Post-Thaw Amendment Of Cryopreserved Sperm For Use In Artificial Insemination Of A Viviparous Fish, The Green Swordtail Xiphophorus Helleri, Qiaoxiang Dong, Changjiang Huang, Terrence R. Tiersch

Faculty Publications

Sperm cryopreservation protocols have been developed for live-bearers such as the green swordtail Xiphophorus helleri and the platyfish Xiphophorus couchianus. Despite the high post-thaw motility (∼ 75%) obtained in both species, the requirements of sperm storage within the female reproductive tract coupled with the process of internal fertilization place functional demands upon cryopreserved sperm samples far beyond those of oviparous species. The purpose of this study was to facilitate the artificial insemination process with cryopreserved sperm of X. helleri through evaluation of parameters related to sperm quality after thawing. Specifically, this study evaluated the effects on motility for fresh and …

Still 'Ain't No Glory In Pain': How The Telecommunications Act Of 1996 And Other 1990s Deregulation Faciliated The Market Crash Of 2002, André Douglas Pond Cummings Sep 2006

Still 'Ain't No Glory In Pain': How The Telecommunications Act Of 1996 And Other 1990s Deregulation Faciliated The Market Crash Of 2002, André Douglas Pond Cummings

Law Faculty Scholarship

This article investigates the various flaws inherent in two short-sighted Congressional enactments, The Telecommunications Act of 1996 and the Commodities Futures Modernization Act of 2000 (CFMA). The article concludes that the Telecommunications Act and the CFMA, together with various 1990s deregulation legislation, led in large part to the collapse of the U.S. capital markets in 2002.

The article continues a comprehensive review undertaken in the recently published Ain't No Glory In Pain: How the 1994 Republican Revolution, the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 and Certain 1990s Deregulation Contributed to the Collapse of the Unites States' Capital Markets, 83 …

Two Glucose-Sensing Pathways Converge On Rgt1 To Regulate Expression Of Glucose Transporter Genes In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Jeong-Ho Kim, Mark Johnston Sep 2006

Two Glucose-Sensing Pathways Converge On Rgt1 To Regulate Expression Of Glucose Transporter Genes In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Jeong-Ho Kim, Mark Johnston

Faculty Publications

The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae deploys two different types of glucose sensors on its cell surface that operate in distinct glucose signaling pathways: the glucose transporter-like Snf3 and Rgt2 proteins and the Gpr1 receptor that is coupled to Gpa2, a G-protein α subunit. The ultimate target of the Snf3/Rgt2 pathway is Rgt1, a transcription factor that regulates expression of HXT genes encoding glucose transporters. We have found that the cAMP-dependent protein kinase A (PKA), which is activated by the Gpr1/Gpa2 glucose-sensing pathway and by a glucose-sensing pathway that works through Ras1 and Ras2, catalyzes phosphorylation of Rgt1 and regulates its function. …

Pensando En Cynthia Y Su Hermana: Educational Implications Of United States–Mexico Transnationalism For Children, Edmund T. Hamann, Victor Zuniga, Juan Sanchez Garcia

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

We use 3 brief educational biographies of students in Mexico who have previously attended public school in the United States to introduce this literature review on United States–Mexico transnational students. This article is also the first of several planned articles stemming from a currently ongoing, Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnologia-supported research study. As such, the purpose here is to highlight some of the dynamics faced by students who need to negotiate 2 educational systems (the United States and Mexico) and who fit neither a classic United States immigrant typology nor the typical premises around which schooling in Mexico is …

Novel Mesoscale Defect Structure On Nio(1 0 0) Surfaces By Atomic Force Microscopy, S. C. Petitto, Cindy L. Berrie, Marjorie Langell Sep 2006

Novel Mesoscale Defect Structure On Nio(1 0 0) Surfaces By Atomic Force Microscopy, S. C. Petitto, Cindy L. Berrie, Marjorie Langell

Marjorie A. Langell Publications

Cleaved NiO(1 0 0) surfaces were imaged with atomic force microscopy (AFM) to determine defect concentrations and morphology. Random (0 1 0) and (0 0 1) oriented steps, which have been previously characterized, were the most common defect observed on the cleaved surface and formed with step heights in multiples of 2.1 Å, the Ni–O nearest-neighbor distance, and terrace widths in the range of 25–100 nm. In addition, the surface showed novel mesoscale (~0.5–2 μm) square pyramidal defects with the pyramid base oriented along (1 0 0) symmetry related directions. Upon etching, the pyramidal defects converted to more stable cubic …

