Appalachian And Rural Student Performance Differences On Kentucky's Educational Assessment: Eighth Grade Results, D. Clayton Smith
Appalachian And Rural Student Performance Differences On Kentucky's Educational Assessment: Eighth Grade Results, D. Clayton Smith
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
For assessment and accountability, the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) developed the Kentucky Instructional Results Information System (KIRIS). Because the KIRIS assessment relied on student performance and was “high stakes” for schools, the fairness of the assessment was important. This paper examined whether 8th grade students living in Appalachia and/or in primarily rural school districts perform differently on the assessment than their peers. The four years of data (1993-1996) for this study came from KIRIS Cycle 2 data. The dependent variable was a composite score of student performance on constructed-response reading, mathematics, science, and social studies tests. The study found …

From Vulnerability To Resiliency: Assessing Impacts And Responses To Disaster, John J. Green, Duane A. Gill, Anna M. Kleiner
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Hurricane Katrina devastated the social, economic, and physical infrastructure of communities along the Gulf Coast, and many organizations responded in a massive effort to meet their needs. Building from a livelihoods theoretical framework emphasizing the vulnerability-resiliency continuum, this research note focuses on informing services provided during post-disaster relief, recovery, and redevelopment. Based on a case study conducted in East Biloxi, Mississippi, we describe a project that included a needs assessment survey and qualitative interviews. Research findings address the expressed needs of community members following the disaster, types of relief and recovery assistance provided to them, and the kinds of social …

The Effects Of Race, Place, Class, And Gender On Instructional Strategies In Kentucky's Seventh Grade Science Classes: Individual And School Level Analyses, Stephen K. Miller, D. Clayton Smith, Larry S. Ennis
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
This study explored the relationship of student demographics to teaching method in Kentucky’s seventh grade science classrooms for 1997-98, based on performance assessment data (student level N = 21,499; school level N = 264). Students’ perceptions of seven instructional strategies from the KIRIS student questionnaires were placed into three groups: traditional, inquiry-based, and computer. At the student level, these strategies were regressed on race, gender, free/reduced lunch, urbanity of the district, Appalachian status, and Educational Service Region. At the school level, the three approaches were regressed on aggregate school data for these same variables. Findings indicated that demographic factors do …
Poet Revisited: A Reanalysis Of Albrecht And Murdock's Part-Time Farming Model, Lisa A. Eargle
Poet Revisited: A Reanalysis Of Albrecht And Murdock's Part-Time Farming Model, Lisa A. Eargle
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
In this paper, I reanalyze Albrecht and Murdock’s (1984) POET (Population, Organization, Environment, and Technology) model of part-time farming prevalence using 2002 data and two indicators of part-time farming prevalence: percent of farm operators working 100 days or more off-farm and percent of farm operators whose principal occupation is not farming. I compare the results of analyses using these two measures to one another and to the results produced in Albrecht and Murdock’s earlier study using 1978 data. Findings from the analysis of 2002 are similar to those produced with 1978 data. However, the findings from the 2002 analyses do …

Rehabilitation Of Patients With Melas Syndrome: A Casereport, Chia-Sho Yang, Tsung-Ying Li, Shuu-Hai Jiang, Chang-Hung Hsu, Yaw-Don Hsu, Shin-Tsu Chang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
MELAS (mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and recurrent stroke-like episodes) syndrome is a mitochondrial disorder. Patients with mitochondrial myopathies typically have exercise-induced symptoms. Thus, patients are often advised to avoid exercise, which leads to deconditioning. Currently, the concept of aerobic exercise training as therapy for mitochondrial disease is not well established. We report the case of a patient with adult-onset MELAS, who responded positively to a low intensity rehabilitation program. Low intensity training was safe and significantly improved our patient's physical fitness. During the 20-month follow-up period, there was no significant reduction in muscle strength and function. Therefore, short-term endurance training …

