The Grazing Of Goats In The Pastoral Areas Of Western Australia : Best Management Practice Guidelines, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Land resources best practice series

The Land Administration Act 1997 (LAA) requires a pastoralist to manage and work the land within a pastoral lease to its best advantage and use methods of best pastoral and environmental management practices to achieve sustainable land use. For the purposes of the pastoral provisions in Part 7 of the LAA, a distinction is made between authorised and prohibited stock. Recent amendments of the classification of goats, from prohibited stock to authorised stock, require that a best practice management framework be developed to ensure future sustainability of the industry. This document recognises the existence of a de facto managed goat …

Ecophysiolgoical Responses Of Schizachyrium Scoparium To Water And Nitrogen Manipulations, Amy Kochsiek, Veronica Ciganda, Neal Bryan, Lena Hite, Tala Awada Apr 2006

Ecophysiolgoical Responses Of Schizachyrium Scoparium To Water And Nitrogen Manipulations, Amy Kochsiek, Veronica Ciganda, Neal Bryan, Lena Hite, Tala Awada

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Nitrogen is increasing in terrestrial ecosystems as a result of agricultural practices and the burning of fossil fuels. This increase is expected to be accompanied by changes in water availability due to global warming. We examined the effects of nitrogen and water manipulations on Schizachyrium scoparium, one of the dominant grasses in the Great Plains. Schizachyrium scoparium responded positively to watering, with an increase in photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, water and nitrogen use efficiencies, and water potential. Under watered conditions, fertilization had no significant effect on measured parameters, except for nitrogen-use efficiency. Significant differences appeared between fertilized and nonfertilized plants …

Women In History--Marian Wright Edelman: Crusader For Civil And Children's Rights, Shirley J. Mills

Journal of Women in Educational Leadership

Marian Wright Edelman was born June 6, 1939, at a time when prejudice and segregation were the norm. The Wright family lived in a small, southern town of Bennetsville, South Carolina, where Marian was the youngest of five children. Her father, the Reverend Arthur Jerome Wright, was a Baptist preacher, and her mother, Maggie Leola Bowen Wright, was an activist for the rights of women and African-Americans. Her father expected his children to do two things-work hard at getting an education and serve others through community service. Marian Wright was encouraged by her parents, teachers, and church leaders to live …

Demand Estimation For Agricultural Processing Coproducts, Cheryl Wachenheim, Patrick Novack, Eric Devuyst, David Lambert Apr 2006

Demand Estimation For Agricultural Processing Coproducts, Cheryl Wachenheim, Patrick Novack, Eric Devuyst, David Lambert

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Coproducts of processing agricultural commodities are often marketed for use as livestock feed through private transaction. The resulting lack of historical price information prohibits the use of positive time series techniques to estimate demand. Linear programming is used as a normative technique to estimate step function demand schedules for coproducts by individual livestock classes. Seemingly unrelated regression is used to smooth demand schedules by fitting demand data to generalized Leontief cost functions. Estimates are adjusted for data censoring using probit analysis. Aggregate quantity demanded of sugarbeet pulp, wheat middlings, and potato waste is relatively responsive to price changes (i.e., demand …

Bison And The Food Distribution Program On Indian Reservations, David Lulka Apr 2006

Bison And The Food Distribution Program On Indian Reservations, David Lulka

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

In recent years, bison products have been incorporated into the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR). This paper examines the factors leading up to this particular development and the structural problems that have yet to be resolved within the program. Altogether, the findings illustrate that cultural traditions, health problems, and economic concerns instigated the federal government to embark upon this new policy. Unfortunately, while the program has responded to tribal demands in certain respects, it has not resolved underlying structural inequalities between tribal and nontribal communities. In particular, the FDPIR does not acknowledge the problematic nature of production-consumption networks …

Methamphetamine Addiction, Treatment, And Outcomes: Implications For Child Welfare Workers, Cathleen Otero, Sharon Boles, Nancy Young, Kim Dennis Apr 2006

Methamphetamine Addiction, Treatment, And Outcomes: Implications For Child Welfare Workers, Cathleen Otero, Sharon Boles, Nancy Young, Kim Dennis

Center on Children, Families, and the Law (and Related Organizations): Publications

Methamphetamine is a highly addictive stimulant associated with serious health and psychiatric conditions, including heart damage and brain damage, impaired thinking and memory problems, aggression, violence, and psychotic behavior. Methamphetamine is also associated with the transmission of infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and hepatitis.

Child welfare workers are seeing growing numbers of children and families affected by the parent’s use of methamphetamine. In order to make sound decisions for the benefit of children and families, child welfare workers need accurate information about methamphetamine, its effects on parents and their children, and the effectiveness of treatment. This paper presents the most …

Relating The Cost Of Spinning Silk To The Tendency To Share It For Three Embiids With Different Lifestyles (Order Embiidina: Clothodidae, Notoligotomidae, And Australembiidae), Janice Edgerly-Rooks, Shailesh Shenoy, Vanessa Werner Apr 2006

Relating The Cost Of Spinning Silk To The Tendency To Share It For Three Embiids With Different Lifestyles (Order Embiidina: Clothodidae, Notoligotomidae, And Australembiidae), Janice Edgerly-Rooks, Shailesh Shenoy, Vanessa Werner

