Toward A Critical Ethnography Of Librarian-Supported Collaborative Learning, Terrence W. Epperson Oct 2006

Toward A Critical Ethnography Of Librarian-Supported Collaborative Learning, Terrence W. Epperson

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The emerging multidisciplinary field of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) has the potential to address several theoretical, political, and praxis issues within academic librarianship. Librarians are uniquely situated to contribute to the ongoing development of CSCL, and the library is an ideal “place” for the development, implementation, and evaluation of collaborative learning strategies and systems. The author presents three pressing, interrelated challenges within library and information science (LIS) and discusses how CSCL analyzes the social production of knowledge, emphasizing the distinction between cooperative and collaborative learning. Issues of shared concern between LIS and CSCL can best be addressed through ethnographic analysis …

Tomorrow's Library: The Building, Online Access, And Classroom, Michael Kazanjian Oct 2006

Tomorrow's Library: The Building, Online Access, And Classroom, Michael Kazanjian

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

In tomorrow's library, students, teachers, and the public will increasingly partner with librarians. The public can become better acquainted with recorded knowledge. Academicians including students can search for recorded specialized and general thought contained on shelves in a building. Online technology will extend access as needed. Classrooms will extend the nature of recorded specialized and general thought as students, teachers, and librarians engage in recording and updating information in specific fields and liberal arts. Online technology to course content can allow anyone, anywhere, anytime to learn what class sessions are recording. Online and classroom capabilities empower people to learn and …

For Charity Or Profit? A Case Study Of The Friends Of Ferguson Library's Used Bookshop Program, Westerly A. Donohue

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper hopes to contribute to inter-disciplinary literature by mapping out the ability of one community library's used bookshop volunteers to resolve a potential conflict, that of working in a Used Bookshop Program that both gives away books to institutional recipients deemed as eligible, with its overarching purpose: to maximize profitability on behalf of the library, for serving its programming to the urban City of Stamford, located in Stamford, Connecticut. The study encompasses visual sociological methods, and discusses multi-faceted concepts of community-building from a variety of social science perspectives, but mainly based in sociology

Where's The Beef? Tests And Measurements Resources That Help You Find The Actual Test, Brian M. Olesko Oct 2006

Where's The Beef? Tests And Measurements Resources That Help You Find The Actual Test, Brian M. Olesko

University Libraries' Staff Publications

Background

When library users need to find a complete copy of an unpublished psychological test they often turn to the reference staff for help. The best places to look for unpublished tests are in journal articles and in test compilation reference books but searching for tests in these sources can be difficult.

Research databases can help you determine which journal articles made use of a particular test but most databases don't indicate if a copy of the actual test is included in the article.

Searching for tests in reference books is even more difficult. Library catalog records rarely list the …

Analysis Of Layered Social Networks, Jonathan T. Hamill Oct 2006

Analysis Of Layered Social Networks, Jonathan T. Hamill

Theses and Dissertations

Prevention of near-term terrorist attacks requires an understanding of current terrorist organizations to include their composition, the actors involved, and how they operate to achieve their objectives. To aid this understanding, operations research, sociological, and behavioral theory relevant to the study of social networks are applied, thereby providing theoretical foundations for new methodologies to analyze non-cooperative organizations, defined as those trying to hide their structure or are unwilling to provide information regarding their operations. Techniques applying information regarding multiple dimensions of interpersonal relationships, inferring from them the strengths of interpersonal ties, are explored. A layered network construct is offered that …

Is There A Correlation Between Scholarly Productivity, Scholarly Influence And Teaching Effectiveness In American Law Schools? An Empirical Study, Benjamin H. Barton Oct 2006

Is There A Correlation Between Scholarly Productivity, Scholarly Influence And Teaching Effectiveness In American Law Schools? An Empirical Study, Benjamin H. Barton

ExpressO

This empirical study attempts to answer an age-old debate in legal academia: whether scholarly productivity helps or hurts teaching. The study is of an unprecedented size and scope. It covers every tenured or tenure-track faculty member at 19 American law schools, a total of 623 professors. The study gathers four years of teaching evaluation data (calendar years 2000-03) and creates an index for teaching effectiveness. This index was then correlated against five different measures of research productivity. The first three measure each professor's productivity for the years 2000-03. These productivity measures include a raw count of publications and two weighted …
