Aluminum Bioavailability From The Approved Food Additive Leavening Agent Acidic Sodium Aluminum Phosphate, Incorporated Into A Baked Good, Is Lower Than From Water, Robert A. Yokel, Rebecca L. Florence

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

There are estimates of oral aluminum (Al) bioavailability from drinking water, but little information on Al bioavailability from foods. Foods contribute ∼95% and drinking water 1–2% of the typical human's daily Al intake. The objectives were to estimate oral Al bioavailability from a representative food containing the food additive acidic sodium aluminum phosphate (acidic SALP), a leavening agent in baked goods. Rats were acclimated to a special diet that resulted in no stomach contents 14 h after its withdrawal. They were trained to rapidly consume a biscuit containing 1.5% acidic SALP. Oral Al bioavailability was then determined from a biscuit …

Pan Rey Bakery, El Salvador Tests Sorghum Flour, Intsormil

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins

Pan Rey, the “Bread King,” a large commercial bakery located at Quezaltepeque, El Salvador is testing sorghum flour as a substitute for wheat. The Pan Rey Bakery collaborates with the CENTA Food Technology Laboratory in a project to promote the use of sorghum flour in large bakeries. Many small, village level bakeries, such as the bakery of Clemencia Barrera in San Rafael Cedro, El Salvador (see INTSORMIL Report No. 5), have been using sorghum flour as a substitute for wheat for many years. However, use of sorghum flour on a large scale in the big commercial bakeries, such as Pan …

Effect Of Varying Metabolizable Energy And Crude Protein Concentrations In Diets Of Pearl Gray Guinea Fowl Pullets 1. Growth Performance, Samuel N. Nahashon, Nathaniel Adefope, Abravi Amenyenu, D. Wright

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

This study was undertaken to assess dietary ME and CP concentrations for optimum growth performance of Pearl Gray guinea fowl pullets. In a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement, 540 one-day-old Pearl Gray guinea keets were randomly assigned to experimental diets with 2,900, 3,000, and 3,100 kcal of ME/kg of diet, each containing 20, 22, and 24% CP, respectively, from 0 to 8 wk of age (WOA). From 9 to 16 WOA, these diets were adjusted to contain 3,000, 3,100, and 3,200 kcal of ME/ kg, and each had 17, 19, and 21% CP, respectively. Each dietary treatment was replicated 4 …

Application Of Differentiation And Universal Design For Learning In The Second Grade Science Curriculum, Tami Wootton Flach Oct 2006

Application Of Differentiation And Universal Design For Learning In The Second Grade Science Curriculum, Tami Wootton Flach

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Differentiated instruction (DI) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) are philosophies that serve as teaching methodologies that address the needs of diverse learners in the regular classroom. Furthermore, DI can be used to engage students in instruction through different modalities, appeal to different interests, and use varied rates of instruction along with varied degrees of complexity. Also, UDL is an extension of DI, wherein the teacher provides alternatives that are built into the curriculum and suitable for most students. Additionally, the UDL model can be supported by the six principles of effective curriculum (Kame'emui & Simmons, 1999) to design curricular …

Why The Fight Against Poverty Is Failing: A Contrarian View, Knowledge@Smu Oct 2006

Why The Fight Against Poverty Is Failing: A Contrarian View, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Abraham George is the founder of The George Foundation, an NGO engaged in humanitarian work in India, and the author of India Untouched: The Forgotten Face of Rural Poverty. In this contrarian essay, he explores why the current strategies that governments and development agencies are employing to reduce poverty are not working the way they should. Among his arguments: Microcredit programs, as they are now practiced in India, do little to help the poor.

Environmental Rearing Conditions Produce Forebrain Differences In Wild Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha, R. L. Kihslinger, Sean C. Lema, G. A. Nevitt Oct 2006

Environmental Rearing Conditions Produce Forebrain Differences In Wild Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha, R. L. Kihslinger, Sean C. Lema, G. A. Nevitt

Biological Sciences

Recent studies suggest that hatchery-reared fish can have smaller brain-to-body size ratios than wild fish. It is unclear, however, whether these differences are due to artificial selection or instead reflect differences in rearing environment during development. Here we explore how rearing conditions influence the development of two forebrain structures, the olfactory bulb and the telencephalon, in juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) spawned from wild-caught adults. First, we compared the sizes of the olfactory bulb and telencephalon between salmon reared in a wild stream vs. a conventional hatchery. We next compared the sizes of forebrain structures between fish reared …

The Development Of Weaning Practices Among Women Of The Mombasa District, Its Effects On Children’S Public Health Issues, And The Proposition Of Intervention Plans, Rachael Bryan

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Breastfeeding is an unparalleled way of providing nourishment for the infant child in the first few years of life. A large body of literature supports that exclusive breastfeeding is optimal for the first 6 months of life, while complementary foods should be introduced in the diet 6 months and beyond. Mothers who inadequately wean their children are defined as having introduced complementary foods prior to 6 months post-natal age. The inclusive purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of inadequate weaning practices among patients and mothers of patients of the Muslim Education and Welfare Association Medical Centre (MMC) …

Women’S Literacy In Ngaoundéré, Cameroon, Brianne Carpenter Oct 2006

Women’S Literacy In Ngaoundéré, Cameroon, Brianne Carpenter

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper will be a look at adult women’s literacy specifically in Ngaoundéré, Adamaoua, Cameroon. I will begin by placing Cameroon’s illiteracy rates into a global context. I will then define what literacy is, why it is essential to development, how it benefits women particularly, and what women are affected and why. This will be done through a combination of scholarly research and interviews with women participants of the project of “Les Femmes Royales du Lamidat.” I hope to create a setting and a face of one of development’s most pressing issues by letting the women’s words speak for themselves. …
