The Influence Of Ultrasonic Setting On Fluoride Release From Glass Polyalkenoate Cements, N. Rushe, Mark R. Towler
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The effects of ultrasonic setting on fluoride release from glass polyalkenoate cements (GPC) were investigated. Cements based on two different aluminosilicate glasses that contained silica, alumina, phosphate, and strontia were used for the experiment. A series of GPCs were examined to show that increased release F- ion occurs, regardless of GPC composition. The results show that there is a greater release of fluoride from the ultrasonically set samples than those set chemically, regardless of the chemical composition. The snap set caused by the ultrasound is likely to be due to a combination of cavitation, improved mixing of the constituents, …

Calcium And Zinc Ion Release From Polyalkenoate Cements Formed From Zinc Oxide/Apatite Mixtures, Mark R. Towler, S. Kenny, D. Boyd, T. Pembroke, M. Buggy, A. Guida, R. G. Hill
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Calcium and zinc ion release from hydroxyapatite-zinc oxide-poly (acrylic acid) (HAZnO-PAA) composite cements into deionised water was investigated as a function of HA content, PAA concentration, PAA molecular weight and maturation time. At any given maturation time, zinc ion release was constant until the HA content was at the maximum loading (60 wt%) resulting in the cement matrix breaking up, allowing exacerbated ion release. The calcium ion release increased with increased HA content in the composite until the maximum loading where the release drops off. Up to this point, the release of both ionic species was proportional to square root …
Remoulding The Critical Junctures Approach, John Hogan
Remoulding The Critical Junctures Approach, John Hogan
Articles
This paper improves our understanding of critical junctures, a concept employed in historical institutionalism for exploring change. However, the concept lacks rigour, weakening our ability to define critical junctures. Of late, academics have utilized other mechanisms to identify change in historical institutionalism. Thus, it is within this context that the critical junctures approach is remoulded through the specification of standards, hence reducing uncertainty as to what constitutes a critical juncture. The remoulded approach is employed here in examining change in the Irish Congress of Trade Unions’ ~ICTU! influence over public policy in 1987.

The Sorry Sons Of The Godfather: Intertextuality, Orality And Diminished Masculinities In The Sopranos, Harry Brod
The Sorry Sons Of The Godfather: Intertextuality, Orality And Diminished Masculinities In The Sopranos, Harry Brod
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
When the enormously popular HBO TV series The Sopranos first premiered in 1999, it shared a core plot element with a film released about the same time, Analyze This, also successful and popular enough to later spawn a sequel, Analyze That. 1 They both revolve around the central image of a Mafia boss seeing a psychotherapist. This essay focuses on The Sopranos, and uses references to the contemporaneous Analyze This to bolster its case that a generational shift in images of masculinity is illustrated here. This essay draws exclusively on the first season of The Sopranos in order to isolate …

E-Portfolios - An Effective Tool?, Marilyn Drury
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
The effective use of electronic portfolios in educational institutions confirms their value as an important teaching and learning tool. An electronic portfolio is a digital archive or collection of artifacts (audio/video clips, text, graphics, and coursework) that represent the owner of the electronic portfolio, whether it is an individual, group, or institution. Personal reflection on one’s work or philosophies is a key element in many electronic portfolios. Some question whether electronic portfolios really benefit the educational process. This author overviews recent literature related to the use of electronic portfolios and discusses the issues and challenges of implementing and effectively using …

Rape As A Badge Of Slavery: The Legal History Of, And Remedies For, Prosecutorial Race-Of-Victim Charging Disparities, Jeffrey J. Pokorak
Nevada Law Journal
This article explores the continuing gendered racism in rape prosecutions: the undervaluation of all rape offenses against Black women and the concomitant overvaluation of rape crimes against White women, particularly when committed by a Black man. In this article I review the legal and extra-legal factors that have historically evidenced the gendered racism in rape prosecutions. I also explore the prosecutorial methods that contribute to maintaining these racial disparities. Finally, I propose remedial actions for prosecutors, legislatures, and courts.
For most of this nation's history, raping a Black woman was simply not a crime. First, laws prevented the prosecution of …

In today's debate on digital rights management systems, there is a considerable divide between the rights holders, their investors and representatives on the one hand and academics, consumer advocates, and civil libertarians on the other. These two groups often talk past each other, concocting their own doomsday scenarios while arguing for laws and policies that vindicate their positions. Unfortunately, neither side has sufficient empirical evidence to either support its position or disprove its rivals'. As the digital economy grows, the debate intensifies, and the divide between the two sides widens. Today, there has emerged an urgent need to find the …

Meridians: Feminism, Race, Transnationalism
One theme that threads through this volume of Merjdjans is how globalization, made possible by advances in science and technology, can also affirm antimodern practices which have particularly affected women of color. Dispersals, disturbances, and porous borders have reified nationalisms that, in liberatory moments, raise political consciousness, but then too often settle with the thud of circumscribing tradition upon the bodies of women. A number of essays reflect the effort to counter the trend through activism and reconceptualize the role of women through the arts, memory, and the questioning of alleged remedial institutional practices and scholarship....

