An Exploratory Study Of Executive Hubris And Its Effect On How Chief Executive Officers In Small To Medium Enterprises Make Strategic Management Decisions, A. S. Parker Jan 2006

An Exploratory Study Of Executive Hubris And Its Effect On How Chief Executive Officers In Small To Medium Enterprises Make Strategic Management Decisions, A. S. Parker

Theses : Honours

This exploratory study examined the nature of the recently conceptualised notion of executive hubris; and in particular the effect it may have on how chief executive officers in small to medium sized enterprises make their strategic management decisions. It was designed to explore executive hubris and strategic decision making in a limited sample of executives. On this basis the results are limited to this study and are not generalisable. A core aim of the study however; was to test qualitatively and quantitatively in a fundamental, exploratory way; Hambrick and Hiller's (2005) propositions that executive hubris has an effect on how …

Developing A School Based Science Curriculum: Teachers' Work As Language Work, Jennifer Ann Barnett Jan 2006

Developing A School Based Science Curriculum: Teachers' Work As Language Work, Jennifer Ann Barnett

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

While it is widely recognised that language is consequential in teachers' work within the classroom, this thesis argues that it is also consequential in their curriculum development work outside the classroom. The study takes a phenomenological approach based in a single school, and the key data sources are transcripts of teachers' meetings held to develop a new curriculum framework for their junior secondary science classes. The broad aims of the study are to better understand the ways in which language is consequential in that work, to consider the implications these have for understanding school based curriculum development, and to identify …

What Causes An Organisation To Be What It Is And To Become What It Could Be: A Philosophical Expedition, Alan Byrne Jan 2006

What Causes An Organisation To Be What It Is And To Become What It Could Be: A Philosophical Expedition, Alan Byrne

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This work represents the evolution of a thesis asking the question what causes an organisation to be what it is and to become what it could be. The author ' s thought development is integral to the project and is highlighted throughout. Conversation and relationship become privileged as the transformative cause of change; of being. This study faithfully reproduces how a thesis actually happens, with all the inherent uncertainty and messiness. The life experiences of the author are brought to bear in this autoethnographic study of the business world.

The Role Of Metacognitive Strategies In Promoting Learning English As A Foreign Language Independently, Chayada Danuwong Jan 2006

The Role Of Metacognitive Strategies In Promoting Learning English As A Foreign Language Independently, Chayada Danuwong

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

One of the challenges facing universities in Thailand is that of equipping graduates with the capacity for independent analytical thinking and learning which will enable them to operate in a global context while also contributing constructively to the changing needs of the local scene. The ability to think analytically and to learn independently calls for learners to be purposeful, strategic, and persistent in learning as well as to have more adaptive cognitive processes and the willingness to take charge of their learning. This is the role of metacognition in learning autonomy across domains. This thesis reports on research which has …

Finding The Watermark: A Filmic Response To Domestic Abuse Within Australian Film From 1970 - 2006, Erin Nichols Jan 2006

Finding The Watermark: A Filmic Response To Domestic Abuse Within Australian Film From 1970 - 2006, Erin Nichols

Theses : Honours

Due to various social, international and economic encumbrances, Australian film has made a limited foray into the representation of domestic abuse. A limited number of films have been made on this topic since the early 1970's, and even then, the depiction of this social issue has been watered down and sanitised for mainstream consumption. It is the author's belief that the filmmaker has an important and highly influential opportunity to present a social commentary on issues and must not shirk that responsibility. The film project supported by this exegesis responds to the above concerns and the priority has been to …

Parental Compliance To Clinical Recommendations In An Adhd Clinic., Alice Samantha Thibodeau Jan 2006

Parental Compliance To Clinical Recommendations In An Adhd Clinic., Alice Samantha Thibodeau