A Sub 1v Bandgap Reference Circuit, Ashish Digvadekar Sep 2006

A Sub 1v Bandgap Reference Circuit, Ashish Digvadekar

Theses

This thesis proposes a novel technique for a low supply voltage temperature-independent reference voltage. With the scaling of supply voltages, the threshold voltages don’t scale proportionally and thus low supply reference circuits have replaced the conventional bandgap reference circuit. The first chapter of this work discusses the conventional bandgap references (The Widlar and Brokaw references). The terminology used in the bandgap world is introduced here. The second chapter investigates the existing low supply voltage reference circuits with their advantages and the limitations. A table discussing all the investigated circuits is provided towards the end of the chapter as a summary. …

Legal Construct Validation: Expanding Empirical Legal Scholarship To Unobservable Concepts, David S. Goldman Sep 2006

Legal Construct Validation: Expanding Empirical Legal Scholarship To Unobservable Concepts, David S. Goldman

ExpressO

This article contends that many of the fundamental concepts of law (such as justice, incentives, and deterrence) are not directly measurable, and have, therefore, been largely ignored by empirical legal scholarship. Fortunately, other social sciences have confronted this same obstacle and have developed methods with which to empirically assess these intangible concepts. I propose that the concept of construct validation, which has been developed in the psychology subfield of psychometrics, can be adapted to law to measure these unobservable traits. To adapt construct validation to law, empirical legal scholars must 1) develop generalized theories, 2) infer multiple hypotheses from these …

Toward A New Economic Constitution: Judicial Disciplines On Trade Politics, Sungjoon Cho Sep 2006

Toward A New Economic Constitution: Judicial Disciplines On Trade Politics, Sungjoon Cho

ExpressO

This article first observes that protectionism is an icon of trade politics and thus likely to gather fresh momentum as a domestic election approaches. The paper then problematizes protectionism beyond mere seasonal election politics by revealing its fatal pathologies both to the United States and to the rest of the world. Protectionism basically caters to the special interest at the expense of the larger public interest, which may be coined as a Madisonian constitutional failure. It also deviates from global trading norms, which the United States hypocritically continues to preach adherence to for the rest of the world. This double …

Predatory Structured Finance, Christopher L. Peterson Sep 2006

Predatory Structured Finance, Christopher L. Peterson

ExpressO

Predatory lending is a real, pervasive, and destructive problem as demonstrated by record settlements, jury awards, media exposes, and a large body of empirical scholarship. Currently the national debate over predatory mortgage lending is shifting to the controversial question of who should bear liability for predatory lending practices. In today’s subprime mortgage market, originators and brokers quickly assign home loans through a complex and opaque series of transactions involving as many as a dozen different strategically organized companies. Loans are typically transferred into large pools, and then income from those loans is “structured” to appeal to different types of investors. …

Conversational Standing: A New Approach To An Old Privacy Problem, Christopher M. Drake Sep 2006

Conversational Standing: A New Approach To An Old Privacy Problem, Christopher M. Drake

ExpressO

American society has long considered certain conversations private amongst the participants in those conversations. In other words, when two or more people are conversing in a variety of settings and through a variety of media, there are times when all parties to the conversation can reasonably expect freedom from improper government intrusion, whether through direct participation or secret monitoring. This shared expectation of privacy has been slow to gain judicial recognition. Courts have indicated that the Fourth Amendment to the United States Constitution only protects certain elements of the conversation, such as where and how it takes place, but that …

The Use And Abuse Of Human Rights Discourse: A Legitimacy Test For Ngos, Igos And Governments, Eric Heinze Sep 2006

The Use And Abuse Of Human Rights Discourse: A Legitimacy Test For Ngos, Igos And Governments, Eric Heinze

ExpressO

Since the end of the Second World War, human rights have emerged as a standard for evaluating state conduct. As the stature of human rights has risen, however, the language and concepts of rights are increasingly misused. Claims are made by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), or governments, who seek legitimacy for policies that are in fact highly partisan and even abusive of the values of human rights.

What counts, then, as a legitimate use of human rights discourse? Aren’t human rights policies always ‘political’? Can any meaningful distinction be drawn between a ‘human rights position’ and a ‘partisan …