North Korean Civil-Military Trends: Military-First Politics To A Point, Ken E. Gause Mr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Civil-military relations is one of the most challenging dimensions to deal with regarding North Korea. Since 1998, Pyongyang's foremost policy has been declared as "military-first." While experts debate the precise meaning and significance of this policy, considerable consensus exists that it gives the leading role to the Korean People's Army (KPA. Hence, military leaders in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea are very powerful and influential figures. Who are they? What kind of power and influence do these leaders wield, and how do they exert it? How do KPA leaders interact with dictator Kim Jong Il and their civilian counterparts? …
Inducible Yeast System For Viral Rna Recombination Reveals Requirement For An Rna Replication Signal On Both Parental Rnas, Hernan Garcia-Ruiz, Paul Ahlquist
Inducible Yeast System For Viral Rna Recombination Reveals Requirement For An Rna Replication Signal On Both Parental Rnas, Hernan Garcia-Ruiz, Paul Ahlquist
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
To facilitate RNA recombination studies, we tested whether Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which supports brome mosaic virus (BMV) replication, also supports BMV RNA recombination. Yeast strains expressing BMV RNA replication proteins 1a and 2apol were engineered to transiently coexpress two independently inducible, overlapping, nonreplicating derivatives of BMV genomic RNA3. B33' lacked the coat protein gene and negative-strand RNA promoter. B35' lacked the positive-strand RNA promoter and had the coat gene replaced by the selectable URA3 gene. After 12 to 72 h of induction, B33' and B35' transcription was repressed and Ura+ yeast cells were selected. All Ura+ cells …

Holographic Capture Of Femtosecond Pulse Propagation, Martin Centurion, Ye Pu, Demetri Psaltis
Martin Centurion Publications
We have implemented a holographic system to study the propagation of femtosecond laser pulses with high temporal (150 fs) and spatial resolutions (4 μm). The phase information in the holograms allows us to reconstruct both positive and negative index changes due to the Kerr nonlinearity (positive) and plasma formation (negative), and to reconstruct three-dimensional structure. Dramatic differences were observed in the interaction of focused femtosecond pulses with air, water, and carbon disulfide. The air becomes ionized in the focal region, while in water long plasma filaments appear before the light reaches a tight focus. In contrast, in carbon disulfide the …

Pre-Marital Examination As A Method Of Prevention From Blood Genetic Disorders. Community Views
Saudi Medical Journal
The Saudi Royal Cabinet issued the Saudi Royal Decree No. 3 dated 11-7-1424, establishing the pre-marital examination as a health preventive measure for all Saudis, and requesting the 2 prospective partners (male and female) to carry out a pre-marital examination and present a certificate of pre-marital examination before the wedding. However, the prospective husband and wife are not obliged to abide by the laboratory results if they so wish. This program started officially on the 1st of Muharram, 1425. As a consequence, the community perception and views on the pre-marital examination program as a preventive measure become crucial. Therefore, this …

Complex conductivity measurements (0.1-1000 Hz) were obtained from biostimulated sand-packed columns to investigate the effect of microbial growth and biofilm formation on the electrical properties of porous media. Microbial growth was verified by direct microbial counts, pH measurements, and environmental scanning electron microscope imaging. Peaks in imaginary (interfacial) conductivity in the biostimulated columns were coincident with peaks in the microbial cell concentrations extracted from sands. However, the real conductivity component showed no discernible relationship to microbial cell concentration. We suggest that the observed dynamic changes in the imaginary conductivity (σ″) arise from the growth and attachment of microbial cells and …

Bad Ass Or Punk Ass?: The Contours Of Street Masculinity, Christopher W. Mullins, Robin M. Cardwell-Mullins
UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
In this article, we examine the utility of R.W. Connell’s conceptualization of hegemonic and subordinate masculinities through the examination of qualitative interviews with active criminal offenders in Saint Louis, Missouri. The article describes contours of “bad ass” masculinity, the hegemonic form, and “punk” masculinity, the primary subordinate form. After an examination of the nature of these masculinities, we discuss how these elements of the cognitive map of the streets are refractions of mainstream masculinities, exploring the convergences and divergences that emerged in the data. Finally, we point out how the work on masculinities is important to gender studies and feminist …