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Psychological assessments are a cornerstone of clinical practice in psychology, but if results and recommendations are not used to guide treatment interventions, their value is greatly diminished. Currently, there is very little research that examines adherence to treatment recommendations given to parents or caregivers following psychological evaluations of their children. The present study expands on previous research (MacNaughton & Rodrigue, 2001) examining perceived barriers to parental compliance with psychological assessment recommendations by considering the impact of severity of child behavior problems and parenting stress on compliance. Eighty caregiver/child dyads were recruited through an ADHD evaluation clinic and caregivers completed a telephone …

Friendships,Romantic Relationsips,And The Importance Of Self-Expansion., Mami Kashiwabara Jan 2006

Friendships,Romantic Relationsips,And The Importance Of Self-Expansion., Mami Kashiwabara

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Self-expansion theory (Aron & Aron, 1986) posits that individuals enter and maintain relationships in order to expand their sense of self and suggests that expanding the sense of self is a basic human motivation. In this study, I examined whether the perceived opportunities for self-expansion within a relationship predicted feelings of closeness and passion for a partner, and unlike many previous studies, I explored the importance of self-expansion in friendships as well as romantic relationships. I also explored individual differences in the importance of self-expansion opportunities in predicting closeness and passion. The results suggest that opportunities for self-expansion may motivate …

Assessing Risk For Violent Recidivism: A Comparison Of The Psychopathy Checklist—Revised And The Child And Adolescent Taxon Scale When Calculating Violence Risk Appraisal Guide Scores, Joseph Calvin Bolton Iii

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Violence Risk Appraisal Guide (VRAG) is the tool of choice when conducting forensic assessments of risk, and consists of 12-items correlated with violent recidivism. One of these items is level of psychopathy, which is normally assessed via the Psychopathy Checklist---Revised (PCL-R). The PCL-R is a 20-item instrument, based on an interview and a review of collateral information, which provides a score reflecting severity of psychopathy. The Child and Adolescent Taxon Scale (CATS) also provides an index of psychopathy, but is comprised of only 8-items. There is no interview associated with the CATS, and items are scored based on retrospective …

Computer -Mediated Communication In Society: A Study On Self -Disclosure, Scott C. Green Jan 2006

Computer -Mediated Communication In Society: A Study On Self -Disclosure, Scott C. Green

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the effects of computer-mediated communication (CMC) were examined on two different measurements of self-disclosure. The hypothesis was that CMC is qualitatively different from face-to-face communication (FtF), that this difference affects self-disclosure, and that the anonymity engendered by CMC is one cause of this increase in self-disclosure. Therefore, the researcher examined how prominently anonymity factored into the difference that was observed between dyads that communicated in FtF or CMC conditions. The experiment employed a 2 X 2 factorial design by which participants engaged in a conversation using either computer conferencing technology or FtF, and in which the participant …

Novice Special Educators' Perceptions And Use Of Research -Validated Classroom Practices For Students With High Incidence Disabilities, Melissa L. Jones Jan 2006

Novice Special Educators' Perceptions And Use Of Research -Validated Classroom Practices For Students With High Incidence Disabilities, Melissa L. Jones

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With the implementation of NCLB (2001) and IDEIA (2004), the research-to-practice gap in specialEducation has garnered increased attention. This qualitative investigation involved a collective case study that explored the phenomenon through the eyes of 10 novice special educators. Specifically, the study sought to determine the teachers' perceptions of research in general as well as their use of six broad practices that have been validated by research for students with disabilities. Interviews, observations, and self-report measures resulted in findings that indicate low rates of implementation as well as a lack of alignment between the educators' words and actions. Finally, barriers and …

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder And The Process Of Diagnostic Decision Making Between Psychologists And Psychiatrists, Katrin Woodworth Carlson Jan 2006

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder And The Process Of Diagnostic Decision Making Between Psychologists And Psychiatrists, Katrin Woodworth Carlson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PNMD) is included in the DSM-IV (APA, 1994) Appendix A, Criteria Son and Axes Provided for Further Study. Its symptoms overlap significantly with mood and anxiety disorders, but occur in the late luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and remit by the early follicular phase. Thus, PMDD is a challenging differential diagnosis that relies upon establishing a temporal relationship between symptoms and the menstrual cycle, and it provides an opportunity for examining gnostic decision making processes. A national sample of psychologists (n = 155) and psychiatrists (n = 139) were presented with an Internet web page with …

