembered list items. In this study, we tested the assumption of functional equivalence between these two types of WM tasks. Participants performed a DRT under two conditions with memory …

Traveling Salesman Problem: A Foveating Pyramid Model, Zygmunt Pizlo, Emil Stefanov, John Saalweachter, Zheng Li, Yll Haxhimusa, Walter G. Kropatsch
The Journal of Problem Solving
We tested human performance on the Euclidean Traveling Salesman Problem using problems with 6–50 cities. Results confirmed our earlier findings that: (a) the time of solving a problem is proportional to the number of cities, and (b) the solution error grows very slowly with the number of cities. We formulated a new version of a pyramid model. The new model has an adaptive spatial structure, and it simulates visual acuity and visual attention. Specifically, the model solves the E-TSP problem sequentially by moving attention from city to city, the same way human subjects do. The model includes a parameter representing …

Optimizing And “Pessimizing”: Human Performance With Instructional Variants Of The Traveling Salesperson Problem, Edward Chronicle, James Macgregor, Thomas Ormerod
The Journal of Problem Solving
The two-dimensional Traveling Salesperson Problem (TSP) requires finding the shortest tour through n locations. Untrained adults are adept at the task, and reliably outperform simple construction algorithms for n up to 60. Performance may stem from a specific, inherent ability. Alternatively, it may reflect general spatial intelligence, whether inherent or acquired. If the latter holds, then people should be equally adept at finding longest tours. Two experiments comparing ability in the two tasks found participants significantly better at finding short than long tours. Furthermore, human performance was significantly worse than a simple construction algorithm (furthest-neighbor) for the task of finding …
