The Effects Of Music On Art Making With Older Adults, Gertrude W. Goodwin May 2006

The Effects Of Music On Art Making With Older Adults, Gertrude W. Goodwin

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

It is projected that by 2030, older adults will make up 69.4 million of the population in the United States (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 2001). The basic physical, mental, and emotional needs of these older adults must be addressed to ensure an adequate quality of life. Quality of life refers to the degree needs are being met as well as the person’s perception and satisfaction with life. As the population ages there is an increased expectation for a higher quality of life because older adults are healthier, more active, and living longer. The therapeutic use of art and music …

Time-Delay Neural Network Based Predictions Of Elephant Distribution In A South African Game Reserve, Parviz Palangpour, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Kevin Duffy May 2006

Time-Delay Neural Network Based Predictions Of Elephant Distribution In A South African Game Reserve, Parviz Palangpour, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Kevin Duffy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A large portion of South Africa's elephant population can be found on small wildlife reserves. When confined to enclosed reserves the elephant densities are much higher than observed in the wild. The large nutritional demands and destructive foraging behavior of elephants threaten rare species of vegetation. If conservation management is to protect threatened species of vegetation, knowing how long elephants will stay in one area of the reserve as well as which area they will move to next is essential. The goal of this study is to train an artificial neural network to predict an elephant herd's next position in …

Searching Response Of A Wandering Spider To Potential Cues Associated With Lepidopteran Eggs, Rosa Isela Ruiz May 2006

Searching Response Of A Wandering Spider To Potential Cues Associated With Lepidopteran Eggs, Rosa Isela Ruiz

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Cheiracanthium inclusum (Hentz), a wandering spider, has been frequently observed feeding on the eggs of Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), an important cotton pest. Wandering spiders are known to feed mainly on mobile prey, thus mechanisms used by these spiders to locate sessile prey remain understudied. Vibratory and visual are among the main cues used by spiders to identify prey. However, other sensory modalities such as chemoreception may be used but are poorly understood. This study investigated the types of cues utilized by C. inclusum to locate and identify H. zea eggs as prey. Results show that C. inclusum responds positively to …

The Constitutionality Of Utah's 2005 Tuition Tax Credit Proposals, Sean W. Mullaney Apr 2006

The Constitutionality Of Utah's 2005 Tuition Tax Credit Proposals, Sean W. Mullaney

ExpressO

The issue of tuition tax credits for private and religious elementary and secondary schools remains a hot button political and legal issue. While the Supreme Court’s decision in Zelman v. Simmons-Harris provided some new parameters on the validity of school choice programs, it certainly did not end both the political and legal debate. In Utah, school choice programs have yet to pass, and come up every winter in the State Legislature.

My Comment analyses the 2005 tuition tax credit proposals through two Constitutional frameworks: the Establishment Clause and the Equal Protection Clause. Traditionally, the Supreme Court has analyzed school choice …

Predicting Delinquency In Adolescence And Young Adulthood: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Risk And Protective Factors, Amy E. Green Apr 2006

Predicting Delinquency In Adolescence And Young Adulthood: A Longitudinal Analysis Of Risk And Protective Factors, Amy E. Green

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Longitudinal studies that track individuals from childhood into adulthood may be the best method to identify risk and protective factors for crime and delinquency. The primary goals of this study were to determine 1) the ability of risk factors identified by the end of elementary school to predict delinquency referrals, 2) the extent to which positive assets (promotive factors) add to the prediction of delinquency, and 3) potential interactions between these risk and promotive factors that moderate the relationship between risk and delinquency referrals. The final purpose was to identify gender and racial differences in these relationships. The current study …

Linking The Undergraduate Degree To The Graduate Degree: Core Curriculum Issues, Karen F. Steckol, Marc A. Fagelson, Dan C. Tullos Apr 2006

Linking The Undergraduate Degree To The Graduate Degree: Core Curriculum Issues, Karen F. Steckol, Marc A. Fagelson, Dan C. Tullos

ETSU Faculty Works

There are many issues that relate to the efficacy of the undergraduate degree in the field of communicative disorders. Some have advocated for the elimination of the degree while others vigorously fight to maintain it. Some believe that there should be clinic associated with the undergraduate degree while others argue to have the degree but without clinic. Some state departments of education allow persons with an undergraduate degree in communicative disorders to practice in the schools, others do not. Colleges and universities are afraid that without an undergraduate degree program, their departments will be seen as vulnerable to elimination in …

Community Health Sciences

Background: Knowledge is an important pre-requisite for implementing both primary as well as secondary preventive strategies for cardiovascular disease (CVD). There are no estimates of the level of knowledge of risk factor of heart disease in patients with CVD. We estimated the level of knowledge of modifiable risk factors and determined the factors associated with good level of knowledge among patients presenting with their first acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in a tertiary care hospital in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, a major tertiary care hospital in Karachi Pakistan. Patients …

What Makes Them Ignored? Consumers' Mindset Of Food Labels, Wai King Tse Apr 2006

What Makes Them Ignored? Consumers' Mindset Of Food Labels, Wai King Tse

Bachelor Degree - Marketing - Final Year Project

Executive summary

While Hong Kong consumers are increasingly concerned with food safety and a healthy diet, their usage of food labels during purchase remains significantly low. In order to prospect for effective moves in the future, one concordant step for both the government and pre-packaged food manufacturers is to understand the consumers’ perceptions and usage of food labels. This research explores what factors lead to such phenomenon and subsequently its implications in Hong Kong. The research also examines the behavioral variations of consumers in processing food labels.

The study begins with a literature review to construct research hypotheses, covering aspects …

Lysine Residues In N-Terminal And C-Terminal Regions Of Human Histone H2a Are Targets For Biotinylation By Biotinidase, Yap Ching Chew, Gabriela Camporeale, Nagarama Kothapalli, Gautam Sarath, Janos Zempleni Apr 2006

Lysine Residues In N-Terminal And C-Terminal Regions Of Human Histone H2a Are Targets For Biotinylation By Biotinidase, Yap Ching Chew, Gabriela Camporeale, Nagarama Kothapalli, Gautam Sarath, Janos Zempleni

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

In eukaryotic cell nuclei, DNA associates with the core histones H2A, H2B, H3 and H4 to form nucleosomal core particles. DNA binding to histones is regulated by posttranslational modifications of N-terminal tails (e.g., acetylation and methylation of histones). These modifications play important roles in the epigenetic control of chromatin structure. Recently, evidence that biotinidase and holocarboxylase synthetase (HCS) catalyze the covalent binding of biotin to histones has been provided. The primary aim of this study was to identify biotinylation sites in histone H2A and its variant H2AX. Secondary aims were to determine whether acetylation and methylation of histone H2A affect …