Stressors Among First-Generation College Students: A Retrospective Inquiry, Maryann Therese Latus

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A multiple-case-study qualitative approach was used to examine the stressors among first-generation college students. The students were in their senior year at a medium-sized Midwestern public university. The researcher conducted two focus groups and a total of 10 in-depth interviews with first-generation college students. Several themes emerged from the data that was collected. The overarching themes that served as the primary framework for this study were stressors related to family, friends, and the university. One of the major themes, how the participants coped with their particular stressors, is discussed in detail. The differences that were found between this group of …

The Effects Of Existential Attribution And Religiousness/Spirituality On Well -Being In Hiv Patients, Amy N. Huggins-Rieke Jan 2006

The Effects Of Existential Attribution And Religiousness/Spirituality On Well -Being In Hiv Patients, Amy N. Huggins-Rieke

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

HIV is a serious illness that has received considerable attention in research literature addressing the implications of spirituality/religiousness on coping with this illness. Past research indicates that an individual's level of guilt over having contracted HIV is associated with feelings of stigmatization and suffering, which can influence his or her wellbeing in coping with the illness. The current study seeks to investigate the relationship between feelings of responsibility for illness (attributions) and engagement with religiousness/spiritual meaning as a coping resource. It is hypothesized that the use of existential attribution will moderate the relationship between an individual's religiousness/spirituality and his or …

The Relationship Of Psychopathy And Social Interest To Prison Adjustment, Ashley Harrison Noble Jan 2006

The Relationship Of Psychopathy And Social Interest To Prison Adjustment, Ashley Harrison Noble

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Over the past few decades, methods used to predict recidivism among the criminal population have improved substantially. Recent research has further identified some specific factors such as psychopathy (e.g. a lack of guilt, egocentricity, and superficial charm) and social interest (e.g. a willingness to accept the responsibility for one's actions, compassion toward others, and contributing to the common welfare) as predictors of recidivism and suggests that these constructs may be useful in predicting prison adjustment as well. The goal of this study was to assess the usefulness of specific measures of psychopathy and social interest in the prediction of prison …

Threatened Egotism, Narcissism, And Identification With Criminal Others As Predictors Of Recidivism, Jeffrey M. Morris Jan 2006

Threatened Egotism, Narcissism, And Identification With Criminal Others As Predictors Of Recidivism, Jeffrey M. Morris

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent research has challenged the assertion that low self-esteem leads to violence. Narcissists, who typically have elevated self-esteem, may have strong emotional responses to ego threats resulting in increased aggression. This relationship may be important to understand in relation to criminal behavior. Recidivism rates appear to be affected by an interaction of level of self-esteem and identification with criminal others. This study will examine the relationship between self-esteem, narcissism, identification with criminal others, and recidivism. This study included 56 male offenders recruited from a parole office and assessed with the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Fleming and Courtney's 1984 Self-Rating Scale, and …

Usefulness Of Parent -Child Observation In Assessment For Attention Deficit /Hyperactivity Disorder Among Children, Jeffrey M. Huttinger Jan 2006

Usefulness Of Parent -Child Observation In Assessment For Attention Deficit /Hyperactivity Disorder Among Children, Jeffrey M. Huttinger

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research indicates that the most effective means to assess for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children is a multi-method, multi-rater system. Classroom observations and behavior rating scales are routinely used in the assessment for ADHD. Research has demonstrated frequent discrepancies between parent and teacher ratings of a child's behavior. It is unclear if these differences are due to rater bias and/or situational differences. School observations can be used as a source of information on child behavior in the classroom and compared to teacher ratings. However, standard ADHD assessment batteries generally do not include a second source of information to …

Where Are The Active Citizens Of Tomorrow? We Need Them Now..., Margaret E. Piasecka Jan 2006

