Optimal Adaptation In Web Processes With Coordination Constraints, Kunal Verma, Prashant Doshi, Karthik Gomadam, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth Sep 2006

Optimal Adaptation In Web Processes With Coordination Constraints, Kunal Verma, Prashant Doshi, Karthik Gomadam, John A. Miller, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

We present methods for optimally adapting Web processes to exogenous events while preserving inter-service constraints that necessitate coordination. For example, in a supply chain process, orders placed by a manufacturer may get delayed in arriving. In response to this event, the manufacturer has the choice of either waiting out the delay or changing the supplier. Additionally, there may be compatibility constraints between the different orders, thereby introducing the problem of coordination between them if the manufacturer chooses to change the suppliers. We focus on formulating the decision making models of the managers, who must adapt to external events while satisfying …

Flexible Querying Of Xml Documents, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Trivikram Immaneni Sep 2006

Flexible Querying Of Xml Documents, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan, Trivikram Immaneni

Kno.e.sis Publications

Text search engines are inadequate for indexing and searching XML documents because they ignore metadata and aggregation structure implicit in the XML documents. On the other hand, the query languages supported by specialized XML search engines are very complex. In this paper, we present a simple yet flexible query language, and develop its semantics to enable intuitively appealing extraction of relevant fragments of information while simultaneously falling back on retrieval through plain text search if necessary. We also present a simple yet robust relevance ranking for heterogeneous document-centric XML.

The Enfleshment Of Masculinity(S): The Maintenance Of Hegemonic Masculinity, Brett N. Billman Sep 2006

The Enfleshment Of Masculinity(S): The Maintenance Of Hegemonic Masculinity, Brett N. Billman

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

With the proliferation of the term “masculinities” over the past two decades men’s subjective experiences have come to light in an attempt to destabilize the patriarchy. However, in this time it seems that hegemonic masculinity has in fact been attempting, quite successfully, to maintain itself through the proliferation of multiple patriarchies. Examination of the enfleshment of masculinity through the physicality of the masculine body presents us with a more articulated version of hegemonic masculinity. This more articulate view begins to highlight the politics of difference present in a discussion of Brokeback Mountain and the wide spread deployment and growth of …

The Legal Framework For Currency Management In Nigeria., Anthony Olatujoye Sep 2006

The Legal Framework For Currency Management In Nigeria., Anthony Olatujoye

Bullion

This paper reviews the adequacy of the existing legal framework for Currency Management in Nigeria. The paper is structured into three parts. Part I is an introduction to the paper. The legal provisions governing currency management in Nigeria and some of the legal challenges for the CBN are highlighted and examined in part II. Part III concludes the paper: that a major legal challenge facing the CBN is the absence of specific provisions of the law criminalizing such acts as tampering, deliberate mutilation, spraying and marching of currency.

Promoting The Use Of Non-Cash Payment Alternatives In Nigeria., Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede

Bullion

The payments and settlement system represents the plat-form upon which financial resources is exchanged for goods and services. This paper discussed the different alternatives of non-cash payment methods as well as the advantages, modes of payments and challenges. The study concluded that, there is need not only to further the laudable reforms of the Federal Government of Nigeria, but also to ensure that business and non-business financial transactions are accessible and convenient for the average Nigerian. Lucas Moser’S St. Magdalene Altarpiece: Solving The Riddle Of The Sphinx, Amy Morris Sep 2006

Lucas Moser’S St. Magdalene Altarpiece: Solving The Riddle Of The Sphinx, Amy Morris

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

Lucas Moser’s St. Magdalene Altarpiece: Solving the Riddle of the Sphinx Once described as a “sphinx that beckons with a thousand riddles” this dissertation presents a new understanding of some of the controversial topics surrounding Lucas Moser’s St. Magdalene Altarpiece (1432), one of the most important paintings from the late Gothic period in Germany. While interest in this altarpiece has declined in recent decades because of a lack of historical documentation, this study proposes new interpretations for many of its puzzling features by critically examining earlier research in light of more recent findings. This study contributes to the literature on …

Expression Of The Primary Carbohydrate Component Of The Bordetella Bronchiseptica Biofilm Matrix Is Dependent On Growth Phase But Independent Of Bvg Regulation, Yasuhiko Irie, Andrew Preston, Ming H. Yuk Sep 2006

Expression Of The Primary Carbohydrate Component Of The Bordetella Bronchiseptica Biofilm Matrix Is Dependent On Growth Phase But Independent Of Bvg Regulation, Yasuhiko Irie, Andrew Preston, Ming H. Yuk

Biology Faculty Publications

We previously showed that the Bvg virulence control system regulates biofilm formation in Bordetella bronchiseptica (Y. Irie, S. Mattoo, and M. H. Yuk, J. Bacteriol. 186:5692-5698, 2004). Analyses of the extracellular components of B. bronchiseptica biofilm matrix revealed that the major sugar component in the matrix was xylose, and linkage analysis indicated a majority of it to be in a 4-linked polymeric form. The production of xylose was independent of Bvg regulation but instead was dependent on bacterial growth phase. In addition, N-acetyl-glucosamine in the matrix was found to be important for the initial development of the biofilm. These …

A Domain Decomposition Scheme Based On Equivalence Theorem, Mao Kun Li, Weng C. Chew, Li (Lijun) J. Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A domain decomposition scheme based on the equivalence theorem and the method of moments is introduced. The unknowns on every subscatterer are transferred to the unknowns on its surrounding equivalent surface. With this scheme, both the number of unknowns and the memory usage are reduced. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Secondary Metabolic Gene Cluster Silencing In Aspergillus Nidulans, J. W. Bok, D. Noordermeer, Shubha Kale Ireland, N. P. Keller Sep 2006

Secondary Metabolic Gene Cluster Silencing In Aspergillus Nidulans, J. W. Bok, D. Noordermeer, Shubha Kale Ireland, N. P. Keller

Faculty and Staff Publications

In contrast to most primary metabolism genes, the genes involved in secondary metabolism and certain nutrient utilization pathways are clustered in fungi. Recently a nuclear protein, LaeA, was found to be required for the transcription of several secondary metabolite gene clusters in Aspergillus nidulans. Here we show that LaeA regulation does not extend to nutrient utilization or the spoC1 sporulation clusters. One of the secondary metabolite clusters regulated by LaeA contains the positive regulatory (i.e. aflR) and biosynthetic genes required for biosynthesis of sterigmatocystin (ST), a carcinogenic toxin. Analysis of ST gene cluster expression indicates LaeA regulation of the cluster …
