Influence Of Rapid Growth On Skeletal Adaptation To Exercise, Bonny Specker Apr 2006

Influence Of Rapid Growth On Skeletal Adaptation To Exercise, Bonny Specker

Ethel Austin Martin Program Publications

During rapid growth, increased body weight and muscle strength result in increased loads on bone. Bone adapts to these increased strains by increasing bone modeling and remodeling. As the growth rate decreases, bone that was formed as a result of these adaptations continues to mineralize and "catch up", and bone modeling and remodeling decreases. Bone benefits of exercise in childhood are reported in some studies, although we observed less BMC gain at trabecular-rich sites during the peri-pubertal period in children who jumped than those who did not. Data from 13 existing pediatric exercise studies were compiled to determine whether similar …

False Conflict: Who's In Charge Of National Public Health Catastrophes, Michael Greenberger Apr 2006

False Conflict: Who's In Charge Of National Public Health Catastrophes, Michael Greenberger

Faculty Scholarship

Hurricane Katrina renewed an old debate concerning which level of government should lead the response effort to catastrophic disasters. Traditionally, emergency response is handled at the most local level possible. The National Response Plan (NRP) adheres to this tenet, while providing for extensive coordination between the federal government and states and localities, if necessary. In doing so, the NRP provides procedures to ensure that federal assets may be brought to bear, without stomping on the nation's time honored commitment to the principles of federalism.

Flarr Pages #51: The Martyred Maternal Body In Pedro De Fuentes "Dona Francisca La Cautiva", Stacey L. Parker Aronson

FLARR Pages

In La Perfecta Casada ( 1.583) Fray Luis de Leon exhorted wives to redeem their fallen husbands through their exemplary behavior. While he does not directly address the problem of spousal abuse, he does suggest that even infidelity must be endured as part of the perfect wife's duty to exert her good, Christian influence on her husband.

Low Leaf N And P Resorption Contributes To Nutrient Limitation In Two Desert Shrubs, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, J. H. Richards Apr 2006

Low Leaf N And P Resorption Contributes To Nutrient Limitation In Two Desert Shrubs, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, J. H. Richards

Biology

Both water and nutrients are limiting in arid environments, and desert plants have adapted to these limitations through numerous developmental and physiological mechanisms. In the Mono Basin, California, USA, co-dominant Sarcobatus vermiculatus and Chrysothamnus nauseosus ssp. consimilis are differentially N and P limited. We hypothesized that low leaf N resorption contributes to N-limitation in Sarcobatus and that low leaf P resorption contributes to P-limitation in Chrysothamnus. As predicted, Sarcobatus resorbed proportionally 1.7-fold less N than Chrysothamnus, but reduced leaf P in senescent leaves to lower levels than Chrysothamnus (8.0–10.8-fold lower based on leaf area or mass, respectively), consistent with N, …

Field Peas In Diets Fed To Swine, Hans H. Stein Apr 2006

Field Peas In Diets Fed To Swine, Hans H. Stein

SDSU Extension Special Series

Field peas (Pisum sativum L.) have a nutrient profile intermediate between corn and soybean meal. The digestibility of most nutrients in field peas is similar to that in soybean meal, and the concentration of digestible energy in field peas is similar to that in corn.
Although the digestibility of most nutrients may be improved by thermal treatment, field peas are usually fed to swine without prior heat treatment. Pigs tolerate field peas well and the palatability of diets containing field peas is not different from diets containing only corn and soybean meal.
Recent research with U.S.-grown field peas indicates that …
