Cultural Sensitivity Beyond Ethnicity: A Universal Precautions Model, Deborah Dysart Gale
Cultural Sensitivity Beyond Ethnicity: A Universal Precautions Model, Deborah Dysart Gale
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Cross-cultural healthcare research has grown exponentially in recent years, focusing primarily on the healthcare-related needs of ethnic and linguistic minorities. However, by approaching cultural sensitivity from an ethnic/linguistic perspective, the practitioner runs the risk of relying on essentialized or stereotyped accounts of cultural groups, as well as overlooking the needs of other groups (e.g., gays, elderly, physically challenged) that may validly be viewed as cultures and profitably studied with the tools of cross-cultural scholarship. This essay argues that Hofstede’s paradigm of cultural dimensions can serve as a useful foundation for providing culturally sensitive care following the model of Universal Precautions …

Influence Of Feeding Frequency On Feed Intake, Growth Performance And Nutrient Utilization In European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax) Fed Pelleted Or Extruded Diets, Derya Güroy, Emrah Deveci̇ler, Betül Kut Güroy, Ahmet Adem Teki̇nay
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In an 83-day-nutrition trial, effects of feed production technique and feeding frequency on feed intake, growth and nutrient utilization were determined in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Three thousand six hundred fish (170 ± 2.6 g) were randomly allocated to experimental sea cages (approx. 5800 l) according to a 2 x 2 experimental plan [2 processing techniques: steam pelleted diet (P) vs. extruded diet (E); 2 feeding frequencies: twice (2) vs. 3 times (3)]. The P3 group consumed significantly (P < 0.05) more feed than the fish fed extruded diets, irrespective of feeding frequency. Growth rates of all groups did not display any significant difference (P > 0.05) in terms of final weight (FW) or specific growth rate (SGR), although there was a decreasing trend in final …

The purpose of this descriptive study was to evaluate Montana’s 2006 HIV Prevention Social Marketing Campaign in two intervention communities: Flathead and Silver-Bow Counties and one comparison community: Lewis and Clark County. The intervention began in March 2006, and data was collected in the intervention communities for the first four months of the campaign and included four areas. First, HIV testing data was evaluated throughout the campaign to assess the number of individual’s receiving HIV counseling and testing in the intervention communities. Second, a survey quantitatively evaluated the campaign among individuals receiving an HIV test at the Flathead and Silver …
Giving All Children A Good Start To School: A Protocol In Defining Occupational Therapist's Role In School Readiness, Specifically In The Smart Program, Melissa Boll
Occupational Therapy Capstones
More children are entering school "not ready." Current research is showing that many "healthy" children are entering school not developmentally ready for formal learning. Based my own experiences working as a school occupational therapist for the past four years in rural area schools, this new trend is becoming more apparent. Teachers and other school professionals have increasing concerns over the numbers of children that seem "clumsy" or "awkward" compared to their peers. Children are expected to learn more than ever before upon entering school, the curriculum is no longer age-appropriate due to the pushing down of academics. Upon entrance to …

Primary Repair Of An Esophageal Rupture Using Pleural Flap, Saulat H. Fatimi, Sadaf Sheikh, Asif Anwar Ali
Section of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Esophageal perforation remains an important thoracic emergency. Aggressive operative therapy remains the mainstay for treatment. A case of esophageal perforation, consequent upon impacted food bolus, is presented. An 80 years old female, with multiple comorbidities, presented with dysphagia and right sided chest pain, who had a distal esophageal tear, secondary to accidental meat ball ingestion. Rigid esophagoscopy showed complete occlusion of the distal esophagus with a meat ball. Right thoracotomy was performed, which showed perforated esophagus with large meat ball protruding from it. Endoscopic removal of the food particles was done, and the rupture was repaired using a pleural flap. …

Daphnia hyalina, D. galeata, and D. ambigua were exposed to the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa in 30 cm temperature-stratified columns. Changes in egg ratio, lipid index, length, and growth were recorded over 3 day experiments. Spatial distributions were recorded during 6-hour constant light experiments and 3 day fluctuating light experiments. D. hyalina and D. galeata stayed in the upper half of the column in temperatures of 18--22°C when exposed to M. aeruginosa. D. ambigua remained between 10--19°C regardless of food type. For across all experiments, depth and temperature ranges were narrowest in treatments with M. aeruginosa. D. ambigua incurred costs to …