Where Are The Active Citizens Of Tomorrow? We Need Them Now..., Margaret E. Piasecka

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In 1997, Hindess labelled the gap between governments and citizens the democratic deficit. This gap, or deficit, has arisen over a long time period as a result of public scandals, perceptions of poor performance and poor economies. Local governments around the world are now attempting to regain community respect and support - the unstated mandate for governance - and seeking to implement government policies relating to concepts variously described as community engagement, capacity building, active citizenship or public/citizen participation. This thesis has identified a methodology for finding people who are motivated to act in the public interest in one local …

The Obstacles In Women's Pathway To Principalship, Mahshid Pirouznia

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The research problem is to investigate the obstacles of women seeking the principalship in public education; and also to explore major changes of different obstacles to women's principalship because women's roles have changed over time. Different obstacles in women's pathway to principalship are: low self-image; lack of encouragement; myths about women's work; sex stereotyping; lack of aspiration; role conflict; low self-esteem; family responsibilities; lack of mobility; and hiring and promoting practices. The research questions are: 1. what are the barriers for women who did not obtain a principalship or assistant principalship. 2. what are the barriers for women who obtained …

Constraints To Youth Participation In The Current Federal Political Environment, Judith G. Bridgland Sorenson Jan 2006

Constraints To Youth Participation In The Current Federal Political Environment, Judith G. Bridgland Sorenson

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research explores the constraints to youth participation through the mechanism of the National Youth Roundtable. In 1999 the National Youth Roundtable was established as the centrepiece of the Federal Government's `Voices of Youth' initiative, designed to go to the grass roots of the youth population and seek their participation on matters of policy development. This was to be the new interface between young people and the Australian government, replacing the peak body for youth affairs as a more effective participation mechanism.

Silenced Voices: Experiences Of Grief Following Road Traffic Crashes In Western Australia, Lauren Breen Jan 2006

Silenced Voices: Experiences Of Grief Following Road Traffic Crashes In Western Australia, Lauren Breen

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Despite the introduction of road safety measures and media campaigns, crashes are a leading cause of death in Western Australia. While economic costs of crashes are relatively easy to determine, their psychosocial burden remains appreciably under-studied, as are the social, cultural, historical, temporal, and political contexts within which grief experiences are housed. As such, I explored the experience of grief resulting from losing a loved one in a crash in Western Australia and described the influence of contextual factors on those grief experiences.

Madam Pele: Novel And Essay, Jud L. House Jan 2006

Madam Pele: Novel And Essay, Jud L. House

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Novel. My novel deals with the themes of obsession, jealousy, volatility, and revenge, while simultaneously dealing with the more benign theme of love within relationships, and holiday-mode pleasures. Divided into different narrative voices, it traces the interweaving stories of Madam Pele, Goddess of volcanoes and lava, a small lava rock, and Di and Paul, both during their past holiday in Hawaii, and in the present in Perth. Inadvertantly transporting Pele within the rock on their return from Hawaii, they unwittingly release her rage upon their city. Essay. In this essay I cover contemporary theoretical considerations, such as Modernism, Postmodernism and …

Neck Loading In High Performance Combat Pilots During Aerial Combat Manoeuvres And Specific Neck Strengthening Exercises, Kevin J. Netto Jan 2006

Neck Loading In High Performance Combat Pilots During Aerial Combat Manoeuvres And Specific Neck Strengthening Exercises, Kevin J. Netto

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Background: Neck pain and injury is a common occurrence in high performance combat pilots (HPCP) around the world. The cause of this has been attributed to exposure to the unavoidable high mechanical loading related to the neck being positioned in non-neutral head postures whilst being exposed to moderate to high +Gz levels. Specific neck conditioning exercises have been proposed as being a possible method to decrease the incidence of neck pain and injury in this population. However, there has been sparsely published research examining the suitability of selected exercises for HPCP who participate in regular aerial combat manoeuvres (ACM).