Multiresolution Wavelet Analysis Of Event-Related Eeg Potentials Using Ensemble Of Classifier Data Fusion Techniques For Early Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease, Apostolos Topalis
Theses and Dissertations
The recent advances and knowledge in medicine and nutrition have greatly improved our average life expectancy. An unfortunate consequence of this longer life span, however, is a dramatic increase in the number of individuals suffering from dementia, and more specifically, from Alzheimer's disease (AD). Furthermore, AD remains under-diagnosed and under-treated until its more severe stages due to lack of standard diagnostic tools available to community clinics. A search for biomarkers that will allow early diagnosis of the disease is therefore necessary to develop effective medical treatments. Such a biomarker should be non-invasive, simple to obtain, safe, inexpensive, accurate, and most …

Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy For A Child With Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy: A Casereport, Wen-Chi Wu, Yee-Hwa Wu, Hsueh-Feng Chang, Chih-Wei Huang, Jen-Wen Hung
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Non-use of the affected hand is a common symptom of children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP). This report describes the effects of constraint-induced movement therapy in a child with hemiplegic CP, focusing on function and use frequency of the affected hand. Additionally, possible harmful affect on the non-affected hand is also assessed. This study concerns a five-year-old male, with right hemiplegic CP, who received constraint-induced movement therapy for 8 weeks. Throughout the therapy period, the boy wore a splint for at least 8 hours per day to limit movement to the non-affected hand. Functional changes of the affected hand were …

Effects Of Family Factors On The Development Of Alcohol-Related Problems Among Males From Pre-Adolescence To Adulthood
Florida Public Health Review
Alcohol use is a leading risk factor in suicides, homicides and unintentional injuries (including motor vehicle crashes and drownings) among adolescents, and is associated with adolescent health risk behaviors such as cigarette smoking, illicit drug use, and risky sexual behavior. The purpose of this study was to determine if family factors would predict alcohol-related problems as the study cohort transitioned into young adulthood, and to determine if early alcohol use remained a significant influence on the development of alcohol-related problems in young adulthood. Results of the analyses indicate that three of the family factors measured in mid-adolescence were statistically significant …

Data Fusion Of Complementary Information From Parietal And Occipital Event Related Potentials For Early Diagnosis Of Alzheimer's Disease, Nicholas Stepenosky
Theses and Dissertations
The number of the elderly population affected by Alzheimer's disease is rapidly rising. The need to find an accurate, inexpensive, and non-intrusive procedure that can be made available to community healthcare providers for the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is becoming an increasingly urgent public health concern. Several recent studies have looked at analyzing electroencephalogram signals through the use of many signal processing techniques. While their methods show great promise, the final outcome of these studies has been largely inconclusive. The inherent difficulty of the problem may be the cause of this outcome, but most likely it is due to …

The Role Of Caregivers In The Management Of Alzheimer’S Disease : Examples From Asian Countries, Joydeep D. Chaudhuri, Srijit Das
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
The demographic profile of the Asian population is rapidly changing, with a fast increasing ageing population, owing to an increase in longevity and a decreasing birth rate. Moreover, due to improved medical facilities and the increased aged population, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is fast emerging as a major health problem in many Asian countries. As curative treatment for AD is still elusive, care giving is an important component of the management of AD. While Western countries have recognised this issue, besides highly industrialized Japan, the Asian initiative has been relatively slow. This article aims to address issues involved in caregiving in …

Therapeutic Effect Of Air-Jet Therapy In Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema: A Preliminary Report, Wan-Chia Lee, Cheng-Liang Chou, Cheng-Min Chiu, Tcho-Jen Liu, Rai-Chi Chan
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Lymphedema is a common sequela of breast cancer therapy. The decreased arm function with swelling, pain, numbness, and a limited range of motion, is associated with a psychological distress that affects the quality of life. There is no cure for breast cancer-related lymphedema. Complex physical therapy is currently the mainstream of therapy, combined with manual lymphatic drainage, pneumatic compression pumps and compression bandaging. The purpose of this study is to evaluate compressed air therapy as a new approach to lymphedema management.Eleven women with breast cancer-related arm lymphedema were recruited into the study. Air-jet therapy was performed to massage limb in …