Mhc (B) Complex Recombinant Immune Response, Nicole Gay Wilkinson
Master's Theses and Capstones
Recombination between chicken major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I B-F and class IV B-G genes has enabled more precise identification of genes controlling immune responses. Congenic lines, each containing a unique MHC recombinant, were developed with 99.9% genetic uniformity to inbred Line UCD 003 (B17B17). A new recombinant, R13 (BF17-BG23), originated in the tenth backcross generation for R1 (BF24-BG23). Two experiments tested the R13 immune response to bovine red blood .cells (BRBC) and Rous sarcoma virus (RSV).
A single R13B17 sire mated to five R131317 dams produced progeny segregating for R13R13, R13B17, and B17B17 genotypes. These progeny were injected with …

Professor Martha C. Nussbaum is an accomplished scholar in an impressive variety of fields. Drawing on her diverse academic backgrounds, Nussbaum has written extensively about emotions and their importance for law from the perspective of her primary specialty, philosophy. Her book Hiding from Humanity criticizes the roles that two particular emotions, disgust and shame, play in the law. Its central thesis is that, as legal actors, we should be wary of disgust and shame because indulging in those emotions allows us to hide from our humanity - both our humanity in the general sense and also those specific features of …

Getting Away With Murder: Guatemala's Failure To Protect Women And Rodi Alvarado's Quest For Saftey, Angelica Chazaro, Jennifer Casey
UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice
A decade after the 1996 Peace Accords that marked the end of the 36-year internal armed conflict, Guatemala fails to provide basic protection of women's human rights. The plight of asylumseeker Rodi Alvarado and the spiked increase in the murders of Guatemalan women ("femicides") highlight the scope of Guatemala's lack of protection for women. After suffering ten years of brutal domestic violence, with the authorities ignoring her pleas for protection, Rodi fled Guatemala, seeking asylum in the United States. She is not alone in her suffering. Since 2001, over 1,500 women have been murdered in Guatemala, with the perpetrators enjoying …

Characterizing The Resident, Fermentative Microbial Consortium In The Hindgut Of The Temperate-Zone Herbivorous Fish, Hermosilla Azurea (Teleostei: Kyphosidae), Pat M. Fidopiastis, Daniel J. Bezdek, Michael H. Horn, Judith S. Kandel
Biological Sciences
The zebraperch, Hermosilla azurea Jenkins and Evermann, a warm-temperate marine fish species with a strictly macroalgal diet, has a relatively long digestive tract with an enlarged hindgut and an associated blind caecum (HC). In zebraperch sampled off Santa Catalina Island, California (33°19′42′′N; 118°18′37′′W) in years 1995 through 2001, direct cell counts, gut epithelium assessment of bacterial attachment, and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) analyses verified that the zebraperch HC possesses a dense and morphologically diverse, fermentative microbiota. Bacterial cell counts and morphological diversity were significantly higher in HC contents compared to anterior gut regions, suggesting that microbial populations were growing along …

A great deal of pharmaceutical research is nowadays carried out in developing countries such as Pakistan. Is it, however, beneficial for the country and the participants, often the poorly educated and illiterate? Pharmaceutical research in Pakistan can bring benefits to both patients and country. Promotion of good clinical practice and the development of national guidelines are advocated. Government and industry both have a role to play to maintain the right balance.

Sampling And Testing For Plant Pathogens, Aileen Reid
Sampling And Testing For Plant Pathogens, Aileen Reid
Bulletins 4000 -
There are many methods used in the laboratory to determine whether Phytophthora or other fungi are present in growing media, water supply and diseased plants. These include:
• filtering water for spores
• baiting for fungi in growing media and water samples
• examining diseased plant tissue microscopically
• direct culturing from roots and other plant parts to isolate the fungal pathogen in pure culture.
This bulletin outlines some of the procedures involved. Growers may be able to do some basic baiting of soil or water samples themselves to alert them of a problem but the procedures involved in isolating …
