Effects Of Cheatgrass Control On Wyoming Big Sagebrush In Southeastern Utah, Daniel Blaine Eddington Nov 2006

Effects Of Cheatgrass Control On Wyoming Big Sagebrush In Southeastern Utah, Daniel Blaine Eddington

Theses and Dissertations

Critical mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) winter ranges in southeastern Utah dominated by Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata var. wyomingensis [Beetle and A. Young] Welsh) have developed dense cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.) understories. These communities are currently characterized by predominately mature to decadent stands of sagebrush with few perennial grasses and forbs. Sagebrush seedlings and perennial grasses compete for limited resources with annual grasses and forbs. To determine the affects of cheatgrass control on sagebrush growth and reproductive characteristics, imazapic (PLATEAU®, AC 263,222) herbicide was sprayed at 438.5 ml/ha with water and methylated seed oil during active fall growth of cheatgrass …

Establishment Of Cecidochares Connexa (Diptera: Tephritidae) In Guam And Its Effect On The Growth Of Chromolaena Odorata (Asteraceae), Z. T. Cruz, R. Muniappan, G. V.P. Reddy Nov 2006

Establishment Of Cecidochares Connexa (Diptera: Tephritidae) In Guam And Its Effect On The Growth Of Chromolaena Odorata (Asteraceae), Z. T. Cruz, R. Muniappan, G. V.P. Reddy

Faculty Publications

The gall fly Cecidochares connexa (Macquart) (Diptera: Tephritidae) was imported from Indone ia into Guam in 1998. It was field-established at one location in north central Guam, and its spatial and temporal spread in Guam was monitored. The biology of the gall fly is presented. No relationship between the number of larvae in a gall and the dimensions of the gall (length and width) existed. Three pupae per gall was the most frequent density with a range of 1-7. The sex ratio of flies emerging from galls was 1:1 irrespective of number of larvae per gall. C. connexa-induced galls established …

The Role Of Boron In The Regulation Of Inflammation: Studies In Vivo And In Vitro, Kelly Ann Durick Nov 2006

The Role Of Boron In The Regulation Of Inflammation: Studies In Vivo And In Vitro, Kelly Ann Durick

Theses and Dissertations

I demonstrated here that the presence of physiological amounts of boron was able to prevent the onset of and ameliorate ongoing collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). I also show a mechanism for boron's anti-inflammatory properties, in that boron was able to down regulate a number of pro-inflammatory mediators, all of which are under transcriptional control of NF-κB. Boron-supplemented diets, 2.0 mg B/kg and 12 mg B/kg, rendered CIA susceptible mice significantly more resistant to the onset of clinical arthritis, compared to mice fed boron-deficient chow, or commercial rodent chow. Dietary boron supplementation was also shown to prevent the onset of experimental autoimmune …

Expanding Roles: Paraeducators Providing Health Care To Students In Elementary Schools, Sharon Nelson Nov 2006

Expanding Roles: Paraeducators Providing Health Care To Students In Elementary Schools, Sharon Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Approximately ten to thirty percent of school aged children have a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional condition that requires specialized health care and related services. Providing the needed health care is critical in maintaining students' participation and success in school. The enactment of PL 94-142, in 1975, mandated that public schools give children with disabilities the right to a "free and appropriate public education" in the least restrictive environment possible. School nurses are the logical choice to provide the necessary health care in schools. They have the knowledge, expertise, judgement and critical thinking skills inherent in nursing education and …

The review describes the current provision of early childhood services in Australia and examines relevant policy. It also provides an overview of the early childhood education research, in Australia and internationally, and uses this body of work to identify and illuminate the central issues.

Effect Of Soy Isoflavone Protein And Soy Lecithin On Endothelial Function In Healthy Postmenopausal Women, Mary Pearson Nov 2006

Effect Of Soy Isoflavone Protein And Soy Lecithin On Endothelial Function In Healthy Postmenopausal Women, Mary Pearson

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of soy isoflavone protein concentrate and soy lecithin on endothelial function measured as flow mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery in healthy postmenopausal women. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled crossover trial, twenty-five subjects (mean age 61 years; BMI 25.46 kg/m2) were recruited from the general population of southwestern Connecticut. Subjects underwent endothelial function testing using high frequency ultrasound at baseline and following 4 weeks of each randomly assigned treatment with intervening 4-week washout periods. Treatment assignment included: soy isoflavone protein (SP, 25gm/day) or soy lecithin (SL, 20gm/day) alone …

Mother Knows Best: Maternal Experience And Choice Of Infant Sleep Position, Meghan Lane Nov 2006

Mother Knows Best: Maternal Experience And Choice Of Infant Sleep Position, Meghan Lane

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to examine the associations between maternal child-rearing experience, choice of infant sleeping position, and the source, nature and trust of advice received about infant sleeping position in a high-risk, primarily African-American population. Background: The number of deaths attributed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) has decreased since the initiation of the Back to Sleep campaign in 1994. Although this change has benefited all ethnic groups, African-American infants are still twice as likely to succumb to SIDS as Caucasian infants. Design/Methods: We conducted 668 face-to-face standardized interviews with mothers of infants in Connecticut, Georgia …