Analysis Of Speech Motor Control In Children With Normal Development: Preliminary Report, Liang-Yi Yang, Chai-Ling Chen, Wei-Hsien Hong, Hsieh-Ching Chen, Ching-Yi Wu, Alice M.K. Wong
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Speech is a complex motor skill. It requires the coordination of articulatory and phonation systems, including the chest wall, larynx and oral system, to produce precise oral motor control. Treatment of motor speech dysfunction is based on understanding the mechanism underlying normal speech development and motor control. The purpose of this study is to establish speech motor control patterns in children with normal development (ND) by kinematic analysis.Twenty-eight children with ND (16 males and 12 females) aged 4 to 12 years participated in this study. The children were split into three groups based on age: group A aged 4 to …
Gabapentin For Treatment Of Neuropathic Pain In Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, Chao-Min Wang, Yen-Ho Wang
Gabapentin For Treatment Of Neuropathic Pain In Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, Chao-Min Wang, Yen-Ho Wang
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
The patients with spinal cord injury suffer from motor and sensory impairment with bowel and bladder dysfunction. However, chronic neuropathic pain is also a common complaint after spinal cord injury and is usually refractory to many therapies. The exact mechanism of relieving hyperalgesia and allodynia is still unknown, but most believed it is related to N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and voltage-dependent calcium channel. Gabapentin is supposed to be an antagonist of NMDA receptor complex which mediates an influx of calcium ions when activated. In addition, gabapentin inhibits neuronal calcium influx in a calcium channel by binding to the α2δ subunit of …

Rehabilitation Of Heat Stroke With Cerebellar Motor Dysfunction: A Casereport, Tsung-Ming Yang, Jo-Tong Chen, Wei-Chih Hung, Nai-Wen Guo, Ta-Shen Kuan
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Heat stroke is a medical condition, which in its severest form, may lead to multiple organ failure and death. A previous study showed that most survivors recover completely without sequelae, but some survivors have long-term neurological dysfunction, especially cerebellar motor dysfunction. The rehabilitative outcome of such patients with neurological dysfunction has rarely been reported. We present herein a case of a 31 year old male who suffered from heat stroke, followed by acute rhabdomyolysis, renal failure, respiratory failure, cardiac arrhythmia, and cerebellar motor dysfunction. He was transferred to our rehabilitation ward 36 days after the heat stroke injury due to ataxia, …

Of Fine Lines, Blunt Instruments And Half-Truths: Business Acquisition Agreements And The Right To Lie, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw
ExpressO
In this article, I expand upon a happy coincidence (for scholars) in reconciling the overlap between contract and fraud. Both the recent book by Ian Ayres and Gregory Klass and the Delaware Court of Chancery in Abry Partners Acquisition V, L.P. v. F& W Acquisition, LLC addressed the issue of promissory fraud – the making of a contract as to which the promisor had no intention of performing. Each treatment, however, in focusing on fraudulent affirmative representations, falls short of (a) recognizing the fundamental aspect of deceptive promising in a complex deal, namely the half-truth, (b) articulating an appropriate doctrinal …

Linking Self-Regulation And Risk Proneness To Risky Sexual Behavior: Pathways Through Peer Pressure And Early Substance Use, Lisa J. Crockett, Marcela Raffaelli, Yuh-Ling Shen
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
The linkages between self-regulation in childhood, risk proneness in early adolescence, and risky sexual behavior in mid-adolescence were examined in a cohort of children (N = 518) from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. The possible mediating role of two early adolescent variables (substance use and negative peer pressure) was also examined. Self-regulation was assessed by maternal report at ages 8–9, and risk proneness, comprising aspects of sensation seeking and decision making, was assessed by adolescent self-report at ages 12–13. Structural equation models predicting risky sexual behavior at ages 16–17 indicated that self-regulation operated partly through early adolescent substance use, …