Biology

Although adult female embiids (Order Embiidina) superficially lack morphological diversity, their variety of habitats may impose distinct selective pressures on behavior, such as their use of silk and their tendency to aggregate. For example, where silk serves as a primary defense from environmental threats, coloniality might be adaptive. The cost of production or spinning might also prompt them to share silk. These ideas were tested in laboratory trials involving three species of embiids with different lifestyles: an arboreal species (Antipaluria urichi (Saussure) from a neotropical rain forest, a species (Notoligotoma hardyi (Frederichs) that dwells on surfaces of granite outcrops in …

Mapping The Literature Of Medical-Surgical Nursing, Mary K. Taylor Apr 2006

Mapping The Literature Of Medical-Surgical Nursing, Mary K. Taylor

Articles

Background: Medical-surgical or adult health nursing is a complex specialty that requires a wide-ranging literature to inform its research and practice. Several excellent qualitative aids exist for collection development for this field, but quantitative studies are few. While one bibliometric study of journals exists, no recent work had been done in this area.

Method: The Mapping the Literature of Nursing Project protocol was used. Four source journals were selected, and a citation analysis of articles from 1996 to 1998 was conducted.

Results: A list of the most frequently cited journals was created, using Bradford’s Law of Scattering. The list demonstrates …

Antagonisms, Mutualisms And Commensalisms Affect Outbreak Dynamics Of The Southern Pine Beetle, Richard W. Hofstetter, James T. Cronin, Kier D. Klepzig, John C. Moser, Matthew P. Ayres Apr 2006

Antagonisms, Mutualisms And Commensalisms Affect Outbreak Dynamics Of The Southern Pine Beetle, Richard W. Hofstetter, James T. Cronin, Kier D. Klepzig, John C. Moser, Matthew P. Ayres

Faculty Publications

Feedback from community interactions involving mutualisms are a rarely explored mechanism for generating complex population dynamics. We examined the effects of two linked mutualisms on the population dynamics of a beetle that exhibits outbreak dynamics. One mutualism involves an obligate association between the bark beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis and two mycangial fungi. The second mutualism involves Tarsonemus mites that are phoretic on D. frontalis ("commensal"), and a blue-staining fungus, Ophiostoma minus. The presence of O. minus reduces beetle larval survival ("antagonistic") by outcompeting beetle-mutualistic fungi within trees yet supports mite populations by acting as a nutritional mutualist. These linked interactions potentially …

Children And Immigration: International, Local, And Social Responsibilities, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol, Justin Luna Apr 2006

Children And Immigration: International, Local, And Social Responsibilities, Berta E. Hernández-Truyol, Justin Luna

UF Law Faculty Publications

This essay focuses on the human rights of immigrant children, regardless of the legality of their presence within U.S. borders, especially with respect to health, education, and welfare. In that context, the work explores, as the title suggests, the international, local, and social/cultural normative standards that structure the responsibilities—independently and collectively, that proverbial village—with respect to children's well-being. We develop these ideas in three parts. First, we address the foundations of the human rights idea and specifically enumerate the particular normative notions, including international treaties that govern children's lives. Next, we discuss immigration in the United States, with particular attention …

Ashtavarga is important ingredient of various classical Ayurvedic formulations like Chavyanprasha. Ashtavarga has been assigned various medicinal properties by ancient Materia Medica dealing with Ayurveda. Ashtavarga is subject of rigorous botanical research. Although work has been done on identification of medicinal plants mentioned under Ashtavarga, still a lot is to be done to identify the true representatives. Taking into consideration the medicinal properties of these medicinal plants, phytochemical and pharmacological investigations are the need of the hour to scientifically validate the claims. The article discusses the properties of the eight drugs mentioned under Ashtavarga.

Evaluation Of Natural-Source Vitamin E, Rrr-Α-Tocopheryl Acetate, As A Micronutrient In Sunshine Bass Feed, Jesse T. Trushenski, Christopher C. Kohler Apr 2006

Evaluation Of Natural-Source Vitamin E, Rrr-Α-Tocopheryl Acetate, As A Micronutrient In Sunshine Bass Feed, Jesse T. Trushenski, Christopher C. Kohler

Publications

A variety of vitamin E isomers can be used in the manufacture of animal feeds, though the efficacy of these sources varies. Our purpose was to evaluate natural-source vitamin E, RRR-a-tocopheryl acetate (NSVE), as an alternative to synthetic vitamin E, all-rac-a-tocopheryl acetate (SYNE), in the diets of sunshine bass (female white bass Morone chrysops X male striped bass M. saxatilis). Our specific objectives were to evaluate graded levels of NSVE in terms of meeting the vitamin E requirement of sunshine bass and to address the physiological and economic suitability of NSVE by direct comparison with SYNE. Five isocaloric, isonitrogenous, …

Challenges And Opportunities In Finfish Nutrition, Jesse Trushenski, Craig Kasper, Christopher Kohler Apr 2006

Challenges And Opportunities In Finfish Nutrition, Jesse Trushenski, Craig Kasper, Christopher Kohler

Publications

Much of the criticism leveled at aquaculture (e.g., dependency on animal-derived feedstuffs, nutrient-laden effluent discharges, and increased organic contamination in edible products) can be traced to the feeds in use. Accordingly, finfish nutritionists are being challenged to formulate feeds that not only meet the nutritional requirements of livestock but also minimize production costs, limit environmental impacts, and enhance product quality. These challenges not only add considerable complexity to finfish nutrition but also afford opportunities to avoid some of the mistakes made by other industries in the past. From a review of the current status of finfish nutrition with respect to …
